edit: And let's be realistic. The man is a great actor, no matter how "overrated"(I HATE that term.) he is. He could play anything you toss at him and I'm willing to bet money on it.

The problem is that Depp is a huge name. If you cast someone as high profile as him, people expect him to have a huge role. Kaji is a side character in Evangelion, and if they cast someone as big as Johnny Depp in the role then they'll probably end up fluffing up the role a lot more than they should, just to give Depp enough material to keep him (and his fans) interested. He's a leading man, and I doubt he'd settle for being pushed into the background (not to mention that it'd probably be a waste, too).

I retrack my "Can't Play Ugly" comment cause his Mad Hatter looks pretty atrocious but there's a perfect example of Depp incapable of being a key player. (Dr. Parnassus was helping out a friend and should get a pass) Early script reviews have pointed out the Mad Hatter role was hastily expanded in Burton's new Alice in Wonderland the second Depp signed on for the part. The Mad Hatter has gone from a small supporting bit to what is now rumored to be the second leading role (and like Willy Wonka did to Charlie in 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' practically pushes Alice out of her own story) that plays a key part in all the action and even has a forced "subtle romantic relationship" between Alice & The Mad Hatter. Also I'm just against Depp because only E! and people without any sense of creativity immediately cast him for a part.

(P.S. Based off the 20+ years of lame fan-art, cosplay, fan-fiction, websites, and homages it doesn't seem like Edward Scissorchands can be considered ugly)

If not Evangelion, then perhaps a superhero movie. I'll let you know after I see the movie tonight. Interestingly enough, like Richard Taylor he's got connection to Peter Jackson.

I just saw D9, and thought it was great. I don't know if Blomkamp's style would really fit with Evangelion though, since he goes for the gritty documentary look, and I think Evangelion might benefit for someone with a more subtle / classicist style. If he were up for the job I wouldn't complain, but my top choice is still Danny Boyle.

Why: His role in All About Lily Chou-Chou felt very similar to Shinji. Looks the part.

Rei - Haruka Ayase or Yu Aoi

Why Haruka: Could look the part. Her performance in Cyborg She.

Why Yu Aoi: Versatile and talented actress who could look the part.

Asuka - Rinko Kikuchi... though it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to put in the Korean actress Jeon Ji-Hyun in this role.

Why Rinko - Versatile and talented actress who could look the part.

Why Ji-Hyun - Watch My Sassy Girl and tell my she couldn't play Asuka. Being that she's Korean, she would speak Japanese with a foreign accent.

Gendo - Tadanobu Asano

Why: Definitely looks the part, and a versatile and talented actor.

Misato - Takako Matsu

Why: Mature and actress, maybe resembles the part.

Kaji - Takeshi Kaneshiro

Why: Supremely underrated in his acting ability, could definitely play a smart womanizer. Even has a similar voice to Kaji.

Some people have been suggesting Anton Yelchin for Shinji. I can't really imagine Yelchin as Shinji, as much as I'd like that.

I agree with most of these except I'd always said that Asuka should be played by a westerner.
