First Ancestral Race
Did they actually make a reference to a first ancestral race in the series. I don't remember anything like that.

Nope. That's mostly bullshit that GAINAX slipped into the NGE2 game. It means nothing, and I think it detracts from the mystique of the series.
He was warrior and mystic, ogre and saint, the fox and the innocent, chivalrous, ruthless, less than a god, more than a man. There is no measuring Muad'Dib's motives by ordinary standards. In the moment of his triumph, he saw the death prepared for him, yet he accepted the treachery. Can you say he did this out of a sense of justice? Whose justice, then? Remember, we speak now of the Muad'Dib who ordered battle drums made from his enemies' skins, the Muad'Dib who denied the conventions of his ducal past with a wave of the hand, saying merely: "I am the Kwisatz Haderach. That is reason enough."

The FAR are the Xel'Naga, the Angels are the prototype which the Protoss and the Zerg were based on, Adam was a prototype Overmind, however, due to Adam's tendency to BLOW THE FUCK UP, the FAR/Xel'Naga decided to make the final version of the Overmind an incorporeal being.
The Lilim were just a wacky experiment made by a bunch of guys who got rejected from the FAR/Xel'Naga science academy.
EDIT: 666 get, iron maiden etc

It was pretty much stated that the Tokyo-3 GeoFront was a Forerunner installation (and by association the White Moon under Antarctica); with the "18th Angel" revelation in EoE, that the Forerunners are Ancestrals is complete. All the game did was add an official nomenclature to what we'd already been given.

When? Either I didn't pay attention the 3 times I watched it, or you're lying...
When in EoE are the FAR referenced? Damn it all. I still don't like the idea of the FAR and prefer the idea of these unknown invaders called the Angels.

When will people understand that Evangelion and Starcraft are linked in a GAINAX/Blizzard conspiracy with goals including the expansion of the state of Israel into taking over all of middle-east and the institution of a Satanic Jewish Nazi Communist regime in the US.

We're going down quite a ways.
IKARI:
Does it worry you?
FUYUTSUKI:
Somewhat.
FUYUTSUKI:
What is this?
IKARI (OFF):
A cavern left behind by someone, who was not us.
Though eighty-nine percent of it is buried.
FUYUTSUKI:
An underground cavern that was originally a neat spherical shape...
Is this the same as the underground cavern found at the South Pole?!
IKARI (OFF):
The data from them are virtually identical.

SCENE: Misato and Shinji in Misato's car, driving passed the failed Eva prototypes.
Misato:
They plan to initiate Third Impact - not with Angels, but by using the Eva series.
15 years ago, Second Impact was caused by humans on purpose.
(Flashed shot: Second Impact)
But that was in order to minimize the damage by returning Adam (flashed image: Giant of Light) to an embryonic state (flashed image: Embryo in attache case) before the other Angels awoke.
(flashed image: graves)
Shinji, we humans were born from a being called Lilith, who is a source of life just like Adam. We are the 18th Angel. (flashed image: DNA) The other Angels are possibilities of what we might have become - humans that gave up human form. (flashed image: Kaworu - Rei)
Sadly, we had to reject each other - even though we're all human...
Listen, Shinji... You must destroy all of the Eva series. It's the only way to stay alive.

Er. This is quite general. "someone who is not us" is a very general term and will not translate to an average guy watching the show into "Oh, it must have been the Ancestral Race", before or after said person finishes the show, something more along the lines of "Huh, those Geo Fronts hold the first two Angels, awesome". The seeds and stuff were all prominent in the show, and were there. The FAR are mentioned nowhere, and have nothing to do with the show; these Angels we see are mysterious aliens that no one knows anything about, but a group named SEELE knows how to use them to become gods using the Dead Sea Scrolls. This is all the show tells us. GAINAX may have approved this FAR bullshit as canon, but I still think it was stupid bullshit someone thought up and tacked on.

Well, telling us of the FAR certainly ruined the Angel's mysterious funkiness to a large degree, which is one of the reasons I oppose trying to make sense out of everything in Evangelion, especially since some things were intended to be ominious mystery nonsense like the mechanics of Third Impact.

You need to put both 21 and 25' together to get the Ancestral bit; 21 merely indicates that this was an installation left by aliens of some sort, in the distant past (long-ago and now seemingly departed aliens get labelled as Forerunners in the general nomenclature of old time SF).

quite; extees of some sort. Only when we get the information that Misato hacked out of SEELE do we find out that they are cousins.

You know what the FAR thing reminds me of, especially with the evidence from the Proposal that they were actaually always going to be there?
Alright, for anyone who has seen Cube, from what I understand, an addition to the ending that showed what was outside the Cube was shot, but never intended to be shown. The film was destroyed afterwards. I'm guessing that what was outside the Cube in Cube Zero was different from the original intention.
The main difference between what lies beyond the Cube and the FAR is that the FAR's existence was actually revealed, and Cube's exterior was probably retconned for Zero.
/Note, however, that, as I can't remember where I got this bit of trivia about Cube, it may be as true as the Mr. Ed peanut butter myth.

Why do you think they sent out Seeds of Life? They were all doomed to die of AIDS -- a disease so horrible, even their uber-technology couldn't combat it.
