For me as discusses elseware ( to lazy to dig up link) I don't like him even if I can understand him.

He chose to take on the role of husband to yui and father to Shinji, he betrays both out of his own weakness. The man knew what being alone and unloved was like, and how much having some one that cared could matter ( Yui ). I can't forgive the man because HE KNEW BETTER, and it way YUI that taught him.

I just can't forgive the man he knoew from being with Yui to show him how much some one caring about you could be worth. He's the one characer that knew better.
