Tch.....Seems like you guys aren't really paying much attention these days eh? Well as it turns out the community of Hakone is heavily promoting the tourism prospects of attracting Eva fans to visit the place.
The ruse? Well if you guys don't know it already, the site of fictional Tokyo-3 is actually located in Hakone-a hot springs community a few hours outside of present day Tokyo. So all the mountains, places where the schools, Rei's apartment, Nerv HQ, Shinji's school, the location of Misato's apartment, the shrine where Kensuke and Toji witness Unit 01 fighting Shamshel, the location and the place for the Ramiel battle, all those a marked on a handy dandy map with comparison shots of the real life sites for these events or places in the anime.
Lately theres been a trend for many Otaku to go on pilgrimages or visits to the actual sites that have either inspired or are mirrored in the anime that they love. You know since anime studios often send animators on site visits to real places to get their inspiration.
For more information take a look at this handy dandy blog.

Yup it is in Hakone, it is quite famous for springs and resorts. It is also an attraction for drifting enthusiasts. It is an obvious thing, cuz' the Hakone region is in fact near Tokyo.
If you're the Japanese government and you decided to change location, a good choice is something near the original capital.

It was a little confusing with information of the new and old maps on the same page, but yeah, those do look like scans of the old map.
(Anyway, I like how the new map/poster features Rei in a kimono. It reminds me of this one NGE image of her standing in a kimono with the moon outside.)

HAKONE EVANGELION MAP
As you know, the Neo-Tokyo is located in the area of Hakone. Now Hakone tourist association has started a PR drive in joint effort with Gainax to promote Evangelion "sacred site pilgrimmage":

I never thought I would come back to Evangelion after EoE,
But I discovered Re-Take (or it found me?) and
now here I am.

hence my comment
I think only comment I've seen from Anno related to merchandize was something akin "just business as usual" and giving distinct impression he wasn't heavily involved and had "whatever man" attitude without offering second thought for the matter. This is just how we roll, y'know?
excluding symbv and Anno and Tsurumaki no one in Japan gives a shit about Asuka

Keh, I'd rather have the full map in one sheet.
It's worth noting that some of the locations on the Hakone map are different from...well... other sources I've found here on Evageeks. One thing I recall is that Misato and Rei's apartments are depicted on the east side of the city in the Hakone Map, but in other places they're found in the west.
Oh, and y'know an English version of the map exists too. At least that's what that blog suggests.
Edit: Well, found this from a discussion on Tokyo-3 maps and making a minecraft pic out of them. Ayanami's place and Misato's place are in the west, contrast to the eastern placement in the Hakone map.

Whoa, that is awesome. (By the way, according to the NGE episode 04 script, where Shinji is sitting at Owakudani is "a spot famous for suicides". >_>; )
Thanks so much for the information, I didn't even know an English map existed! I wonder if they'll make an English version for the new (2011) map, too?

the blog wrote:These English version maps are quite difficult to get a hold of unless you live in Japan. At Hakone Yumoto station, you have to ask for them at the tourist information building. They keep them behind the counter (and hidden from view) and make you fill in a paper saying where you are from and the length of your stay in Hakone.
Found it when I was looking for a Tokyo-3 map to use for Wreckage. It's got a download thru Megaupload for all the pictures the guy has taken, in case you couldn't see it. Between that and the PDF you should be able to find where everything is according to the people who made the map.
So... because someone went to the trouble of spotting all the locations, where does this map stand canonically?
