Maybe that's not the most appropiate title for the topic, but basically, I would like people to describe what their fandom is like. I'm relatively new into Evangelion but I consider myself to be pretty hardcore and obsessed. I intend to watch the series in its entirety repeatedly. I also love Rebuild. Evangelion came at a time in my life where I needed it, I think and I really emphatize with all of the characters in different ways. I really love all of them. Enough to the point that I like to see stuff like Girlfriend of Steel or Angelic Days, even though they don't hold a candle to NGE just to see the characters living happier lives. Heck, I don't even like them. Maybe only Puchi Eva and only a few episodes and it's really a guilty pleasure at best. When I find them, I'd love to buy some Evangelion toys and action figures. Right now I'm in the process of finding the series on DVD for a good price to buy it and when the day comes, I will buy new editions of Death and Rebirth, and EoE. I also plan on buying 2.22 once it comes out on R1 DVD and I really have the dream of watching Q in Japan when it comes out.

I've been at this for a while (almost eight years), so I'd say any "obsession" has cooled a bit (alright, quit that damned laughter, I meant overall). And yeah, it helped me out through more than a few rough patches. Still the only fictional thing that ever compelled me to join a fandom (and I've thought a few through).

Now...while I'm a fiend for fanfiction (well, selected portions), I'm not really big on the "side-projects" (GoS1-2 and any of the spinoff manga, for examples). I don't mind Rebuild (mainly because I tend to give people a lot of rope when it comes to "could be great/could really suck"), but it'll never replace the original. And as I showed in the EVA collection thread, I don't own much in the way of merchandise/collectibles.

Suffice to say, I've figured out through trial-and-error what I want out of Evangelion and where to get it. Simple as that.

I'm pretty hard-core (and yes, obsessed) although my fandom has cooled somewhat over the years. (Hard to articulate--as well as believe it or not--but it has.)

I enjoy most of the spinoff manga and games (SIRP manga could be better), am excited about where the new films are going and adore NGE. So yeah. :sweatdrop:

Whiny hardliner. Find me something related to Eva that isn't NGE or EoE and I can probably find a way to hate all over it, and I'm not too sure I can't find a way to hate all over NGE and EoE as well. I also have a bit of a soft spot for certain breeds of fanfiction (Asuka-related and somewhat WAFFy; thoroughly unexpected crossover (I'm thinking specifically of the BSG one that never went anywhere, Thousand Shinji, and that one where it was Berserk with Asuka as Guts and Shinji as Casca...still waiting on a good TTGL crossover into the Evaverse, or an Eva crossover into the TTGLverse for that matter); and genderswap, although that's more of a fanart thing).
Nothing is so valuable that it need not be started afresh, nothing is so rich that it need not be enriched constantly.

Compared with many, I'm a casual. Having seen the series (probably twice over in all, including EoE, winter 03-04) and have it get under my skin, I got into the fandom to find out what the hell was really going behind the scenes. I have the DVDs and the manga, and that's it for merch.

Hmmmm, I don't think the word "fan" really defines how I feel about Eva or most works of fiction I have a great appreciation of... in fact that the best way of I can describe it; appreciation. I appreciate what it brings to the table, I can watch over again (well at lest once every few years that it) and still truthfully enjoy it (and even notice new things), I enjoy discussing it, I love the art behind it but in all reality I only spend a small amount of my energy (or pocket book) on it and in fact even joining this forum isn't something I'd normally do and if wasn't do to this "double dip" (riggght, that's what they're callin' depressions these days) leaving me ummmmm "employment deficient" and with a lot of free time and a need to keep myself sane I'd probably not of joined this forum (now don't get me wrong I have nothing against fan forums and the like, far form it, it's just not something I'd normal do; just a personal thing I guess).

Soooo um yeah, if I did have to label me as a type of fan then I guess I would be a very casual+

I am an old school tv EVA aficionado:

- Watched the episodes as they were first subbed
- Saw the first analyses and recurring themes debates
- Accept the original ending without much fuss
- Avoid Director's Cut new scenes like the plague
- It's about the cyber-mystical take on serialized sentais*, EoE's plot advancements are unnecessary
- Rebuild misses the mark: different episodes can't be fused in one that lightly without annoying side effects

So, yeah: a taliban.

*Giant robots anime went through ages but were never "B-movie" stupid. The 70s standard were fugitive, lonely survivors of defeated planets fighting on behalf of our peace. In the US they would have just been soldiers punching bad guys. EVA for me reaches its apex when they say "it's an angel": reversal of moral roles, mystery and uncertainty.

Psychedelica. End of Eva is one of the crown jewels of psychadelica. I love lal of Eva for plenty of reaosns, but I think the most resonant reason for me is that EoE ios possibly the best midn trip ever placed onto film. The imagery, music, style, motion and writign are all so unworldly and evocative that it blows everything away. Space titty apocalpse is something that could only be done in animation, and only when directed by Anno. It changed my mind on what constitutes a film, because it manages to agressively reject classicfication and convention, but remains highly intriguing and entertaining even at it's most solipsistic and bizarre. It's the perfect piece of art-as-entertainment. The movie at least. The show is a whole mess of other things, but I love EoE more than the show. I think EoE is best viewed under whatever intoxication is convenient with no context.

Then again I'm a crazy druggy weirdo, but that's my view. It never compromises but never becomes plodding and boring. It's perfectly executed. To me. Maybe to no one else, I doubt anyone really gets End of Eva like I do as there'a a lot of personal shit and I spent a long time fucked up on drugs and alternative religion watching it every week and it's burned into me even now that I'm substantially "cleaner".

Space titty apocalypse will never leave me and nothing can ever duplicate it for wonderful weirdness. Somehow it manages to make sens ein it's own context.

DISSATISFIED fan.
because the Gainax crew didn't realize that Asuka's incredibly dynamic personality is bound to rein in $$$ if used properly.

I'd say casual. However, I may get a bit rapid if you say something really nasty about NGE.....

I'm going with casual on this one. While I have seen the series a few times and insist it's one of the best anime of all time, I also am able to discuss numerous other anime too, and while I write Evangelion fan-fiction, I write numerous other fics for different fandoms as well. And, while I love anime and usually will bring up Evangelion in a discussion with another anime fan as we discuss some of our favorite stories, I would never say I put it on a pedestal...I just shine a spotlight on it.

Typically casual, limited to watching EvaTV, a collection of images, downloaded info and the translated script, on the hard drive, and rarely go on fanwank mode.

I've been a fan since the late 90's but only in the last few years started to actually 'participate' in the fandom in any sense. Mostly I just hang around here being a fanwanker/troll/heretic and occasionally perusing a fanfic or two. I'm not into the merchandising/collecting side of the fandom even the tiniest bit though.

Well ,I was never the sort of otaku that buys lots of anime stuffs, and neither the one that goes oftenly to events,or watches anime/manga every day...In fact I started to appreciate anime as an otaku since few years ago(in my "crisis age").

I can tell that my anime arc is composed at this order:Hunter x Hunter(TV Channel)Samurai Deeper Kyo,Soul Hunter,Nadesico,Evangelion,Code Geass,Death Note,Angel Sanctuary,Bleach.Childhood's anime doesn't count because I didn't recognize them as Anime in tha age.

And I think that my crises began with Martian Sucessor Nadesico and ended in Evangelion...Nowadays I think both are my prefferings,Evangelion when I'm dark and Nadesico when I'm happier =3

Oh and yes...Evangelion is the only Anime I recommend to some friends who aren't sympathized with anime stuff.

Needs to get a hold of Naddesico. My collection is all three Tenchis, Trigun, Love Hina, Maburaho, Evangelion, DNA squared, Eden's Bowy, Hanaukyo Maid Team, Please Teacher, CHOBITs, Louie the Rune Soldier, Tenchi GXP, Midori Days, Happy Lesson, all of Slayers (Save for the newest seasons) and Sailor Moon. I think it would be fun to collect a few figurines, but not to where I would pour the majority of my income into. I don't watch anime as often as I used to. Although I have to say Evangelion is at the top my list.

Oh yeah,I've forgotten Slayers, but I just watched sometimes and another, the same as Hunter x Hunter.

But for me Samurai Deeper Kyo,Nadesico,Evangelion,Death Note,Bleach and Angel Sanctuary were the ones that really has marked me.

In Nadesico you find a criticism on society lifestyle and values too,but it's softer than Evangelion,it's more colored and the humor is funnier. And it brings a mocked apology to otaku movement as the way it portraits the main character.

I'm a Rebuild fan, I think. I appreciate the series and the movies, but I don't worship them. I also am really enjoying Rebuild and consider it superior to the old EVA. I found Rebuild more enjoyable because it doesn't drown you in the character issues and give you time to breath. Rebuild FTW!!
NGE was a damned good anime
EoE was an anime masterpiece
And Rebuild is nothing short of epic
Long live the EVAs!!

I dont really participate that much in the Eva-analysis that happens here, but I will say that I think about NGE (mostly things that remind me of its themes/characters) practically every day. In terms of actual fan-stuff, I'm sorry to say that I haven't bought any Eva-merchandise (my EoTV/EoE are fansubs), and in terms of fan-work, I have only drawn one picture. I like Rebuild and played GOS1 (for the story, mostly) but don't care for the other stuff, which seems to be mostly garbage.
