There's this interesting tidbit in recent ('twas published last year) book on anime history published here in Finland (or then it was that sailor moon character designer interview from anime magazine two months ago...). I should look into it a bit more but basically Anno animated some challenging Sailor Moon scenes (for example Outer Senshi transformation scenes) for "free" (and presumably uncredited) in early 90s taking as a pay drawings of sailor senshi by the character designer

He was never the designer but it's known that Anno likes his animation and he worked on Eva. Hasegawa's sakugawiki page notes that Anno pointed out the Mars's fingers during the Fire Soul sequence are thick - or that they are shameless(?) [指が太い]. I can't make sense of it either way but next paragraph implies that it makes his animation erotic. It also says his FX-animation has Anno's approval. (Hasegawa also draws a really pretty Rei. Why can't he work NME?)

Sailor Moon is also discussed more in that Tsurumaki interview gwern found. Apparently Sadamoto didn't "get it" when he and Anno were becoming fans. Sadamoto only saw the pretty girls and didn't appreciate the show fully which angered Tsurumaki.

Actually I think even the less accomplished art by Kenji Tsuruta in the link above still looks less amateurish than the Anno one in the links above. The reference to Kenji Tsuruta is quite clear: Both carry "China-san" in the titles and the Anno doujin even has a subtitle "The Spirt of Wonder" which is a famous manga work by Kenji Tsuruta.

There are hysterical fun on two levels - while the other Sailor Moon girls are talking about overseas travel, sun-tanned men on the beach, cheap omiyage, showing off gift of perfume from a well-off relative, Ami-chan is having this really really long-winded "evil plan" of using the prestige built up by the Sailor Moon girls to grab power, taking over Japan and then the world with Usagi as the puppet "queen" in a totalitaran world state with her in real control etc etc... The final joke is as Ami lost in her power fantasy, she stepped on dog shit

On a superficial level, perhaps Haruka Tenou/Sailor Uranus (Seiyuu: Megumi Ogata=Shinji) or Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon (Seiyuu: Kotono Mitsuishi=Misato).

You aren't only one who has been inactive lately and hence the tragedy: I did check up the name but the book I learned it from has already been returned to library (it was over month late already ^^') and I don't remember the name anymore


IIRC the guy was also recently interviewed (maybe last winter or so) in finnish anime magazine along with his animator-wife and apparently the shortness of skirts was something he was hellbent on having but producers were anxious - but since the show became popular he thinks he made the right choice

Oh well. But it should be either Kazuko Tadano, the first character designer, or Hisashi Kagawa who took over the duty for S and on. Tadano is likely since the skirts were short from the beginning but on the other hand Tadano is a woman so she doesn't have a wife. Her husband is an animator though.

There could be a connection between Anno and Tadano since he was an animator on the masterpiece of insanity called Crystal Triangle and she was the character designer and animation director.

It's odd how many famous anime directors and manga authors have worked in hentai, often to make ends meet (because at the end of the day, the sad fact is that if there's one thing that's bound to sell, it's hentai). Even the creator of Sailor Moon, Naoko whatever-her-name-was, actually did topless drawings of Sailor Moon and some of the other girls (although ironically this was more a hobby than to keep her finances afloat). Hayao Miyazaki is one of the few exceptions to the rule, and he's very sad that so many doujin mangaka have to resort to porn to get noticed.

I know that Anno did some animation in Cream Lemon (which sounds more like a delicious iced desert), but he was just one of many animators rather than the guy in charge.
