Sachiel's explosion..?

And indeed any weapon the Angels use.(In particular, the beams/bombs/whatever that take the form of crosses) How exactly do they work? Are they particle weapons? Plasma based? It's never explained in the series. But since they're rather primitive I guess you can chalk it up to pseudo-science. :(

Your opinions/whatever?

S2 = Do whatever the hell you want. All the angels have S2's, thus they can basically use whatever weapon they can think of.

i don't really know if we can delve very deep into this subject because some explosions were used more than once for budget purposes. ex. sahaquiel's demise had the N2 mine explosion along with whatever bardiel did to blow up the testing facility. I think it would make more sence if they all had cross explosions don't you think. plus the angels alone are pretty far-fetched. i don't know if there are many people out there know what their beams and weapons are made out of. or are there?

Ramiel's particle beam ~ Positron rifle beam

I think there may be some kind of connection...

Misato mentions what the beam fired from the big diamond thing is; a particle beam. so i asume that's what all of the beams are made of.

They're cross shaped explosions purely to reinforce the religious symblism. The shape serves no functional purpose beyond that.

HOMYGOD! YOUDON'T believe that do you!

Thats only true on the serface if you look deeper by looking at every angel cross explosion frame by frame you see the true meaning of the series encoded by anno himself tuesdaynight before the show was released while the rest of the creative team went bowling. :P

More specifically, the cross-shaped explosions are there to look cool. And they do, don't they? Hells yes.

Slow down Monkey, nobody said anything about the shape of the explosion. The question was - how exactly did the Angels weapon work?

Ramiel's seemed to involve an "Inner Torus Reactor", whatever the hell that is.

The weapon used against it was something about torus rotation also.

A torus reactor is just a fancy way of saying a fusion reactor and a torus rotation is just a fancy way of describing a super fluid (liquid that flows in a circle without any resistance or friction). Eva isn't a true science fiction so the logic of the weapons is easy to follow, the bigger and flashier the beam of light is, the more destructive the weapon. Analyzing eva's weapons is as silly as analyzing the skull structure of an anime character based on their oversized eyes and nonexistent noses. The answer to both is that animators like to draw it like that. Chalk it up to pseudoscience. Anime tends to make for terrible science fiction, pick up a book by Arthur C. Clarke if you want good sci-fi.

One more thing, using a positron ray in the atmosphere would yield the same effective result as using a taser underwater.

Indeed. Anno and company threw in a lot of interesting scientific theories and principles, but in really far flung and abstract ways.

but if used in a vacuum ie. space it would- in theory- it'd work as dandy as dandylion & burdock. out of a vacuum, however, it would have the same effect as a tazer but a tazer that releases an atomic explosion when used....

Hmmm well maybe Ramiel had a way of clearing all the atmosphere partciles out of the way of the positrons. Not sure how you could go about forming a vacuum in the atmosphere around the beam though.

Positrons are antimatter meaning it's an area of effect weapon on the scale of miles. For reference, a fission bomb like the ones used in WW2 only converted a small amount of the total uranium/plutonium into energy. Antimatter and an equivalent mass of matter convert completely into energy. Of course positrons and electrons are much lighter than nuclei but the idea is the same. You end up with a mushroom cloud. Anime weapons ->bigger flashier lights, bigger boom. If you want it to sound fancy than say big high intensity electromagnetic waves fired at high frequencies. Now let's discuss what human evolutionary patterns in the Eva universe lead to the development of humans with blue and purple hair.

Assuming that your positrons are travelling at a significantly relativistic velocity, conservation of momentum would at least keep most of the annihilation products heading away from the rifle (abberation/focussing effects). The weapon would be as suited for precision sniping as a shotgun or flamethrower.

Some sort of pilot beam to blast air out of the way first would also help.

1. positrons/electrons are nearly massless, they bounce around even when they approach the speed of light, think about your old fashioned monitors and TV's.
2. Since matter is converted in energy and the type of energy that we care about is electromagnetic. Electromagnetic waves travel at the speed of light so relativistic effects must be compensated for. One such effect is that you can't give light a momentum boost which is what you are suggesting. When the electron and positron meet photons will go in every possible direction with their common point of reference being the point of impact. If the momentum were to carry then the photons traveling away from you would in fact exceed the speed light. Again the old fashioned monitors and TV's work with the same general principles in mind. This concludes the physics lesson.

Oh, and please get off the whole positron rifle thing, it's not much different than saying something like atomic death ray gun. It's an anime about character relationships and the human condition not mecha and the fucking starship Enterprise.
