OK, so there are characters names Shinji and Yui, already noted and I think Anno denied any conscious influence.

But has anyone noticed that in M23 part 2, the one drawn by the mezzo forte people, Yui wears earrings shaped like anchors?

Anchor in Japanese is "Ikari."
