UN status as a world government

Do we have any indications, explicit or implicit, of the UN's assumed status as a world government other than the fact that the UN has subsumed the original national military forces into a supranational military under its apparently exclusive control (notwithstanding new national military forces like the JSSDF, and whatever forces China and Vietnam had fielded in their war over the Spartly Islands), Nerv being a UN agency whose authority often supersedes that of the Japanese government and even the UN military, and the phrase "development of a world led by the United Nations" from the Classified Information database?

I believe you summed up most things that NGE ever says about the UN; taking a look through our wiki page on the CI contents (quick ctrl+f for "united nations", so it's possible that I might have missed something) only brings up things related to Nerv working under them and these two bits:

so yeah, not a ton of things there, but it is fairly explicit that the UN is functionally the world government

Well, are there any possible alternative explanations that could fit all the data we have in our hands? Perhaps the UN is now more of a globalized version of the NATO military alliance with aspects of the European Union's mix of supranationalism and intergovernmentalism, ensuring that there are no more violent conflicts between the member states and having the teeth to enforce international laws and treaties, but having little to no authority over said states' internal politics beyond that?

There's a lot of plausible explanations in that general vein, yeah, but to my knowledge nothing that was ever solidly confirmed
