Yoko Taro (Nier series) is writing.

Uhhh...odd lol.

Tsurumaki directing, hes not leaving Eva jail.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."

Very interesting that this doesn't seem to have anything to do with any previous version of Eva. Not Rebuild, not Anima, not Raising Project... It's its own new unique thing.

Also, super glad that Tsurumaki has finally been given the chance to lead his own Eva project free from Anno.

Eva is a story that repeats.

NieR has a lot of the same underlying pathos.

This honestly isn't that far fetched, but I never would have thought it would happen.

Day one.

I don't want to be an asshole, but Yoko Taro really feels a bit like a "meme choice". Like a very obvious "what do young people like now" choice.

He's also admitted Nier is basically Eva, so there's a risk I guess of having something similar again. Not if he is self aware and fights that, of course.

Tsurumaki co-directing feels to me like they're still not trusting the new generation of khara to take over. Which after 20 years of khara existing is like...bro.
I hope the female director is given control (it's the same directing duo as the -46 hours short).

Not saying this won't be good, but I'm not immediately feeling this.

Most excited about CloverWorks getting to animate Eva.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"

Tsurumaki is the new generation. He's been wanting to lead his own Eva project forever.

Yoko Taro feel both a great choice and a "fan cast", but I really liked Automata and you could evidently see the NGE tones in all his works.
Definitely not Evangelion inspired moment from Automata
Mild Automata spoiler out of context  SPOILER: Show
Image

My main hope is that it's a fresh start, no connection whatsoever to previous works, not even on a meta-narrative level.
I'd even go as far as create a complete new set of characters and retire the current pilots.

Eh, Gundam sales last year were at an historical high. Grandpa anime series are still pretty hot.

First thing that comes to mind is that the Asuka Short is the preface for the new series, that will be about Asuka. Timing seems anything but random. Tsurumaki is an Asuka fan, Yoko Taro is a EVA fan...

One thing I'm glad about is that Maki or Anno won't write it, because Rebuild and Gquaaax were kind of awfully written, although they certainly will influence this story big time.

Well, the Gundamafication of EVA has started as the Scrolls of the dead Anno predicted. I don't know how I feel about this, But I knew Shin will not be the end of it. Too much money on the table.

Fuck, we'll see I guess, but I'm not hyped about it, because too many times in my life hype got the better of me and got my hopes up. I'll judge it when I'll see the preview at least, and decide if I want to watch it or not. I already was burned once with Rebuilds.

GQX suffered from a change of concept and the second part wasn't as centered as the first part, but I have seen far worse Gundam products.

GQuuuuuuX was good IMO, which is more than I could say for NieR Automata.

Seriously, I just do not have high expectations for this with Taro writing.

I'm also hoping that this series is a new start. In the years since joining the forums, I've occasionally daydreamt about another spin on the series' main themes and technologies, in a new setting and a new cast of characters - if this new series amounts to something along those lines, then I think that's something to be excited about.

I also agree that I wouldn't be too interested in more meta-narrative takes - 3.0+1.0 satisfied that angle enough, personally speaking - but nonetheless if alternate versions of the classic cast show up as cameos or fill in a minor supporting role I doubt I'll be surprised. From that point my concern is less about the nostalgia angle, and more about the context appropriateness, for instance if familiar characters overshadow or draw attention away from the development of new characters, or if re-treading familiar themes impinges on the exploration of new takes.

As for the timing of the announcement - appropriate that it's after the Evangelion 30+ event and the premier of the new animated short. It's allowed fans to once again appreciate what we've enjoyed about the franchise for all these years before setting course for something new. And if not for the Rebuild film project taking more years to complete than anticipated, I would've imagined Khara kickstarting a new instalment some years ago. I suspect the key staff they've named in todays' announcement have been involved in discussions at Khara for over a year, and the included detail about co-production with CloverWorks implies that funding for the pre-production and production schedules could already be allocated. No word on a production committee though, or on an airing date - those could come in the weeks ahead, as I've read that there's another live performance of the Evangelion 30+ orchestra slated for April.

I think I don't have much to add here. Will obviously watch when it comes out, but right now it's a bit meh news.

At least Yoko Taro won't get dumb nerd hate, since he already has a cult following. Anyone less famous would get destroyed online if they don't live up to Anno's masterpiece(s).
Not talking criticism, you know what I mean, toxic nerd behaviour.

From /a/, about the announcement

Trailer was very short and didn't reveal much, but here's a description

>it shows the old building where kaworu was playing his piano and it’s all a big ruin and on the top of said ruin is a violin, and it’s all covered in a big amount of grass and leaves

but waiting for this to be followed up.

One thing I think we can say for certain, if it's Tsurumaki + Taro + Cloverworks at the wheel, expect a soft porn level of fanservice. Like cosmic level of buttshots in this bitch.

I didnt know there was a trailer.
If true this confirms one fear I had. Them reusing Anno's Eva cast.
Unless it's only Kaworu who comes back as like...meta element.

You know, the actual nightmare scenario here would be "entirely new Evangelion series without Anno" actually being a "14 years timeskip series".
All this hype for something new only to be actually all inside Anno's framework, with a known background and forced ending.

If nothing else it looks and sounds good.

Hard for me to tell if they're intentionally trying to evoke Rebuild there or its just because Taro likes moss-covered ruins imagery generally.

Thank God. I wouldn't want a Raising Project anime in particular.

As for Tsurumaki, it makes a lot of sense. He helped Anno a lot with NTE. The films ended up serving as a gateway for him into that position. He's ready now.

The instruments appear to be a mix of the piano from Rebuild and the string quartet from Death.
Eva 01 is redesigned, seems more "feral".
Music is pretty much Okabe, not much to say really.
