Possible meaning of "O-nine system"?

When Ritsuko said "as in oni, a Japanese devil" I thought maybe there's not supposed to be a dash. Maybe it's not "O-9" but "onine" sort of like the noun canid and the adjective canine. Just a possibility. Any thoughts?

The "oni" comment is dub-only. ONAIN, the Japanese pronunciation of O-9, actually lends itself more to puns about masturbation IMHO.

The Japanese usually refer to masturbation as "onanī" (from the German "Onanie"). I can just see the O-9 System getting deconstructed into Onanie System in some H-doujin parody. (Sort of like how "A.T. Field" got transformed into "Ecchi Field" in the first short from Paradise Lost 1.)

No. About Onanie. Two different things. Onan got mentioned, like, once.

Now, the connection between O-9 and Onanie goes like this:

O-9 is about things working despite incredible odds against.
Onanie is about wanking. Evangelion is watched by fans, hence, fanwanking.
Fanwanking attempts, despite incredible odds against, to make sense of shit that doesn't really work.
Therefore the O-9 System is really about masturbation.
As an added plus, "O" stands for O and "9" comes from "69", the latter in paradoxical contradiction to the concept of masturbation.
