Does anyone know what was the initial spark for this film's production?
Did Anno push Toho into making this movie, or vice versa?

Vice versa. Anno actually initially turned down Toho on the opportunity to direct a Godzilla movie. Anno said in a statement that he was too depressed at the time to do much of anything. SSD posted a translation of Anno's statements here.

Did Eva-Q had that big of a backlash?

View Original PostXard wrote:"We'd like you to be director of the new Godzilla film" was the direct request from people of Toho that I got.
"It's impossible. I also have to work on Eva, I can't do this" is how I declined on the spot, being mentally unstable to boot.
However, I was moved by Toho's sincerity and enthusiasm of co-director Shinji Higuchi and thus I ended up accepting the job in March of the same year

Did Anno ever elaborate on that statement?

At this point "the backlash" is basically a western hater myth. In Japan Q was enormously successful at the box office, with the critics, and even won Anno some awards.

Anno's exhaustion is from the actual creating, not from the reaction to the creation.

I don't think it was any "backlash" that left Anno broken, but rather that he had to send himself into some dark places emotionally in order to produce Q which completely drained him by the end of the experience.

It appears as though western civilization is the only place where Eva haters tend to amass any meaningful presence. While I'm sure there are pockets pf people in Japan that despise Evangelion, the only place I've seen it gain actual ground is in Western societies. In this sense, Evangelion getting backlash is only true when Westerners make it true, but Anno himself getting any direct backlash from these westerners is very unlikely.

Another look at the Eva G figures:
http://neweva.blog103.fc2.com/blog-entry-4674.html

I'm torn on these. The sculpts and detailing are fantastic, but the armor design feels really half-assed to me.

And I guess this is a thing? Kind of looks like a painted gourd:

Edit! Ah! Apparently it's a Goya that they referenced for the skin texture. GoyaGoji.

If anyone has any skill translating from Japanese this Scified article mentions two early reviews of SHIN GODZILLA that say it is an "unprecedented masterpiece". Would love to see if that's an accurate translation.

From the sounds of that article, this movie is going to get the same reaction as 3.0. It's a Japanese film made for the Japanese audience, Japan will get it, but average westerner who isn't a japanophile will find it boring. Honestly.... This makes me even more excited because I know this is exactly the kind of movie I want to watch!

I'm not getting that vibe from the article at all, everyone who even pays half-attention to the news surrounding Japan's disasters recently should be able to understand the film. I don't see anywhere that makes it sound like it's a "Japanese-only" experience.

It says at the top, western "insiders" who "claim" to to have seen apparently didn't like it, but I have no idea if that's true, so who knows. But at the very end of the article the author states to check your expectations as its seems to be a story focused Japanese film, but most of them are, so I don't know, I think he's getting at don't expect Godzillia to fight another monster, and don't expect it to be all action.

Edit: never mind, I stand by my first statement, read the last paragraph called personal note

Probably the biggest hurdle Anno's Godzilla will have to fight in the West is the entitlement & ignorance people have regarding special effects. Because the Japanese film industry can't compete with the $200 million budget of a film like Gareth Edward's Godzilla 2014 that was able to create photorealist images of Godzilla at several million dollars a shot they didn't even try & went with a more classic looking effects style. Yes, one look at this Godzilla in action & the viewer isn't going "Oh my, is that really happening right now! It looks so real!" but the effects are still astounding!

I think a lot of people here in the West will shut themselves off to the whole New Godzilla movie simply because "The effects look so fake!"

Their loss.
