Random Asuka Musings
Does anyone else find it ironic that the source of all Asuka's pain and sorrow is also the biggest source of her pride and joy?
Yes.
The purpose of writing is to inflate weak ideas, obscure poor reasoning, and inhibit clarity. With a little practice, writing can be an intimidating and impenetrable fog!

Yes she does find out her mother's soul is in Unit-02. but she doesn't know that is why her mother is dead.
When her mother goes nuts and kills herself. This causes a large amount of emothional damage. At the same time she is chosen as an Eva Pilot. She never comes to the conclulion that the two events are related. The only reason she is happy at that point in the movie is because she discovers that her mother was always with her. Had she known what happened to her mom from the start odds are it would have scared her, for fear that it might happen to her.

It was not till the End of Evangelion that Asuka understood the relationship between the Eva and the pilot. She had until that point always interpretted it as a robot to be commanded, not a living being with a will that needed to be sided with. Though she was for a time the most skilled of the pilots, she was lacking in her understanding of how the Eva's worked.
As she was ignorant of much of that till that point, she could never really blame the Eva project for her mother's death. Not to mention that was all she had growing up. I would suspect that anyone in her position would devote themselves whole-heartedly to their task/position as a means of coping with a loss like that.

Finding meaning...
I think the Evangelions are a kind of symbol for life.
As I said in another thread you can synchronize with life, you can do what is expected of you, and often that entails doing more then should be expected of you, but you can not, or at least shouldn't run away.
You can't run away from life.
Asuka's problem with Eva-unit-02 is Ironic, but not altogether unexpected.
The Evangelion is the source of all her pain. It is also the source of the other's pilots pain, but in the end, it's the only thing that justifies their existance.
There is a similliar dillema present in everybody's life.
A mother's child can cause her pain and suffering, child birth is one of the most painful physical sensations that exist, furthermore, how about what the child does as he grows older, the choices he makes, these can cause the mother great pain, and heartache.
But a child has the abillity to bring a motehr the greatest joy imaginable.
Think about a job. Most people go to work doing something hard, or something they don't like, it wears them out, takes time away from their friends and familey, not to mention themselves, sometimes a job is painful, or at the very least a bother.
But the income the job brings ensures a person's livelyhood.
There many other examples, but you get the idea. Almost everything that has a positive side, brings with it something negitive or painful.
One more example is one Misato gives in episode three.
She says Shinji will have to learn that getting along with others means to interact while distancing pain.
Human Interaction can destroy a person, it can hurt and sting, it can destroy their dreams, or make thme lose something they held dear.
But what is existance without human interaction?

I asked "And where would you take me?"
At this the beast laughed, tears made of my mother's blood leaked from his eyes.
"I will take you to every place you never wanted to be, and you will hate it."
"Then I will take you to every place you've already been, and you will hate that also."
"Last I will take you to the places you have always dreamed of, and that you'll hate worst of all."

Not to me. I'd rather have people in my life and take the risk of being hurt then live in a world of sameness with not varity.

that would make sense, although the "ID" would be better. just because ID is the pleasure principal within the mind. the driving force that makes us do things because it feels good, while super ego relies on morals and the ego is reality
a man within the trap of one sided love is a man torn beyond his imagination.

LIfe without human interaction would be paridies , but not a happy one.
I have too much anime, yet it's not enough. Anime Addict, if it were a drug; I'd be dead.
The problem with instrumentality for me, is that, life without human interaction may be paradise, but it wouldn't be your paradise. Instead, you wouldn't exist, you wouldn't be "I," instead, you'd just be dead. A different form of death.
