Full Frontal translated the interview in the Studio khara 10th anniversay book. Second part is coming at a later date.

This first part cover:

- Why he didn't feel at home at Gainax and why khara was funded
- Why he decided to start a new company with Eva and not a new anime
- khara's early story and developments

To me the most interesting part was this:

H. Anno: Before creating this company, I was working on two anime projects, this one [Rebuild/NTE] and another one. However, to raise funding for the company, we decided to start with the new Evangelion movies.

Will the other anime ever see the light of the day?

Fascinating interview that confirms a lot of things I've suspected since the very beginning. Namely that the Rebuilds initially started off as a much simpler project (merely a digital remaster of the show simple) to raise capital that could have been outsourced to other companies but then due to a variety of reasons blossomed into a recreation that then became a much bigger and more original project.

As for will the other project see the light of day? Total mystery. Depends on if Anno still has an interest to tell what would now be a 13 to 15 year old project. It possibly could have also been absorbed into the second half of the Rebuilds.

.... Then again there is the 22 from his drawing for that Lantern Festival this year. It listed 20.21.22. 20 is clearly for Evangelion: Final coming out in June 2020. 21 is the Anno scripted & Shinji Higuchi directed live action Shin Ultraman film due in 2021. 22 is something as of yet unannounced due out in 2022

I’d like anything completely new from Anno, but a part of me would also squee over Nadia Rebuilds.

The third film’s distribution went to T Joy, and it’s Muneyuki Kii, an amusing guy, who had a promotion idea even wilder than ours.

I can only applaude this dude for trolling an entire fandom as hard as he did.

Bravo.

Thank you for sharing our work on the forum. We will make sure to update once the second part is published. It should be done in around a week, maybe a bit less.

Truly a genius.
I'm also glad Anno was happy with the result. It was totally an amazing marketing campaign.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."

We have just published the second part of the interview. Please enjoy it.

I guess the whole Evangelion extended universe had already been disclosed but the parts about how Anno sees Khara's future (many small ateliers rather than one big studio) and the whole processes behind Japan Animator Expo are interesting.

Feel free to discuss about it.

Wow, I was unaware of the AU Eva series. I'd like an Anima TV series!

Very enlightening, but alas, maybe not his current outlook on life since 2016 was three years ago. Either way, this is a tremendously interesting insight - he seems a lot more stable nowadays, especially compared to the often obtuse interviews he gave in the 90s.
Still, I'd love to have one of these Interviews of Anno every few years...

Anno:
"Once it’s over, I hope other creators will do other Eva. Obviously, because I want them to be appealing works, it won’t be without specific conditions, but I will not confine them to what my works have established. Just like Gundam, which keeps continuously supporting the animation world, Eva can become a new pillar."

I've figured this might be the future of Evangelion post Final for a while now. Khara completely owns the property and it's a good source of revenue. I'm glad to hear Anno doesn't want to see Khara become "The Eva Studio" so I'm hoping they'll start diversifying what they put out a lot post-Final. But they can always return to Eva at certain points if they need a guaranteed hit. But again, hopefully it's something done sparingly and not a constant thing. I figure the "specific conditions" would be stuff like contradicting the films or using the Eva cast unless otherwise approved by him. Either way, I don't think we'll see new movies in the future but would not be surprised if at some point Khara did an Evangelion series that Anno is not involved with. Sounds like the central story of Evangelion is ending in 2020 but the universe can continue on.

I also love that Anno says anime is going to go after children, MANIACS and mainstream audiences and that Eva is show designed for maniacs that just happened to find wide appeal. Should EvaGeeks become EvaManiacs?

I wouldn't be surprised if his outlook has shifted a bit since the start of production on Final to now where they're nearing the end but who knows.

Now I'm curious as for what word Anno used for "maniac" in the Japanese original.

He used マニア hence why we translated it with maniac.
What I found most striking in the whole interview is that he does talk like an executive, a business man, a lot in it. It's interesting to note knowing that back in the Gainax days, where the whole administrative and business side was a mess, he was just a Creator doing his stuff in his corner despite the whole mess.

Eijiro does in fact list "geek" as a possible translation for "mania".
