Untranslated Material Compendium
For the past few days I have been collating untranslated Evangelion material. Part of it partly translated (like Schizo/Parano), some of it only mentioned or quoted (like Newtype 1997, famously so in Protoculture Addicts). Some have been known about for years but only recently translated, though not necessarily posted here (like Ogata's interview on "Evangelion Forever", which even includes previously unknown ones with Maya and Ritsuko's VAs, or Sadamoto's interviews in Italy), or recently partially translated (like Sadamoto's CUT interview and some S/P excerpts). As always, thanks to Gwern here: https://www.gwern.net/otaku I have already found a number of sources already translated but not present there, and have sent them to him.
I have organized it into:
* Production Material
* Interviews (Anno, Tsurumaki, Enokido, Higuchi)
* Interviews (Sadamoto, producers, seiyuu, minor staff)
* Supplemental material
* Tertiary sources
* Unclear sources/to verify
* Spin-offs
* Supplemental material (Rebuilds)
I have mostly rechecked Western wikis and fansites so far, like of course our forums and gwern's anthology. And made only limited perusal of the Japanese sites. This includes several well-known archives that went down years ago but contain goldmines, such as this one.) This is mostly focused on NGE and not NTE, though of course with the imminent 3.0+1.0 launch that is bound to change. Unfortunately, it's quite possible I won't be able to work on it for the following days, so I'll post it here already. I had planned to do this along March and get some more people working on it in a more organized fashion, but then Anno went and shoved his lance in our faces.
Even though it is far from complete (I'd say I can still find twice as many sources), it's already a significant amount of material, some 70 sources. It is also organized by date, when possible, as well as priority (my opinion, to be fair). This is hosted on Trello. The idea is that it can be publicly viewable, allowing anyone capable to start translating and post it here - while also notifying if an item is being translated, which can be done after requesting permission to edit through Trello. I'm of course open to suggestions, including of a potentially better platform - I thought it might be better to put it on the Wiki where it'd get more exposure, but that also has the problem of being closed.

Re: Untranslated Material Compendium
Anyone here who has at least a competent grasp on both the English and Japanese languages is welcome to contribute. Your efforts will be much appreciated.
Edit: Also, thanks for putting this here, Felipe.

Re: Untranslated Material Compendium
Hi there!
This is great, thank you for posting and for all the effort in putting this together. I'd like to try my hand at translating some of this material.
I don't like putting stuff behind a paywall so I won't do that, but I'd like to remind people that I have a Patreon and a Buy Me a Coffee page, so if you'd like to contribute that'd be very appreciated. They're there mainly for helping with bills and stuff, which helps me have more free time from other work so I can do more translations.

By the way, should I just post the translations on Trello or make a post here?

Your efforts are much appreciated! I'm a bit on the broke end currently, but once I've got a bit more cash again, I'll throw some your way
You're free to make a Trello of course, but also feel free to post updates in this thread! It's always nice to have a reminder when new things are posted

Thanks so much, Rikki!
I think you could post them on the forums - your own thread will do fine. I can just edit the Trello later. The trello is and this thread is more to organize and list stuff, not share the translations themselves with people. I'm still talking with some other translators too.

Re: Untranslated Material Compendium
Thank you, Felipe!
As I was going through the list, I realized that I have translated this interview before:
1996 November : 庵野秀明×上野峻哉の対談. Newtype (PA #43)
https://trello.com/c/dGv9XIGu
You can read it here:
https://www.buymeacoffee.com/rikki/eva-special-talk-anno-hideaki-toshiya-ueno
The web site where you can read in Japanese are different,
buymeacoffee: http://anime-room.jp/modules/evangelion/eva-doc/ecom4.htm
Trello: https://home.gamer.com.tw/creationDetail.php?sn=863335
but I compared the two and confirmed that they have the same content.
(buymecoffee one has a bit longer text because it has some notes.)

Thanks again man! You're awesome.
Reichu is also putting together a Github for the extracted subtitle tracks. I guess it goes here.

Re: Untranslated Material Compendium
Thanks, Riki! You're doing a good job here!
Some interesting things about the interview in my own opinion:
Anno saying that Gunbuster had parody elements was certainly unexpected-I caught no such things while watching it, though I guess in an "imitation of mecha anime" way it...kind of works, though I'd have to have more idea about that whole subgenre in the first place to create a more coherent explanation. Anno saying Eva is his first time directing an anime is deeply interesting and I wonder what he means with that. The fact he says a theme would be whatever he's thinking about at the moment is nice and fits in well with the notion of NGE as a deeply personal work. And "the curse of the system" is another interesting, vague tidbit I would have loved to see him elaborate on...

By the way, I tired to find more information about "the curse of system" Anno said in the interview. But I couldn't find it as of now. If I could find any more detail about that let me share it here. Again, thank you for your feedback.
Re: Untranslated Material Compendium
Of course you're welcome to share any info you found about the "curse of the system" here as well!
The Sadamoto and Anno interviews are interesting as well-Sadamoto basically saying he hopes to make an easier-to-understand version of Eva makes a lot of sense, but I did grin a little at Anno saying he's already forgetting about Eva back in the '90s-NTE sure doesn't look like the work of a man who's forgotten NGE. Anno saying he chose to do Love and Pop primarily due to an interest in live-action instead of any interest in the story, themes and subject matter of the original is intriguing, as is his admission of disliking plans.

Re: Untranslated Material Compendium
Thanks, RikI! You're doing a great job here!
The Okamoto and Anno interview was quite interesting in terms of all the technical talk and the obvious knowledge on such matters the two reveal. Anno also reveals a lot about the state of his own internal atmosphere in that interview with Sadamoto- I mean all the "despair" talk.

Re: Untranslated Material Compendium
There a WHOLE LOT of gold here!
Highlights:
- apparently it WAS planned for Misato & Ritsuko to kill each other at some point (which was always y take on that EoTV sequence) - other things considered were "everyone dies (including Asuka, who "dies from madness" - maybe the agents wouldn't have found her in time during the bathtub incident?) & at the end Shinji fights Gendo, with the Misato vs Ritsuko thing being what spurns him on"
...the interesting bit is that I've read a different one from Sadamoto about how it was originally planned for Gendo to go down in a heroic sacrifice like Captain Nemo from Nadia.
Then in the final ending, Gendo doesn't actually do that much. He either just gives a motive rant and starts instrumentality (EoTV) or tries to do that, but Rei doesn't cooperate. (EoE)
- Miyamura drew the design for Asuka's monkey plushie herself!
- This gem:
Interviewer: Is it possible that the fates of the characters in the manga (drawn by Sadamoto) will differ from the anime?
Sadamoto: Well, that’s possible. I might have everybody die, for example. Maybe something like, “This is getting difficult to keep up… Okay, next month is the final episode!” -Kaboom! (laugh) Third Impact occurs and it’s over! (laugh)
Interviewer: (laugh) Well, I hope you won’t let that happen…
- A cut dialogue between Touji & his sister in ep 19! But the link to the translation is dead ( I really want it : ((
- a tidbit from around the time that EoE was made that goes like this:
Interviewer: "Whom does Shinji like, Asuka or Rei?"
Ogata: "Both. But I don't think he really likes either." Lol.
Obviously EoE was heavy on the dysfunctonality angle with Asuka being like 'you've never sincerely cared for anyone!!'
But as Rei says in EoTV the main thing that's in his way is his self-hate. You can do it shin-chan!
The manga did at times spell out the lore more clearly, like explicitly confirming that Rei's a side product of the salvage operations or having Kaji infodump on Shinji about the conspiracy.
