And what parts of our knowledge of the TV series -- humongous continuity snarl that it is -- might not apply? Is the Classified Information even applicable?
In other words, if Rebuild was all there was of the franchise -- meaning right now, 1.0 would be all there was -- what would we know, and what would be suspected?
(I'm willing to allow some cheats, like Kaworu's name, which was never used in his scene.)

Yeah, I know. Everyone who's seen 1.0 has pretty much all the relevant info. I just thought it might be useful to have a place to go over what's for certain and what's up in the air.
Problem is, listing the known facts would be REALLY tedious. Let's see...
There is a UN-supervised organization called NERV which is fighting beings called "Angels." Three of these have been seen attacking Tokyo-3, the city where NERV's headquarters is located. They have been labeled the fourth, fifth, and sixth Angels; the first and third are unaccounted for, but a large being hidden in NERV's headquarters has been identified as the second, "Lilith." They seem to be impervious to most conventional weaponry, thanks apparently to "AT Fields" that protect them; even the formidable "N2 Mine" posed only a minor inconvenience when it was used. Therefore, NERV fights them with giant biomechanical humanoids called "Evangelions," piloted by selected humans through a neural interface (though they are capable of "going berserk" and acting on their own); the Evas are also capable of producing AT Fields and using them to neutralize the effects of the Angels'. Two of the Eva pilots, Shinji Ikari (the "Third Child") and Rei Ayanami, have been seen so far, though more are promised to appear (including Unit 02's pilot in Germany).
NERV is run by Gendo Ikari, Shinji's father, though he reports to a mysterious organization called SEELE which has made reference to killing the Angels as part of a "contract with Lilith."

In Rebuild canon, Misato and Shinji will boink in the most graphical manner that current animation technology available will allow. Also, Kaworu will be confirmed to indeed have an interest in Shinji's penis.
Seriously though, with the early introduction and identification of Lilith in the first movie, it's safe to say that the Rebuild canon and the original canon only share basic details for sure, ex. Shinji pilots the purple eva.
