PTC Test -- Can you taste it?
Okay, so in me Science class today, we were talking about genetics, and my teacher had us chew on this strip of paper - one of those PTC Test slips, to see how many of us could taste the bitterness.
I could D:
Can you?
Tasted like phlegm, I nearly barfed xD.

How does talking about Genetics lead to tasting a Test Slip?
Cheese wheel in the U.S. Coast Guard.
I use something similar to that stuff on a weekly basis. It's called Bitrex (Denatonium Benzoate) and I use it to fit test people for dust masks. Also the stuff is common in products like bitter apple spray that you would use to keep your dog from chewing on the table legs. Is also used as one of those treatments to keep you from chewing your finger nails. (Mainly because if you get the crap on your fingers you can't get it off and everything you touch for the next couple days will have a tang of bitterness to it .)
Personally I don't know why you are freaking about it, the stuff is bitter but it's not that bad. But if it is really that bad for you the best way to get rid of the flavor in my experience is to eat a piece of dark chocolate.

Because some people are unable to taste the strip. Why they are unable to has a relationship with genetics.Joseph the PRPD wrote:How does talking about Genetics lead to tasting a Test Slip?

It's what the genes code for: Genes code for proteins, proteins make enzymes, and enzymes do stuff. If you have the gene then your body produces the protein structures that serve as chemoreceptors for the respective compounds. The ability to smell or taste a compound is dependent on the proper DNA code, and It the same with animals as cats can't taste sugar due to the lack of gene code.Joseph the PRPD wrote:How does talking about Genetics lead to tasting a Test Slip?
