Played catch-up today! Gridman felt like old school robots beating each other up fun, though if there were any references to certain works, it went over my head.

Yamadeloid...Yamadera singing?! Very yes! It's definitely another favorite just because of the fun factor.

PP33 just reminded me of Cannon Fodder (from Memories) in term of the gloomy atmosphere. I liked its message of not screwing around with other living creatures.

My thoughts on the Eva one'll go in the appropriate thread.

The first season of Japan Anima (tor)'s Exhibition is over with #12 "evangelion:Another Impact (Confidential)" and will be back one month later.

The second season will start at the beginning of March, and release episodes on every Friday.
The lineup and schedule of the second season will be announced on the Niconico live broadcasting program "Japan Anima (tor)'s Exhibition as a trace" on Monday, March 9th. Please stay tuned!

Well shit, I guess they're stretching it out even more. We're into July now for the last short if they take no more breaks.

However, the next short will combine 3 staff members we've already seen shorts from:

http://animatorexpo.com/news/46

Director: Mahiro Maeda (Co-director of 20min Walk From Nishi-Ogikubo Station, 2 Bedrooms, Living Room, Dining Room, Kitchen, 2mos Deposit, No Pets Allowed)
Technical Director: Hibiki Yoshizaki (ME!ME!ME! Director)
Art Director: Tatsuya Kushida (Art Director of Until You Come To Me)

EDIT: We'll probably get another trailer on March 9th to pick apart out of boredom

EDIT2 : Link to March 9th livecast is already up:

I hope the expo still going doesn't push 3.0+1.0 further back.

Just watched Carnage a moment ago, and *man* what a short it was.

SPOILER: Show
Now, given the short duration of these exhibition ehhh, shorts (around five minutes each) it doesn't really give room for much of a story outside esoteric vignettes but Carnage curtails around that issue by making itself into a sort of pseudo-intro or first part of grim revenge story. The simple designs and characteristic (almost even crude in good way) animation only add to it's tour de force. It grabbed and didn't let go until the end.

Now, personally, outside of air combat i highly dislike violence and in fact generally wish it wasn't so prevalent in media/pop culture both because of personal preference and fear of the nocive effect both it and the "commodification/comercialization" of it could have on a society. But somehow, when watching Carnage i didn't mind the violence all that much (and man, was it violent) and i think a huge part of that is that it presented it in the "proper" context: The world of Carnage had an actual, honestly grim mise-en-scene whose bloody altercations show a sign of a deeply troubled or sick society, and nowhere more does that show than in our almost sociopathic main character.

Moving on to other things, while i'm not very familiar with western cinema ("Once upon a time in the West" and "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" are the only westerns i've seen) the love and homage for the genre is downright palpable in every frame and cut and the references to westerns ranging from the girl's design being clearly based on the Man with No Name to possible borrowing of cinematographic techniques made for yet another thing that made this short so impressive. I have mentioned the animation came off as crude, and to elaborate on that i meant that at times it seemed like they had a rather low proportion of drawings-to-movement, which combined with relatively simple motion arcs, vaguely dirty pencil lines and shape-definition of characters gave the animation a sort of crude feel. But far from reading as wrong -it certainly didn't feel wrong!- it very much complimented and added to the short's "character". And that's to say nothing of the art direction and the colouring, which are seriously unlike anything i've ever seen before. That oil painting styled coloring was probably the most impressive thing of the short, which is saying a lot.

The writing, while inherently sparse given the very short timeframe, was bold. I cannot say it was revolutionary or vanguard (not that writing needs to be), but it did its job of introducing the world and weaving the form and content together into an interesting package very well. I think pretty much the same could be said about the music (and the audio side of things in general) with the addition that they got a very correct balance with its "epic" or dramatic feel without going too far.

Two scenes i'd like to highlight in particular... First, the church/bible reading montage as the girl carries on her rampage (though that is arguably pretty much the entire short, lol) and the contrast with the One-eyed antagonist's situation compared with the rather tragic one of the girl. Both scenes really showcased the skill of the writer and director (specially like what the director does with the paintings and other mostly-still shots as well as the climax of the montage) and the latter scene in particular masterfully set the suspense for the hypothetical two other parts of the story, in fact if that had been a promotional intro for some anime you can be sure i'd be checking it out this instant.

And really, that's what a good intro is about. Show the staff behind it are both good and know what they are doing, give a general idea of what the work is about with an strong example, and assure the audience that they're in good hands... or hand in this case.

The lyrics in ME!ME!ME! have been posted at http://animatorexpo.com/mememe/, but the site isn’t translating them to English, nor is it allowing me to copy+paste them elsewhere.

Does anyone know what they translate into? Can anyone here translate them? I for one would greatly appreciate it.

View Page Source, then edit out the code crap:

ME!ME!ME! feat. daoko_pt.1
Lyric: daoko

ME!ME!ME! feat. daoko_pt.2
Lyric: daoko

ME!ME!ME! feat. daoko_pt.3
Lyric: daoko

I'm not very good at Japanese, especially when it comes to translating into English
So, this is not the best translation, but I try to get the gist.
She uses the word "master" but I went with "you" for readability.

Always
Always
The both of us being together
Always
Always
I'm thinking about you
You too, don't you
It's the same with you
Only our feelings [we think about]
this feeling
this feeling
I have the feeling that I could live
Master is calling
You are inside me
Sadness
Hatred
Beginning to create an Idol
Master has made a phantom
Truly, it's not this way
In the past it was to your convenience
Memories of Patchwork

Decadent Stoned Slacker Socialist

Thanks, TMBounty_Hunter and robersora!

I also used Babylon’s online translator for the first part, and it ended up very similar to what you translated:

When
When
There was it with two with you
When
When,
also known as your thing thought
You are so, too
You are the same, too
Just to have it of two feelings
After this
After this
Straight きれるきがしていたんだ (<-- the Hell is going on with the translator here?)
You called it I am me in you
Sorrow
Hatred
It is an idol to create
The illusion that you made
There isn't it whether it is true what
Of you who are past is convenient
The patchwork of the memory

Most of the site’s translation isn’t as readable as robersora’s translation (I do understand that Japanese is one of the trickier languages to translate accurately into English), but I like the site's explicitness of “the illusion that you made.”

Also the other two:

ME!ME!ME! feat. daoko_pt.2
Lyric: daoko

Is it a product of the hesitation?
Teach a hint to live well I am soft gently
Innumerable 現 to wrap in wafer immediately
Every day when it is cut a direct mark in two with a single stroke of a sword with a single stroke
Love it, and return it; and until now goddamn all
If I was able to delete it In consciousness falling into the deep bottom
I say and ask a partition and lend it
I sing a song in a diversion I am short-lived every day
There isn't you; there isn't it "The moment of the glitter”
Memory すは Of you
A smell In consciousness to remote distantly のは which had elaborate you alone
A dream on that day same at that time
Because looked; in this way
On that day in the same way as that time I yearn for you
Than you think
It is I crybaby all the time I wait here

ME!ME!ME! feat. daoko_pt.3
Lyric: daoko

You are now
Do what I live
You are now
Do what
Do you live?
Never you
I seem to live without the aspect changing
At the bottom of the dark marsh where the true intention is deep
I feel it to accoumulate and seem to overflow
A memory of that scene time I have put beautification on beautification
That good good child I look happy
That hateful child I did my best with me
What did you do with you?
When noticed; the mirror which is shattered
I wanted you to notice Does kana still have not yet come?
Though though I waited, I waited Though though I loved it,
I loved it The everlasting love
In May Day
The everlasting love
Surel
Anywhere
There isn't it anymore

Well, you do know that calling it a "translator" at all is pretty generous, right? :p But what you got there were the corn kernels in its shit. What it fails to digest into another form passes out the other end "intact".

Isn't this the same figure that will be in the crowdfunded short Moyoco is involved with?

Yes.

It's probably safe to assume this is because whatever deal they made with Sunrise to be able to use the footage was time-limited.

March 6th = PV2
March 9th = Live event with lineup being announced
Though there is no date for the next short yet, presumable it will be Fridays again so yeah, likely the 13th.
