What if Eva was a generic action robot show?
I am not sure if there any thread like this already but I was wondering what would happen if Eva was just another generic action show with cardboard cutout personalities? In what ways would it be the same? In what ways it could be different?

Well, for one, this forum would've been undoubtedly devoted to something else. Second, it wouldn't be so popular OR revolutionary.

I never would have watched it in the first place.

It wouldn't exist in the first place.
And I would be doing much more productive things with my time. Like... um...... hmm.

1.) The EVAs would probably have been mere bulky mechanical pieces (a la Gundam, Mazinger Z, or Daimos) welded together. Yui's fusion with EVA could be with a sort of mechanical construct located inside the robot; better yet, just cut the whole thing out entirely and have Yui to be either truly dead or truly alive.
2.) The "Angels" would have been stereotypical Godzilla-like alien monsters. The overt religious symbolism, meanwhile, would probably be replaced with something more vague and clicheish, like ersatz medieval Europe.
3.) EoE's plot would be less mindwank and more about how Shinji-with-spiky-hair-and-spine and his friends fought some big bad boss, unlocking some sort of unknown power that his EVA possesses (usually involving some reminder of friendship or a noble sacrifice or something) and using it to beat said boss and his minions.
4.) Evageeks would not exist; I would not have known who you all are.

Tines, you are confusing the words "generic" with "totally fucking awesome."

-the only English language novel actually being developed in parallel to its Japanese version involving a pan-human Soviet in a galactic struggle to survive and to export the communist utopia/revolution to all the down trodden alien class and race- one of the premise being that Khrushchev remains and has abandoned Lysenko stupidity

If it was a generic mecha show, I wouldn't be the obsessed fangirl I am today. (I probably wouldn't have given the show the time of day.) Besides hearing that the show was psychological, the other reason I got into the show was because I also heard it was different from the norm.

Probably, but as you well know there is one more way you could alter the kids and have them fit more or less into the typical Bildungsroman character archetypes, (Asuka in particular):
The secret of Evangelion is that they took super robot pilots and reversed their genders.
If Rei was male, he'd be the awesomely silent/cool/calm guy. When he rushes that angel with an N2 mine under his arm sacrificing his life ... that is the scene where MANLY TEARS flow for A MAN'S WAY OF LIFE AND DEATH.
Asuka, if a man, would be an awesomely HOT BLOODED pilot. And pervy with his advances on Shinji, but a little tsundere.
And Shinji, as a weak little girl, puts it into context. You'd be fapping furiously to Shinjiko every night because of her shy demeanour.
And with girl Kaworu, Shinji x Kaworu would be amazingly hot...And imagine the reaction to star HOT BLOODED pilot Mansuka, kicking ass and ass kicking angel killer, saving Shinjiko's ass here and there, but she's catching up.
She's caught up
She's surpassed him.
Out does him consistantly, leaves him behind. For a man who swore to be the best of best, to be second to none, swore on the death of his mother who never loved him... outdone by a timid weak little girl. That would drive him mad, frustrated, furious, psychotic.
End of Evangelion-
Mansuka alone faces off against the mass produced Eva's. Mother is with him, he will fight

If you ever say that name again, I will hunt you down and neuter you with a spork. Sailor Star Dust *cue Shinji's bloodcurling girly scream* LiLi
leave my innocent Shinjiko thread alone! Reichu Asuka would be the one going "SURPRISE BUTTSEKS, BAKA!!!!" while of course in appropriate dress and, *cough, gulp, snort*, with a certain strapped on accessory THE Hal E. Burton 9000

Evangelion was the first mecha series I ever watched, so I suppose even if it was generic, I still would have watched it.
