As an overage-b& I would recommend AD&D2.1 and HeroQuest -- though I have fond memories of Champions and ShadowRun, those systems are unutterably broken

How can anyone possibly like Children of Mana?

Anyway, JRPGs that come to mind straight away would be Earthbound, Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story. You might want to skip that last one if you don't like micro-management. As for western RPGs, the ones I've enjoyed most are The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and the lesser known Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.

I haven't enjoyed an RPG as good as Mass Effect in a long time. Can't wait for some downloadable content (not to mention the two sequels).

As for my recommendation, you should check out the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It's got so many side quests and shit, it's amazing. Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube was very good too.

Grandia games are known for mediocre stories and revolutionary and entertaining battle systems. Only played #2, and was impressed.
Final Fantasy pride themselves on changing too much around with every new release, so liking one is no guarantee for enjoying any other. Played a lot of them, VI-VIII are the only ones I'd recommend.
Suikoden is an alright series, with the two first really being the only ones worthy of purchase (or download in case you're realistic about it, and frankly noone can demand that you to pay for games that they don't sell anymore).

The two Chrono games are enjoyable. Xenogears even more so.

Suikoden II is the greatest game I've ever played, a verdict reached with no nostalgia attached.
Final Fantasy VII, played in '98 at the impressionable age of 15 and idolized it ever since.
Suikoden II played in '06 at the bitter age of 22 and still completely blew me away.

Evacub; you don't have it on you list so get your hands on the first two.

American RPGs; Fallout 1 & 2 and Elder Scrolls III & IV are all good. KotOR 2 is fine too.

No angels and no ghosts, no real victories to toast

to what end do you proceed?

Damn it, I can't believe I forgot EarthBound and Chrono Trigger. Especially since CT was my first, and a favorite RPG.

The RPG-7 is an ideal choice, as it is simple, cheap and ubiquitous. You might be able to get by with an RPG-2 if you're on a really tight budget. The RPG-16 is ideal for long marches, while the RPG-29 is probably excessive for the average user's needs.

Oh, and something about Fallout and its sequel.

I'm a level 20 Game Programmer Extraodinaire on the U.S. server. I'm currently trying to raise enough gold to buy a tuition.

Also, the Disgaea series is a satire on the jRPG that one can have oodles of fun with.

Because Pokemon, despite being an entry level JRPG, is actually fairly well designed (the first ones at least). CoM is probably the most hideously repetitive dungeon crawler I've ever seen.

Legends. It's about 1/3 the playlength of the original due to the streamlined battle and experience systems (in case you've got, you know, a life to live or just more games to play), and while the additional content might not seem like all that much, I can no longer imagine the game without it.

Well, yes, but some people prefer the Dreamcast version because of the crispness of the graphics and the soundtrack, which took a hit because of the compression that had to be used to fit Legends on one Gamecube disc... yeah, polygons were smoothed out and slightly overhauled, but the crispness was lost.

Bear in mind, I've actually not played the Dreamcast version, but those are some criticisms I've heard about the changes. But I thought I'd suggest both versions so one can judge for themselves.

But, yeah, personally the extra content gave more depth and gameplay. I hear finding the Dreamcast version these days is fuck-all hard, though, or I'd check it out.

I'm a big fan of RPGs. Though I wish I had more free time to spend on them =)

My favorites are Baldur's Gate 2, Deus Ex and Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.
In my opinion, they offer great story and great opportunities to ROLE PLAY, something that I feel is missing from many new so called RPG games.

There are other great games that I've also enjoyed playing, like the Knights of the Old Republic series and the Neverwinter Nights series.

I also have high hopes for Bioware's upcoming Dragon Age. I just hope its long development cycle and early annoucement does not turns it into another Ultima IX.

Rappelz (Think a Korean WoW, and FREE!) and Space Cowboy Online (Dogfighting with Single-Pilot Fighters in the (Deep) Future, also free). They're all really fun, but only if you got lots and lots of free time. Korean MMO's = grinding and grinding and more grinding if you don't pick up the tricks fast or if you're hunting for a particular item (damn those random unit generators!) that's worth a lot or is very very cool. I do not recommend Rappelz's and SCO's older sister Flyff, it's very silly and light-hearted.

Why won't anyone make a turn-based MORPG? It honestly wouldn't be hard to integrate a multiplayer turn-based fighting system that would also take into account people being afk mid-battle or disconnecting. I think it would be a mildly interesting experience, if anything.

Just imagine a 32-player tactics-esque match where each player would control their own avatar in a 16 on 16 battle. Can you honestly say you wouldn't enjoy that?
