One thing that only just clicked to me is that "fake Shinji" at the end is wearing a winter school uniform, so that's a universe where the Eva never existed.
Watching it in proper quality, I still think it's pretty cute but it's just a manzai, it's overall fanservice fluff. It's fun to see Asuka unintentionally kill Shinji a couple of time and blush when talking/thinking about him, but I feel like most of the discourse around this short is overblown.

It's quite reminiscent of Hesei-era drama CDs bundled with the DVD releases of an anime, a lost form of fanservice from a more civilized era :lol:

Lol can't speak Japanese but watching it was fun. I like the style. Reminds me of the possibility that Eva can be normal and comedic.

"Mari is taking Shinji across the station to reach Asuka" was just... I still don't see how this can be reconciled with any point 3.0+1.0 itself was trying to make.

It can only make sense by pretty much overwriting it. I already didn't like -120min for the reason... It's just too... anime.

3.0 you could at least wonder if she got to terms with having loved someone half a lifetime ago. And that was GOOD. Asuka's past tense confession in 3+1 was GOOD. All this stuff? Eh. I didn't watch Evangelion looking for a this kind of narrative. It's's too romantic. Soulmates, destined to be together. Meh.

3.0 is still my favorite. That movie had *purpose*. 3+1 is just a fucking mess. You know I'm reminded of the satsukawa interview again. There was no-one to reign in Anno's excesses and over indulgences.

I don't really think they were trying to validate any theory. The scene of Asuka and Mari is supposedly Asuka taking Shinji's place. It isn't really the "Mari is taking Shinji across the station to reach Asuka" theory.

Also, this short doesn't really overwrite Asuka's development in Rebuild. The Asuka wanting a new ending is Soryu. In any case, the overwrite is for NGE.

It was funny how she criticize him.

However, I don't think is a well deserved criticism. By the time Kaworu intervenes, the situation of the timeline is already quite messed up. Kaworu may end up making the situation worse, but it was already pretty bad.

Nope.
SPOILER: Show
1
00:00:23,357 --> 00:00:26,271
Welcome! Long time no see everyone!

2
00:00:26,571 --> 00:00:29,057
I’m Asuka Langley Soryu.

3
00:00:29,357 --> 00:00:30,629
And as you might have guessed,

4
00:00:30,671 --> 00:00:33,086
I'm Asuka Langley Shikinami.

5
00:00:33,871 --> 00:00:38,357
Together we are: Double Asuka Langley!

6
00:00:39,443 --> 00:00:42,229
This is our first crossover, right?

7
00:00:42,257 --> 00:00:44,571
This is our first meeting, right?

8
00:00:44,729 --> 00:00:48,843
Returning after 29 years makes me nervous.

9
00:00:48,914 --> 00:00:53,243
Since we're from different worlds, we'd probably never have met

10
00:00:53,271 --> 00:00:56,857
if it wasn't for this 30th anniversary event.

11
00:00:57,143 --> 00:01:00,729
But you know, Shikinami had it rough, right?

12
00:01:01,071 --> 00:01:08,943
Skulking around in skimpy outfits; wearing a lewd, holey plugsuit; and old feelings exposed!

13
00:01:09,300 --> 00:01:12,514
If that were me, I'd be so embarrassed I'd dig myself a hole and hide.

14
00:01:12,714 --> 00:01:14,657
Speaking of which, Soryu.

15
00:01:14,686 --> 00:01:18,646
It must have been tough having Shinji gawping at you in just your underwear,

16
00:01:18,671 --> 00:01:20,786
and with everything else that came after that,

17
00:01:20,814 --> 00:01:25,075
I'd be so embarrassed I'd run barefoot straight into the Minus Universe.

18
00:01:25,243 --> 00:01:27,729
Well, you've had your share of rough times too.

19
00:01:27,843 --> 00:01:30,500
Inhabited by an Angel, absorbed into Eva-13...

20
00:01:30,529 --> 00:01:32,100
You've been through a lot.

21
00:01:32,300 --> 00:01:33,643
Don't be modest.

22
00:01:33,700 --> 00:01:35,729
You got mental contamination, had a mental breakdown,

23
00:01:35,757 --> 00:01:38,700
and then you were eaten by the Eva Series along with Eva-02.

24
00:01:38,729 --> 00:01:40,343
You've been through hell.

25
00:01:43,600 --> 00:01:44,986
Tough, wasn't it?

26
00:01:45,143 --> 00:01:49,114
It was always us getting into those types of situations...

27
00:01:49,671 --> 00:01:52,829
I'm sick of it. I want a happy ending for once.

28
00:01:53,100 --> 00:01:56,657
Right, you especially seem to deserve it.

29
00:01:56,914 --> 00:02:00,100
Right? I want to find my happiness too.

30
00:02:00,300 --> 00:02:01,300
That's all!

31
00:02:01,543 --> 00:02:05,686
It might have been a happy ending for that idiot Shinji...

32
00:02:05,886 --> 00:02:07,357
...but it wasn't for me!

33
00:02:07,629 --> 00:02:10,371
I got dragged into that idiot's self-centred world,

34
00:02:10,571 --> 00:02:13,100
he strangled me and grossed me out!

35
00:02:13,514 --> 00:02:16,657
Where's the happiness in that?

36
00:02:17,043 --> 00:02:19,871
This world we're in now is my chance!

37
00:02:20,071 --> 00:02:24,657
Even if it's short, it's finally my story as the protagonist.

38
00:02:25,014 --> 00:02:28,757
Even if it's with that idiot Shinji, there are other scenarios, aren't there?

39
00:02:29,014 --> 00:02:32,971
Something with a clear emotional happy flow.

40
00:02:33,229 --> 00:02:35,443
That's what I want.

41
00:02:35,657 --> 00:02:40,214
That's my one and only small wish.

42
00:02:41,543 --> 00:02:45,171
Alright. I'll grant that wish for you.

43
00:02:45,286 --> 00:02:47,100
You stay out of this.

44
00:02:47,200 --> 00:02:51,057
You couldn't even make Shinji happy, we don't want your help.

45
00:02:51,243 --> 00:02:56,943
You'd just say something vague and make it more confusing anyway.

46
00:02:58,029 --> 00:02:59,171
I'm sorry...

47
00:03:02,100 --> 00:03:03,586
Um, Asuka...

48
00:03:03,614 --> 00:03:05,629
Butt out of this, stupid Shinji!!

49
00:03:09,086 --> 00:03:10,729
Right then, so what should we do?

50
00:03:11,157 --> 00:03:15,814
In my world, there's another game-changer character besides that boy.

51
00:03:16,043 --> 00:03:17,929
I don't want to rely on that newbie.

52
00:03:18,014 --> 00:03:21,271
I'll seize my happiness with my own strength.

53
00:03:21,514 --> 00:03:23,457
I like your resolve!

54
00:03:23,886 --> 00:03:26,929
Then, let's try the Shinji Ikari pattern.

55
00:03:27,457 --> 00:03:28,300
What's that?

56
00:03:28,457 --> 00:03:32,814
Sleep. Then wake up with your eyes in extreme close-up.

57
00:03:33,200 --> 00:03:35,686
Then you're someplace else.

58
00:03:36,271 --> 00:03:37,171
Ah, that!

59
00:03:37,600 --> 00:03:42,114
If you repeat that, the world you want has gotta show up eventually.

60
00:03:42,229 --> 00:03:45,071
Hmm. It's worth a shot.

61
00:03:45,900 --> 00:03:48,471
Episode Twenty-Six + One
Two Asukas

62
00:03:49,229 --> 00:03:50,729
Right, I'm off to sleep.

63
00:03:50,857 --> 00:03:52,500
Goodnight, Asuka.

64
00:03:54,143 --> 00:03:56,714
Evangelion-01, lift-off.

65
00:04:13,514 --> 00:04:14,957
Shinji, respond!

66
00:04:15,357 --> 00:04:17,414
Hurry, get up!

67
00:04:27,500 --> 00:04:29,514
Flying object approaching headquarters.

68
00:04:29,714 --> 00:04:31,071
It’s a Euro-NERV aircraft.

69
00:04:31,400 --> 00:04:32,000
No way!

70
00:04:36,357 --> 00:04:38,900
Evangelion-02 is already completed?

71
00:04:40,571 --> 00:04:44,129
A true hero always arrives in the nick of time.

72
00:04:58,700 --> 00:05:01,257
Now I'm here, there’s no problem.

73
00:05:03,029 --> 00:05:04,043
I’ll defeat you instantly!

74
00:05:25,657 --> 00:05:26,486
Cut!

75
00:05:26,700 --> 00:05:27,571
Are you stupid?

76
00:05:27,857 --> 00:05:29,971
There's no way I'd mess up that bad!

77
00:05:30,171 --> 00:05:32,914
And this had your world's designs mixed in too!

78
00:05:33,186 --> 00:05:34,600
Retake! Retake!

79
00:05:34,757 --> 00:05:37,529
Understood. Goodnight, Asuka.

80
00:05:53,100 --> 00:05:53,771
Cut!

81
00:05:54,143 --> 00:05:55,143
What is this?

82
00:05:55,429 --> 00:05:57,471
Why am I suddenly a giant?

83
00:05:57,786 --> 00:05:59,429
I thought you might want to be powerful.

84
00:05:59,643 --> 00:06:01,286
My happiness isn't like that.

85
00:06:01,543 --> 00:06:02,943
Retake! Retake!

86
00:06:03,043 --> 00:06:05,829
Understood. Goodnight, Asuka.

87
00:06:14,771 --> 00:06:17,114
Calm your heart and mind.

88
00:06:17,829 --> 00:06:20,100
That’s the key to victory.

89
00:06:21,457 --> 00:06:24,471
Checkmate in 31 moves.

90
00:06:29,143 --> 00:06:29,900
Cut!

91
00:06:30,043 --> 00:06:31,043
What is this?

92
00:06:31,257 --> 00:06:33,171
Why the hell am I playing shogi?

93
00:06:33,443 --> 00:06:35,314
I thought you liked competitive things.

94
00:06:35,343 --> 00:06:36,957
Winning by cheating isn't winning at all.

95
00:06:37,400 --> 00:06:38,100
Next one.

96
00:06:38,371 --> 00:06:39,871
Let's try a lovey-dovey romance or something

97
00:06:40,100 --> 00:06:42,800
Understood. Goodnight, Asuka.

98
00:06:58,457 --> 00:06:59,657
What a view!

99
00:07:00,243 --> 00:07:04,171
This place is called the Machu Picchu of Neo Tokyo-3.

100
00:07:05,000 --> 00:07:07,943
I want to see many more places with you, Asuka.

101
00:07:08,814 --> 00:07:10,086
Shinji...

102
00:07:10,957 --> 00:07:12,671
No way that's so embarrassing!

103
00:07:14,029 --> 00:07:16,114
But...I'm glad th-

104
00:07:16,457 --> 00:07:17,129
Shinji?

105
00:07:17,157 --> 00:07:17,900
Cut!

106
00:07:18,100 --> 00:07:19,700
Wait, is Shinji alright?

107
00:07:20,129 --> 00:07:20,700
Hm.

108
00:07:20,914 --> 00:07:21,486
Let's see.

109
00:07:23,943 --> 00:07:25,429
I thought I was gonna die...

110
00:07:25,929 --> 00:07:26,971
That’s fine then.

111
00:07:27,214 --> 00:07:28,314
Wanna go back?

112
00:07:28,486 --> 00:07:30,043
No, actually, it's way too embarrassing.

113
00:07:30,200 --> 00:07:31,114
Let’s try something else.

114
00:07:31,300 --> 00:07:33,529
Okay. Goodnight, Asuka.

115
00:07:41,743 --> 00:07:42,314
Cut.

116
00:07:42,414 --> 00:07:43,129
Makes no sense.

117
00:07:43,257 --> 00:07:43,829
Retake.

118
00:07:50,814 --> 00:07:51,457
Perv!

119
00:07:51,986 --> 00:07:52,557
Cut!

120
00:07:52,700 --> 00:07:54,871
Why am I imitating the First from your world?

121
00:07:54,900 --> 00:07:55,629
Retake.

122
00:07:58,729 --> 00:07:59,414
Cut!

123
00:07:59,786 --> 00:08:00,529
What is this?

124
00:08:00,771 --> 00:08:03,000
I thought you might not want to be alone like I was.

125
00:08:03,171 --> 00:08:05,457
Maybe, but I don’t just want to be with myself.

126
00:08:05,557 --> 00:08:07,529
I want to feel wanted, but not by myself.

127
00:08:07,643 --> 00:08:10,100
I see. Goodnight, Asuka.

128
00:08:13,343 --> 00:08:14,600
C-C-Cut!

129
00:08:15,086 --> 00:08:17,000
What is this? It's so embarrassing!

130
00:08:17,257 --> 00:08:19,671
I thought you might want to grow up quickly too.

131
00:08:19,786 --> 00:08:21,057
Not like this!

132
00:08:21,243 --> 00:08:23,557
Find a decent happy loop already!

133
00:08:24,186 --> 00:08:26,671
Understood. Goodnight, Asuka.

134
00:08:27,957 --> 00:08:30,700
Well done, Asuka-chan! You did brilliantly!

135
00:08:31,371 --> 00:08:32,986
Asuka-chan is a genius!

136
00:08:33,543 --> 00:08:36,729
Mamma's pride! Such a good girl!

137
00:08:36,786 --> 00:08:39,571
Asuka-chan can do whatever she likes, you know.

138
00:08:39,971 --> 00:08:44,300
Mamma is always watching over you, Asuka-chan.

139
00:08:44,486 --> 00:08:45,257
Cut!

140
00:08:45,543 --> 00:08:47,386
No, it doesn't feel right.

141
00:08:47,800 --> 00:08:51,029
It's uncomfortable. This doesn't feel like me at all.

142
00:08:51,357 --> 00:08:52,729
This is absolutely not it.

143
00:08:53,057 --> 00:08:55,200
Yeah, you’re right.

144
00:08:56,186 --> 00:08:57,529
Goodnight, Asuka.

145
00:09:37,471 --> 00:09:38,614
Guess who?

146
00:09:39,214 --> 00:09:41,329
A beautiful woman with an 87 bust.

147
00:09:42,786 --> 00:09:43,929
Bingo.

148
00:09:44,071 --> 00:09:44,657
Cut.

149
00:09:45,386 --> 00:09:47,157
It's not bad exactly...

Shin Eva Shinji and Mari leave the rest of the Eva cast behind. In this case (a comedic short, mind you) Asuka is taking Shinji's place, which would imply the people opposite (Shinji, Misato, Kaji) are being left behind, said goodbye to, or however you wanna think about. In any case it's very open what this means.

It's just too... anime.

Yeah it's an anime.

3+1 is just a fucking mess.

I think it's super cohesive.

Yeah, by completely and utterly rejecting it. I remember not long ago, how a general consensus of the public about 3.0+1.0 was "Guys, it's over. The movie telling us that it's time to let EVA go. It's the last one. Leave the past behind etc." And yet this message is pretty worthless now. You may disagree with me and that's fine. But as a viewer, I can't help but feel that the core message of Shin was devalued completely. Which I'm totally fine with, because I didn't like it.

Obviously we all see it differently. All characters of the short are teenagers. Even the whole growing up thing was reversed. It's almost like Anno didn't take those messages of Shin too seriously also, basically mocking Rebuilds and its developments. I can't shake this feeling.

I mean it's a celebratory, comedic anniversary short. Not the ending of a 14 year movie series.

After watching it in high quality, I have to admit I almost got emotional watching the short. It's everything I've ever wanted. After so many years complaining about Shikinami and even finally accepting her character's arc, bringing Soryu back in 2026 feels surreal. It's a love letter to the fans. They know we miss her and they're playing with that. It's good to see the characters I truly cared about one last time. I'm grateful to Anno for being able to write this story.

And as for the (Shinji and Asuka) fanservice, it's fun. It's just good and old fun. I have nothing bad to say. It was a magical moment as a fan.

I do think the "post-Shin" feeling like an Asuka apology tour sensation many have isn't unmotivated, to be honest.
How Shin deals with Asuka is quite possibly the weakest part of it (the goodbye scene is her looking like a stripper at a fetish party and not able to speak) and the reception among fans was mixed at best.
Anything Eva-related after Shin has also been Asuka-centric.

Khara needs to be sure people will keep buying Asuka merch for next 30 years too :tongue:

Honestly, you're likely projecting your own feelings. As you dislike Rebuild, you seem to want to believe Anno dislike it too.

In fact, I felt this short was making fun about EoE, since Asuka Soryu was complaining about her ending (Shikinami doesn't complaint about her ending). Maybe I'm projecting too.

At the end, this short is just a funny story.

PS: I've never believed the message was "Guys, it's over. The movie telling us that it's time to let EVA go. It's the last one. Leave the past behind etc." That always seem the projection of people who wanted the franchise to end.

I do. We all do to some extent, which is just part of internalizing any piece of art, I think.

But I don't think Anno dislikes the Rebuilds; I'm pretty sure he's proud of his work and wouldn't change a thing. It's just that I think a lot of viewers took the "Bye-bye, all of Evangelion" message as a pretty direct call to action to "let it go." And it's hard to blame them for taking this message at face value. It is very in-your-face. Everything about the Shin ending screams it loud and clear.

I can't count how many times—on Reddit, I think—people tried to shut down lore discussions with "Just let it go already, Anno said so" comments that found overwhelming support. I remember news articles on different websites titled "Closure finally," stating, "Well, this time, that's it," just to be proven wrong once again.

At some point, I even started doubting myself. "Maybe I really should stop," whatever that means. For me, EVA is still EVA and it always will be a part of me, so I felt like I was doing something wrong when the boss himself was telling me to stop. That's one of the origins of my resentment toward the Rebuilds.

Now that the short came out, it almost feels like I'm vindicated. It shows that EVA can still be fun, and I can enjoy it while dismissing the pathos of Shin. Now, to me, Shin's ending is just an expression of Anno's feelings at the time—ones that I don't resonate with. I can just move on from the Rebuilds and embrace what I love. And all those who were talking about "It's over" can bite it.

Anno has always said he wanted the Eva franchise to continue indefinitely (like Gundam). He reaffirmed this in an interview some time after 3.0+1.0. So, it's unlikely he really planned 3.0+1.0 to be a end to the franchise.

In any case, 3.0+1.0 seems to be his own "goodbye" to Eva, since he is leaving control of future projects to other people (even if he is still a consultant).

Also, 3.0+1.0 was also the conclusion of a 14 years project (or even more if we consider the connections to NGE), it isn't weird it has a "goodbye" feeling.

We all know how Anno changes his mind about things. Rebuild movies changed like 3-4 times in a big way during production. So, when no news were posted during 5 years, anyone would think it's over.

I don't think he dislikes it as a whole. However, there was a short made by his wife which showed that he wasn't satisfied with how JO and HA turned out back in the day, which is why he was always pushing himself.

Yeah, me too. Kind a goes beyond "It's just a comedy short." It seems that for Anno it's more than that. And though I still can't fit it in the canon, for me this ending is preferable to the Shin ending. Just emotionally, not necessarily as a story. But, maybe as a story too. If we knew what the story actually was, but it's hard to put the finger on that anyway.
