I think he's using quotes from the old sega game "Zero Wings" to illustrate that the Japanese are not to be trusted with English translations, unless it is a professional translator. The problem is that English wouldn't be the only language that things would need to be translated into, and there's no guarantee that it would even get picked up by a distributor in whatever region the translated language is in. These publishers definitely are in no position to do world-wide distribution.

Oh I see. Just wishful thinking on my part. I not only have to wait for things to be translated I also live in the black hole of anime that is the American Mid-West. I always love when books are supposed to be in stores and it takes up to a year for anyone around here to get them. I really wish I could get hard copy of things like Ikari Shinji Ikusei Keikaku. I was just hoping maybe with the increase in American interest in anime they Japanese might consider helping up poor English speakers out with this one.

I also wish that stuff gets localized faster, but I don't think the problem is in the translation. Case in point: Newtype article about some hot new show gets published, it takes maybe a month or so before a professionally translated article appears in Newtype USA. Whereas most manga released in the states are in volumes (tankoban), but released in Japan serialized in magazines or manga books. So there's the wait for a tankoban to be released in Japan first, then (assuming a license has already been negotiated and acquired) the translation can begin, typesetting, and in some cases, the art actually gets changed slightly because of the katakana and hiragana that's used as part of the frame divisions etc.

I don't work in the industry so I could be being presumptuous, but that's my "educated guess".

You also forgot the time it takes for printing after that, negotiating with stores and online retailers to carry it, and shipping stuff. Not to mention, the time it takes to get the Japanese to send the finished Japanese art to America.

The best example I can think of using Newtype USA: My October 2006 Newtype Japan magazine has Rei and Kaworu on the cover, discussing Rebuild. Newtype USA finally printed that article along with its cover in their December 2006 issue. (As an interesting aside, Newtype Japan is bigger in size and has more pages. Also the page quality is nicer.)

Just to say, Japanese people are not the best at translators (becuase of this inefficient education system, but never mind)- only Japanese people who has lived abroad are used as translators, but they are in short order as not many Japanese-in-exile (sorry, no other alternatice) take up language as a profession. And not many out of that take up for the Anime/Manga industry.
