Can't some companies deny fair use depending on the copyright their work is registered under? It's also relevant how Demo got access to the video to put in his commentary.

It could simply be that the video in question is only about 7 minutes long, including the intro but not including the loop factor. Anything more than just exactly one or two shots might in it of itself be distributing too high a percentage of the copyrighted footage.

If all of the clips from a film the Nostalgia Critic uses for a review add up to about 5 minutes, that’s less than a 10th of most movies. If the amount of clips Mr. Vaginal Excretions uses from ME!ME!ME! add up to about three minutes, that’s almost half of the entire work. That’s too much. There’s a reason why most short films used for reviews and riffs are only taken from expired copyrighted materials, and it’s so that the filmmakers don’t feel like almost half of their work is being freely handed out to un-paying consumers. Especially of one were to profit from AdSense by freely distributing almost half of the copyrighted material. (Which he does.)

But the there's no intention for the Anima(tor) Project to generate profit as of yet. No announced Blu-Rays, only streaming. So I don't get, what they are trying to protect.

As Bagherra said, Short 4 was cool, but I guess this was the false outlet to show it.
Staff List of Short 5 looks promising. I'm already wet.

That’s no excuse for someone else to profit from the filmmaker’s hard work.

Though I’ll be the first to admit that “Fair Use” is already a gray area with no clearly defined boundaries. At least, none that I, the casual knower of laws, can see. Especially when it comes to laws in foreign countries. So I’m not sure where the line is to be exactly drawn when it comes to cases like this. I’m just providing a possible perspective that Studio Khara or Dwango may have. It could also be that Khara may not care so much, but their contract with Dwango explicitly states that they are to be sole distributors of Khara’s Anima(tor) Expo material. If Mr. Chocolaty Pussy Discharge isn’t working on behalf of Dwango, then he’s technically violating Dwango’s contractual right to be known as the current sole distributor of Khara’s Anima(tor) Expo works, and whatever that may entail.

Good point, but I think videos like Demo's are like advertising; then again, I'm reminded of the issues people had with fansubs, so never mind.

Youtube is notoriously bad when it comes video takedowns, I've seen a dumb fan channel manage to claim copyright notices for their trailer reupload and I've seen Japan kill their own trailer with copyright.

Copyright is a strange beast, I'll give it that. I try to avoid playing around with it when possible.

Anno's Gundam interview summary is up in english

http://animatorexpo.com/news/22

“I believe that the history of anime is important,” said director Anno. “We must understand the past in order to explore the future. That’s why we made this collection of key animation films. It’s filled with the history of both animation and people. It’s not a good idea to focus solely on the future and pay no heed to the past. There are good things from both long ago and today.”

Director Anno also discussed how ME! ME! ME!, the work from the episode 3 of Japan Anima (tor)’s Exhibition, is currently viewed more frequently in the United States than in Japan.
“There’s no doubt that anime is loved throughout the world,” said director Anno. “That’s why we are doing the current project for love of the anime instead of business.

Watched it. Initial impression is pretty meh-- didn't seem to be anything special upon first watch. The longer I think about it, though, the more I can find in it.
SPOILER: Show
The fact that the entire thing was a dream gives me a little bit to work with in the way of thinking about the personalities of the characters, at least.

On the whole, I think this one has the least appeal to me out of all the shorts thus far.

If that's the issue then get a plugin for your browser that'll allow you to download various media from sites. I have FlashGot for Firefox. The browser will download the video at your connection's speed and you can enjoy it from your HDD.

I thought it was profound. Nothing that hasn't been done before, e.g. by Kafka's The Metamorphosis, but made especially poignant given the medium (anime) which more so than others pushes beauty-as-sympathy.

I really appreciated the shots where the girl was running to try to get her phone and the backgrounds were animated to be moving away. There's something about that way of animating a dynamic scene that I really appreciate. The jerkiness of the animation was off-putting at times, but certainly nothing that would ruin the short for me. I'd have been interested to see a smoother cut of it, though.
