I don't think this illustration has anything to do with the short. The short will be screened only for those who bought a special ticket. Those events will probably include the presence of Anno, VA actors and other staff that worked on the movie, among other things. And this illustration is of what venue will probably look like.

The pressing question is, will it ever be released outside of the limited screening, and if yes, how?

As a bonus for a new movie they're going to announce at the event :woohoo:

I'd say it'll probably be pretty meta. Wouldn't be surprised if Asuka knows what Eva (the franchise) is

the venue will not look like this. khara has already released extensive promotional material about what the venue will look like.

here's a preview render of the festival stage, and a video of the arena design.

the text on the released illustration reads: 箱根湯本演芸場

it should take place in some kind of entertainment/community hall in hakone!

I'm guessing the short will reveal a bit more as to what Asuka what up to during the timeskip or after the films.

I kind of wish they'd do a short for all the characters. Of course, Rei wouldn't get one, because she's the one Anno hates, given the latter two films.

If the short is exclusive to the festival and never released beyond it then it can't be too good or canonically vital, especially not if it's to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the franchise as a whole and not just another interquel. I wouldn't mind being wrong but that illustration is giving me strong Asuka-onstage-doing-rakujo with "After the End"-style vibes.

apparently this is not too unlikely now, haha. if machine translation is to be believed here, Asuka seems to be confirmed as the main character of the short.
they also released what i assume to be an illustration from the new short?

The drawing looks like it could be a settei sketch for a high school auditorium.

Crack prediction:

It's a high school reunion AU much resembling the wedding Misato, Ritsuko and Kaji attended in NGE. Everyone is even older than at the end of Shin. Antics ensue.

Yeah, you're right. If it's really going to be a rakugo-type play with Asuka... how should I put it, that would be super lame. I mean in NGE there was a theater instrumentality scene, but it was serious in tone, and appropriate. This though? I don't know. I almost inclined not to watch it. Not that there is any guarantee that there will be any chance to see it.

You know... I kinda wanted this to *not* be made by Anno. He made such a big deal out of "being done with Eva"... and while I do want his project to open up the IP to new creators to happen... well, that's just it. Does nobody else want to do so or is he just unwilling to let anyone actually do it?

I mean since, he was done and over with Evangelion forever for real 100% this time he participated in -120min, -46h, a bunch of events, and now this. I'm one of the people who disliked 3.0+1.0's ending for a bunch of reasons and I feel ever more vindicated now. And to be quite fair, I think he might have kinda lost his touch by now.

I would agree with you 100% if this were a new show. However, it's just a celebratory short. In that sense, I actually think it's cool that Anno is coming back.

I was thinking... Imagine if they used the original versions of the characters for this short. Would that be asking too much?

Anno will be "done with Eva" when he's dead, just like Miyakazi said he'd retire 8 times in the past 30 years.

Not the first time it happens though. Like, the big message of The End of Evangelion was supposed to be "stop using EVA to run away from reality" it was called THE END of Evangelion, and did everything to be a finite and definitive conclusion. And then not even 10 years later he did it again.

At this point, I will not be surprised that Anno will release several more movies, or even worse, he will write them. I would not be surprised. I guess the money is that good, or he really is out of original ideas.

You can dislike the films, but considering it took him decades to complete Rebuild and took quite a toll on him according to various sources "lol money" was obviously far from the only motivation.

Not sure what this means for the short.

If events like Jump Festa are the standard, I definitely would not spend €16 for a streaming of this.
Japan's idea of celebratory streams is mostly fluff stuff with VAs.

I think in Japan voice actors tend to be more like superstars. I remember Miyamura participating in a radio program and people listening to it just because of her.

This has concerts and such. My question is if there will be subs.

We'll probably be finding out very soon, but there was a livestream a while back going over the event and they mentioned that the short is something that could only be done for the 30th anniversary. That combined with the artwork seems to suggest it's some sort of meta commentary thing.
