I wonder if there's going to be a new version of Vocaloid that can sing English well soon?

(Edit: By "Vocaloid," let's pretend I'm talking about Hatsune Miku et. al. -- I didn't realize the software is used in other contexts).

LOL. Great marketing strategy by Toyota right here. Appeal to all the brainless fans of Vocaloid and surely they will easily put down $10,000 for a new car! Nice strategy.

Anime fans in Japan are complaining why they don't see this ad on Japan TV though. Did Toyota somehow make all the wrong decisions here?

I agree with the general consensus in here. (1) the screech was weird and unsettling and only occurred at the very, very end of that song anyways -- and even that was barely enough context to make it acceptable! (2) major uncanny valley in the very FEW shots that even showed her face (3) the American drawing of her was absolutely horrible (4) the male narrator seemed "off" (5) what a strangely esoteric target audience for a marketing campaign...

I did like how her signature pigtails flew out of the sunroof though: cute.

I haven't been this disturbed by a TV spot since I was four and they had those mangy hand puppets trying to mangle each other with their mouths over the chance to call a storytime 1-900 number first. That screech emerging from beneath those vacant eyes is ungodly nightmare fanfare if I've ever beheld it in the waking world.

I actually thought the narrator sounded indistinguishable from that of any other US car commercial. (Which made it that much funnier when the commercial derailed into Crazytown.) Of course, I hate car commercials, so take from that what you will.

All I heard was that Crypton I planning on creating a Hastune Miku Vocaloid software that will have Miku singing in English. This was on their Facebook page. I don't know what the release date is though.

That scream hurt my ears slightly instead of being nightmare fuel as some in-thread posts implied.

Still, this commercial is dumb marketing in the sense that most otaku aren't gonna have the big bucks to get this type of car. It's slightly cool to see (though I dunno much about the whole Vocaloid thing) but at the same time a rather poor choice.

It's modded. The text in the second panel is in a slightly different font and doesn't quite fit the speech bubble as well.

A Japaneese dub would be too good of an idea to pass off if it's in enough demand, so I think you might be right. But really this all looks like a test to see how well advertisement like this will work in the states.

^ If the US appearance is like the milestone event of the 2010 Miku 3D hologram concert, America (or at least LA) would have my envy. Creepy is not the word; exhilarating is more like it :) It would like seeing history in the making, and in a manner most fun :w00t:

So wait, AX 2010 had this and now they're bringing a....vocaloid? yeah, lolno

Hopefully they at least bring the admittedly impressive "hologram" technology instead of this this, but I wouldn't be too sure :chuckles:

Have you ever thought of going to AX 2010 to watch their concert?

That one was a disaster, truly. If the LA concert is like that, then it would just make the people outside Japan (particularly the Americans) saying "what the heck?!" and dismissed the phenomenon as another Japanese mystery.

I really hope this won't end in a disaster.
I'm so excited that their coming to the states, but because I'm on the other side of the country there's no way I can go. :(
If I went to the concert, I would want to see this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_gBSWE_KYE&feature=related.

Surprisingly, the ticket sales will be $15. I expected the price to be a lot more.

I assume that's on top of Anime Expo's admission cost, which is $60 or so.

They always get the best concerts -- I saw Shokotan and the SOS Brigade there a few years back. Probably because AX is the most commercial/industry-centric con in the US, not to mention the biggest at over 50,000 people.

Looking at the poster of Toyota Miku for US, it seems that they did remake Miku's image in what might be their perception of the "western look". For example eyes are smaller and we can see something more like muscles...

What does it mean for the image of Miku when she appears in the US concert?

Never was a realistic option, unfortunately. Made all the moreso "too bad" because I knew the mystery guest was going to be Kanno the moment one was announced (it was either her or Sakamoto, and I did not see Sakamoto coming all the way to perform just one song)... more than that, I really would've wanted to hear Megumi's version of Voices from Macross Plus as it's one of my favourite anime songs (and def. favourite from Plus). She has covered it bare handful of times live (and not once in a concert that's got BD/DVD release, I want my Tanasonic ;__; ) but everyone who has heard her perform it agree that it's amazing and she absolutely nails it. Hell, the low quality bootleg live recording I once heard was bloody fantastic and I'd say even better than any of Akino Arai's own versions. That no official or studio version of the song exists anywhere still bugs me. They should've had Ranka cover that in MF instead of the damn kyun kyun song... <____<

Their panels were apparently a lot of fun too. Meh. What gets me about this is that it's very unlikely that this will ever happen again (unless MF gets licensed in USA or something and that will never happen) so it was really a one of a kind chance.

Well, last month Kanno was with Ilaria Graziano in Czech which is probably more annoying because that was much closer than LA and thus more feasible...

uhh anyway back to topic:

Well, anyone who isn't complete weeaboo does that anyway.

I find vocaloids fascinating as a first step towards, uhh, I don't know, Sharon Apple or something (oh god now this sounds like a bad thing :cringe: ) but at this point I don't see how anyone who isn't heavy with otaku leanings could possibly enjoy any of this stuff.

Hell, it's too bad Miku is the most iconic vocaloid because she isn't even technically the best (Gumi sounds the most "real" easily and something like Luka is clearly more developed too).

as foreigner AX has always looked like only american con worth anything as they actually get great guests. Well, Otakon is not too bad but they've never pulled anything even remotely as impressive in terms of guests etc.
