Are we talking in terms of character design, entertainment value, intrigue, what? It matters; for example, a lot of characters that are thoroughly unlikable are still very well-made.

Also, is there a decade restriction, or can these be from absolutely any anime? (I see some from NGE, but perhaps that's permissible due to Rebuild.)

Because I never play by rules this includes manga characters too. When I speak of Nausicaä I speak of manga-Nausicaä, the greatest fictional "messiah" figure ever conceived. Also best heroine ever while we're at it.

20. Arima Soichirou (Kare Kano)

Deep, complex, interesting. Kare Kano has one of best anime casts anyway. Not even remotely as entertaining as his girl though

19. Alucard (Hellsing)

Biggest ham anime has ever witnessed. Alucard is instant win card in any fight and instantly adds +100 Cool Points to all your troops in the battlefield.

18. Otcho (20th Century Boys)

Mango. Whatever. BADASSSSSSSS. Feels like a superhero next to rest of 20th CB's cast.

17. Mikhail Blanc (Macross Frontier)

Michel was excellent spin on Macross's Maximilian Jenius. Simply put incredibly cool dude and insanely entertaining, especially when screwing with Himesama's head. Hell, he should be on this list just for that

16. Simon (TTGL)

You want traditional hot blooded mecha protagonist? Traditional but perfectly executed. Delivers two awesome speeches. Fuck yeah.

15. Father Alexander Andersson (Hellsing)

Norio Wakamoto. Religion has never been this badass. Iscariot > protestants, nazi vampires etc.

14. Hikaru Ichijyo (Macross)

Certainly most sympathic mecha protagonist ever. Poor Hikaru, all the things he went through for that bitch Minmay... But he's no coward or weakling either. NOT asshole, NOT jerkass. Great character all around and of the rare breed

13. Alto Saotome (Macross Frontier)

Alto is by far one of the two most interesting mecha leads ever. Kawamori's troll on bishounen was initially character I didn't think much of but in retrospect (and having read couple of writings on him) he has emerged as extremely fascinating - if frustrating - protagonist. Conflicted and complex yet strongwilled and "simple". Unlike Shinji he's also badass but unfortunately happens to be in same show with Michel, Brera and Ozma who all leave him to shadows. He's also the one and only anime character of whom I could with straight face say has been emasculated and as a result has developed various complexes and urges - on the other hand he isn't fucked up at all. I think I like Alto less than nearly all other characters on the list ("Himesama suuucks" is something of a my catch phrase whenever MF comes up) but he is brilliantly written character - and awesome Valkyrie pilot. And source of endless humour due to his maximum traptasticness, which of course is the quality I like best about him.

Fuck yeah Focker. Awesome to the max.

10. Ozma Lee (Macross Frontier)

Ozma Lee is hardcore badass who takes no shit from anyone and whose VF is most bitchin' mecha this side of Gurren Lagann. Has more lives than a cat. But more than all this he reaches demigod levels by being so incredibly manly that he only does not only eat PINEAPPLE, he MAKES pineapple fucking pies. Now how insanely hardcore manly is that? No other GAR has ever been able to replicate that stunt. Plus verbally murdering Alto later in series gave insane bonus to his already enormous Coolness levels.

9. Coach (Gunbuster)

Norio Wakamoto. HARD WORK AND GUTS!

8. Ryouji Kaji (NGE)

He's a cool motherfucker, relatively speaking the sane man of eva. Kaji's the man!

7. Gendo Ikari (NGE)

Never has mentally broken man achieved so much. Pimp. Dat glasses. Dat pose. Gendo is simply put coolest thing to come out of Evangelion alongside berserk Shogouki.

6. Jet Black (Cowboy Bebop)

Most manly mama bear to ever grace tv screens. Has brains.

5. Porco Rosso (Porco Rosso)

Who gives shit about Bogart when we have Porco? Has some of the very best quotes anime character has ever produced.

4. Kenji Endo (20th Century Boys)

Best music taste ever. Best average joe turned badass ever. Never have storekeepers been so manly and awesome.


3. Kyon (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)

Best narrator ever in anime. Funny as hell. Reminds me of myself too, which is always a bonus.

2. Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop)

Bang.

1. Shinji Ikari (NGE)

Shinjis' number one spot proves men can never be as cool as women in anime no matter how many badasses they throw at us.

Whew, composing this Top 20 was HARD. There are some names that were left out (such as Kenshin) but for a moment it looked like I really couldn't muster 20 awesome male characters. Seriously, most anime male characters are either faggots, inconsiderate assholes, trying-too-hard "badasses" or total and lame pussies. Or shitty in general. It's quite a contrast to femmes list which I had troubles with because there's too many awesome female characters. :(

Sweet jesus, even if I say so myself this list is GOD TIER from start to finish. Every single entry here is awesome to the max. Unlike with males I feel absolutely no reason to comment on any of my choices. Thier worthyness is obvious. Nausicaä is Goddess, Ranka Lee is love, Sawako is HHHNNNGGGG and Major Kusanagi is more badass than most of the male badasses on their respective list combined.

If these two lists were to be combined only Shinji, Spike and Kyon would make it to Top 20
