This film was terrific,
Last Kizuna made good use of a Digidestined-as-villian.
Some plot notes:
I'm not clear why [the villian] can't just go see her old partner in the digital world. There's no reason the latter would be dead, and even if Izzy hadn't already done it, she has (also) solved the problem of needing to travel to the Digital World without a D3 digivice.
And I know there's something that addresses it, but Sora not fighting seems like a **** move. Bidramon as a bulky flier with a ranged attack is a staple in combat, even Tri made this clear.
But my only real complaint is that the new digivolutions didn't get much time to shine.
I also watched
02: The Beginning. It had a decent, if heavy, story. It explores further dark angles for how a digidestined -- digimon relationship could fall apart rather well.
But a recurring problem with the film was that the main 02 cast, the people were actually here to see, weren't given any focus. The director stated this story could only be told with the 02 cast, but I just don't see it. Iori gets no moments to himself, nor does Ken beyond vibing with Yoli... which seems like a missed opportunity given how well he could have related to what Lui was going through.
This felt a lot like Pokemon films where Ash stumbles upon someone else having a plot, and tags along. We get some fan service, but even this was better done for the 02 cast in Last Kizuna, where they were the B plot.
They also didn't have a "real" fight. Imperialdramon pulls off all these close-in impressive maneuvers when it first appears, flying around the city to avoid... nothing. And the non-fight finale lasts like 2 minutes, tops?
Oh well. At least they avoided Tri's annoying knack for ass shots. And bad animation.
The most exciting part about watching that film, was realizing this leaves the door open for a 3rd film to be coincidentally released in 2027 (when the 02 epilogue takes place).
Something to sum everything up. To finally give everyone a digimon, and fill-in what Gennai was hinting at when he asked Tai about his infinite potential.
I look forward to it.
