Hey, just wanted to post my in-depth thoughts on the short. Laying it all out, it ballooned to a length that is more appropriate (I think?) to drop as a link.

Personally, I found the short to be meaningful to the franchise as a whole, so I felt compelled to share my full perspective on the matter with fellow Eva fans. I’m happy to discuss any of the topics or points I make here if anyone wants to engage with them.

were you the one who provided the subs for the [BestGirl] release on the cat website?
I pointed out a mistranslation of yours in the comment section there. Should be 「新人に頼りたくない」instead of 「シンジに頼りたくない」. Release dude made a new .ass file with the correction

Wasn't mine, I translated that as not wanting to rely on "that newbie" (ie Mari). What they did is likely an unedited MTL not knowing the gender, TL-er seeing the "he/boy" and not picking up the context.

I see I see thanks for the clarification. It looks to me that their script is basically fine except for that one mistake.

Nice read. I basically agree with everything you wrote.
Actually you ought to share this to other more popular places too like reddit or even youtube, it's that good.

That's true, but there's plenty of people who in fact never have children who held that desire when young. In a similar vein, Asuka having a traumatizing relationship with her mother doesn't thus mean recovery has to and can only be becoming a mother.

It's not really that becoming a mother would be the conclusion of her journey dealing with her trauma.

It's moreso that she's alone with a guy she likes and who likes her. Beyond setting up shelter which Shinji's probably already done, there wouldn't be much for them to do except....well, you know. It'd only be a matter of time IMO.

The way that scene portrays Asuka angry about her menstruation makes Asuka looks inmature. It's unlikely the writers of that scene really thought Asuka represents someone who really don't want to have kids.

If the story really wanted to portray Asuka not wanting kids as a serious choice, it would have been portrayed in another way (she would have said this less angry at least).

In fact, the way Asuka rejects Shinji in this short is how they portray a "mature" decision.

This is probably splitting hairs, but people do in fact make life-long decisions about things they use anger to express. Something isn't more or less 'serious' because of the presence of anger. Or I guess it would matter on what you mean by 'serious.' In my mind anger is serious?

You're right about real life.

However, fiction tend to use a pretty obvious language. When a scene shows someone complaining in an immature and angry way, it's likely they expect the audience to not take the character so seriously. To be clear, the angry and inmature character can be completely honest, but the audience isn't supposed to support this character un this situation.

When a scene does want the audience to take a character seriously, it will usually make the characters to express themselves in a calm way. As I said, in this short, where the audience should support Asuka's decision, she rejects Shinji in a nice, calm and mature way.

I feel bad for the Khara intern who leaked the short on fucking MEGA.

Either they fucked up and lost their job (maybe their life), or they genuinely went on a suicide mission for Eva fandom.

I heard about it, so I rushed to warn everyone: do not post the download link for the leaked short film.

Probably the funniest thing I've seen all year - Sideshow Khara stepping on a series of rakes. Assuming this was a legit mistake and not a genius bit of guerilla marketing, that is.

Something interesting I noticed in the HD copy is they actually added film grain and subtle cell layer shadow for shots that were integrated with footage from NGE. That was a nice touch.

Man, what is even up with Anno?

That part with Kaworu is... weird. Honestly kinda disrespectful to the character and his fans.

IDK. Something bugs me. It's too... cheap. It's like -120min, but 120x worse.

To quote myself:

Imagine seeing God.
And after you've seen God, a few days later, still recovering from that, you see the risen Christ.
That's what seeing the camrip and then the leakrip of this short felt like

(I'm an atheist btw lol)

I feel kinda sorry for khara, I'll get this immediately when it comes out legally (in some sort of bluray covering the anniversary event I imagine).
But the way it was released really feels kinda at odds with current times.

I'll also say the camrip has historic value for how it captured the laughs of the audience.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."

The thing is this might have been the plan all along. We'll never know cause of the timing. Cause yeah, in 6 hours is Shin Eva's anniversary.

The fact that they sorta validated some of the funniest cope theories from 2021 is amazing. I mean... "Mari is taking Shinji across the station to reach Asuka" was just... I still don't see how this can be reconciled with any point 3.0+1.0 itself was trying to make.

It can only make sense by pretty much overwriting it. I already didn't like -120min for the reason... It's just too... anime.

3.0 you could at least wonder if she got to terms with having loved someone half a lifetime ago. And that was GOOD. Asuka's past tense confession in 3+1 was GOOD. All this stuff? Eh. I didn't watch Evangelion looking for a this kind of narrative. It's's too romantic. Soulmates, destined to be together. Meh.

3.0 is still my favorite. That movie had *purpose*. 3+1 is just a fucking mess. You know I'm reminded of the satsukawa interview again. There was no-one to reign in Anno's excesses and over indulgences.

It's simple really. That was a message from Anno to himself and a result of his personal relationship with the franchise, and the 14-year marathon of the Rebuild. If you look at it this way, it makes sense that it's all was for himself. But Anno needs to continue to expand EVA franchise as he originally planned, and as a businessman, he's only interested in growth and expansion and new EVA otakus. So, as viewers we can pretty much forget that 3.0+1.0 ever existed. If you want to continue watching EVA content that is.

It's pretty much not a secret that Asuka always had a thing for Shinji, and vice versa, so I don't know why it seems so surprising for many.

View Original PostFelipeFritschF wrote:It's just too... anime.

The half of the original show was exactly like that, full of classic anime comedy. That was the purpose of the short to bring back that spirit of the 90's anime. I honestly loved that it is not all doom and gloom of the last two Rebuild movies, that was getting tiring already in 3.0. And, well, it is anime.

View Original PostFelipeFritschF wrote:That part with Kaworu is... weird. Honestly kinda disrespectful to the character and his fans.

It was pretty much in Asuka's style, to tear him a new one, for essentially fucking it up in every timeline. Well deserved criticism, if I say so myself.
