I just watched the trailer and it really does visually resemble NTE (which makes sense, since that's been the series' art style for over 13 years). As usual, I think they're hinting that Kaworu is some kind of mysterious piece of the puzzle through that piano I think.
I also like how EVA 01 looks even more human than in NTE.

The instruments appear to be a mix of the piano from Rebuild and the string quartet from Death.

I read that it seemed to reference the piano scene from 3.0, and then I watched the teaser and thought it more akin to that stage set-up from the scene Death too! I think their inclusion could be intended to suggest that the original pilot cast of NGE and NTE - and the roles that they played in those instalments - aren't the same in this new series, or are aged beyond recognition.

I was not expecting to see a new Evangelion design teased in this, though it's there, and it's definitely more feral and obviously humanoid than the armoured appearances we're used to seeing in advertisements and merch.

If nothing else it looks and sounds good.

Hard for me to tell if they're intentionally trying to evoke Rebuild there or its just because Taro likes moss-covered ruins imagery generally.

I got that sense too - is it fair to say that moss-covered ruins are more associated with works in Nier than in Eva? I've seen a good chunk of Nier: Automata media over the years but I haven't yet loaded up the Steam copy I bought on sale a few years back...

Something about this gives me a fantasy vibe. Maybe it's just the music.

Text that appears on screen (translated through google lens, at least) seems a bit vague and sort of edgy (not necessarily in a bad way).

As mood piece the teaser is very nice. Just not sure I want Shinji from someone other than Anno.

The cello and piano remind me of the scene where Shinji and Kaworu played in the destroyed school building that they planned for Episode 24 and never used. But it was redone for piano playing segment in 3.0. Do we get another Kaworu/Shinji movie? God I hope not.

I wonder the level of freedom from Anno's direction and guidance. I wonder if there is an overarching plan for the franchise. Like there is some kind of narrative in different iterations or Marvel movies.

It looks very Yoko Taro. Like a trailer for a new Nier Game.

This is an absolutely insane announcement. I was kind of hoping they'd do a video game with Yoko Taro, but an actual anime series? I am actually incredibly interested in this.

We don't know yet. I want brand new characters, but I personally don't think that's what we are getting.

The issue is Evangelion is known for their characters (and Eva-01).

I know Anno wanted Eva to be like Gundam, but that's difficult. Gundam changed their protagonists quite early on, preventing a extremely strong association between the protagonist and the franchise (although Amuro and Char are still very popular).
