Shin Evangelion beats franchise record for the first day at the box office
https://blog.screenweek.it/2021/03/box- ... 70133.php/
740 million yen for Shin's first day at the box office, beating Q's fist day record of 650m yen.
The final numbers will be released tomorrow but I'm sure it could have performed MUCH WORSE considering the current situation.
EDIT: I hope this isn't being discussed in the Spoiler hell already

Re: Shin Evangelion beats franchise record for the first day at the box office
Excellent to hear! I was worried the box office would be hurt by Covid, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
On the other hand, sure hope this doesn't cause another spike in cases.

Re: Shin Evangelion beats franchise record for the first day at the box office
The numbers are amazing considering:
- The seating limitations.
- The reduced showtimes in four prefectures. (Which also unfortunately happen to be where the core fanbases are)
- The 155 minutes runtime, means lesser showtimes in a day compared to other shorter films.
Still, the insane number of showtimes this film has in a single theater and the extremely positive word-of-mouth would give the film a great leg at the weekly B.O. as there's no other major releases coming until next month (Conan movie). It may not surpass Demon Slayer but hey, at least it's still a highly successful one both critically and financially.

How much is actually due to the movie being good vs. because it's the finale of a popular culturally relevant franchise?/It's almost a literary classic already esp. in Japan.
Everyone saw Doctor Who Series 11 there was a big rating spike, but despite all the goodwill ppl then hated it so much no one tuned in for series 12.

Well, it's the first day so of course it's because of the popularity of the franchise. Nobody knew what it was going to be like going in. The numbers going forward after the first week will be an indication of it's reception.

Re: Shin Evangelion beats franchise record for the first day at the box office
By reading the audience reviews on sites like Eiga or Filmarks, it really seems like most of them think it's a "genuinely good" and "satisfying" film, compared to first day reviews of 3.0 which had tons of 1-2 star reviews and complaining they don't get the story and "feel", yet it's still successful because of the big name and curiosity factors.
Now 3.0 remains as the lowest-rated film in the franchise on most Japanese film sites. I know, I know, some might disagree and while I'm in a love/hate relationship with 3.0, this is a general opinion from the audience.
So yeah, I'm curious about how it'll perform for the rest of its theater lifetime with such strong first day reactions, but I don't think we'll see a massive dip in consensus rating (like from 4.5 to 2) unless the initial reviews gave people overtly high expectations and they got disappointed when they finally see it.
EDIT:
Found this photo of Grand Cinema Sunshine from yesterday morning (6:30am), it sure as hell crowded. I hope there are no spikes in cases because of this.

I mean lots of ppl were butthurt with EoE or indeed the last two eps too.
Q was amazingly bold & artistically ambitious, as much as it hurt my feelings. XDD

Re: Shin Evangelion beats franchise record for the first day at the box office
Is it weird that this probably unnerves me more than the opposite case would lol? All of my favorite Evangelion stuff has had wildly mixed reactions, like EoTV, EoE, and 3.0. Audience reactions being overwhelmingly positive feels, paradoxically enough, like a bad omen to me lmao

Re: Shin Evangelion beats franchise record for the first day at the box office
I can tell you most people that went to the morning shows yesterday (therefore, the first ones who submitted the ratings/reviews) are hardcore/longtime fans who've been there from the beginning based on reviews I've read, if that's enough to assure you.

Day 1 Box office results from Khara
And then here's an article on eva-info https://www.eva-info.jp/13137
EDIT: deleted some of my comments because it turns out I forgot how to read numbers in Japanese
I seriously wonder how it's revenue will look by the time it's Wednesday. The limited seating and lack of screenings will only mean the money will pour in slower than in normal circumstances. I wonder how its day 1 would have done if things were normal or better covid wise

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time (Shin Evangelion Gekijō-ban : | |), the "final" Evangelion film, sold over 530,000 tickets for over 800 million yen (about US$7.30 million) on its first day in 466 theaters on Monday.
The film sold 21.7% more tickets and earned 23.8% more in yen on its opening day compared to the opening day of the previous Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo film in 2012. Evangelion: 3.0 opened on a Saturday. while Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 opened on a Monday.

Re: Shin Evangelion beats franchise record for the first day at the box office
Seems like the IMAX and 4DX screenings really helped a lot in getting extra money despite the lockdown still in effect in some area. More formats means more venues can play the film simultaneously and this also proves that despite the tickets being slightly more expensive, people don't really care anyway as long as they get to see it, it's also a rarity for prestige formats like those two to have big crowds as they tend to be some sort of "premium" options. Not to mention this is a Monday number while most blockbusters premiered on weekends!

The average ticket price increased yeah, from the article in the OP
Shin avg ticket price 1.600 yen, Q avg ticket price 1.487 yen.

Re: Shin Evangelion beats franchise record for the first day at the box office
so they did a clever strategy then.
Or ppl were more willing to buy fancy IMAX tickets since the regular cinemas could only use a fraction of the seats
Well, where there's a will, there's a way, and a lot of ppl willed that movie in front of their eyeballs

Re: Shin Evangelion beats franchise record for the first day at the box office
That is reassuring, yeah. I'm only being half-serious anyway. I doubt I'll actually be disappointed, the hardest thing is just keeping my expectations in check because 3.0 set them so high for me, and everything I've seen since looks so good.
