FFVII Advent Children & Japanese Cinema

OK I could go into how pleased I am with the film but I won't.

What I will do is say that while watching it I came across a lot of little things that reminded me of scenes from Evangelion. I can't go into what they were in detail as, needless to say, the spoiler tags are up for Advent Children.

What I will say is for example the "Tadaima, Okaeri nasai" exchange made an appearance. There was also a bit about soul searching and "not running away". Anyone who played the game will also remember the concept of an ancient dormant doom being awoken by science.

I'm wondering is the impression of similarity I'm getting simple cliches or common themes that are found across Japanese cinema? I haven't watched very much anime so if I do can I expect to see these "similarities" more often?

Also, this thread is of course the local place to go w00t at FFVII.

I've annihilated FFVII, beat every weapon, collected ever materia, etc etc. Saw Advent Children 4 times since it leaked out, and I cannot say that I was once reminded of Eva. Thinking back, I cannot make any profound comparisons. To say that Cloud is similar to Shinji for not running away is like saying that Chihiro from Spirited Away is no different, as she rises to the occasion through hard work rather than running away and crying. I would argue that any parallels you drew were from conventions in film making. If anything, I think that Advent Children has a lot of similarities with The Matrix, DBZ, or Naruto. The final battle just blatantly screams Neo versus Smith from the end of Matrix Revolutions.

The only FF game that I owned was FFVIII. If they can make a movie about that then I'll watch. Until then I'll passed.

That seems to be the case. Perhaps it was just because it was in Japanese, or made in Japan that I got a little deja-vu. I should watch more anime I guess.

I'm curious though as to whether there are a lot of conventions in Japanese cinema that I could look out for in future? Is the "Tadaima, Okaeri nasai" exchange a common practice? Are there any other traits that mark out Japanese cinema? Do the Japanese actually like hollywood movies?

Well I've really liked almost every final fantasy I've played, but I will forever hold that FF8 was an abomination unto the face of the earth and should be stricken from the record of existance.

I agree.

Well, okay. It wasn't -that- bad, but it was pretty annoying. I didn't even finish it.

Hey I liked FF8.

I don't know, maybe it was junctioning 100 Hastes to my SPD and 100 Auras to my STR, casting Haste (For great justice.) on Squall, purposely lowering his HP into the red zone, then using Renzokuken every turn. I almost thought I was playing Kingdom Hearts. Use Invincible Moon at this point for extra spiciness.

On high HP enemies, you can nearly match this damage output with a single spell called Poison. It did *10k* per tick on Elnoyle.

Oh, and 100 Full Lifes on HP = Near maxed HP.

Magic is not there to be used. It is there to SUPERBUFFYOURSTATSTOTHEMOON.

Use your GF abilities instead of magic. Recovery is an ability a Alexander learns that heals 9999 or does 9999 damage to undead *Cough*Khadaj*cough*. You can use it freely every turn.

You *cannot* die in FF8 *never*. If you are low on HP, use Recover, if you cannot Recover, use a potion, if you can't use a potion, use cure, if you cannot cure, convert some, no items to convert, Diabolos' No Encounter.

All the Limit Breaks come when you're low anyways, so whatever you're fighting shouldn't live long.

Oh, and Shiva's Doom + T-Rexsaurs = free early exp.

You can either choose to change yourself or change your surroundings. All decisions are variations of those two.

Yeah, I myself am not a huge video game guy... but Final Fantasy kicks all ass! I am almost more excited for FFXII than I am Live Action Eva... (second thought: no, fuck that, I would cut off my left hand for this movie).
You have to look at Final Fantasy as a series of amazingly complex and origional stories - rivaling that of Eva as well... just imagion if the games were films or series, that's where the substance comes from - so you see, Final Fantasy is in no way the "mindless video game geek scene."

Well, the argument could be made that FFs are so easy that all fights degenerate into button mashing. For example, in FF7 you get slash all and 4c slash and then just mash the select button for physical attack. Or in Xenogears (another Square game), you mash the same two buttons for deathblow in every fight.

I've enjoyed 7-10. Yes, I even liked 8, though I can understand why people dislike it.
