This is for the non-Eva goings on at Gainax, both old and new.

FemboyFilms announced on their Twitter that they found an 8mm film print of Daicon III Animation!

They're currently doing a color restoration of the film. It should be interesting to see what comes out from this!

Please, God, somehow reveal the location of Daicon IV Animation on 8mm...

Hot damn, here's a bit of news that I did not expect to see today

^ Me neither, man. I love lost media (lol, I gotta get back to properly digitizing the other half of that anime con tape), and had no idea something like this would emerge from this god-awful year.

Cool, now could someone find a way to get the Daicon IV opening on quality that doesn't make my eyes bleed? :rei_meh:

Not like I'm dissing the III, but there's a reason people prefer the sequel.

I would love to see that as well, but honestly the chances of getting the III animation on film were astronomically low. I don’t even know how that happened. The chances of IV being discovered as well is just as low as the III, so who knows what’ll happen next.

This is all fan efforts to restore III, as there’s no way any studio is gonna touch any of that copyright infringement for any reason.

For all we know Anno or any of the people that worked in it could have some copy of Daicon IV film in their attics. But like you said, they can't really do anything with it.

Dust and scratch removal has begun! They're very serious about this, it seems.

I've never heard of this group until news of their acquisition spread across Twitter, so I have no idea how thorough they'd be at this.

Hi, I'm not FemboyFilms, but I am the owner of the Super 8 print they scanned thanks to a lucky find (still $$$ but 1/3 the cost of the only other one I'd seen listed) on Yahoo! Auctions a while back.

The chances of getting the III animation on film were much higher than IV. The Daicon III convention ended up 2 million yen in debt. The only real asset they had was the animation, so they formed the "Daicon III Deficit Rescue Committee" and sold copies of the animation on 8mm reels and home video formats along with some other goodies.

This was mentioned in "The Notenki Memoirs." Unfortunately I've never seen anything to say that they ever sold 8mm copies of Daicon IV. That may just be a 1983 vs 1981 thing - two more years of home video rapidly eclipsing home movies - but it's extremely unfortunate.

Thank you for your input, DaiconOtaku! It makes sense that the 8mm film print would be from a result of home-movie releases. 8mm wasn't an unpopular format for home movies back in the day. I remember film historian David Kalat saying that he watched a lot of scenes from Godzilla movies that his parents would buy on 8mm film. These scenes would just be sold in the store very much like they would video-tape when that finally took off.

Too bad about Daicon IV, though. Knowing that history, it makes me doubt we'll ever see any version of that animation outside of laserdisc rips.

I mean, predictability is the central attraction and the narrative hook that we've all come to expect from the Evangelion franchise. How come Anno can't realize this? Twice? - FreakyFilmFan4ever

Man, I am the just the right kinda pathetic that Daicon IV never fails to make me teary eyed. That's such a beautiful beginning at a restoration, the colors and detail popped just that much more than the last time I saw it. Daicon IV speaks to me on a primal level, lotta different feelings hit me right in the veins and heart all at once. Thanks for sharing!!

Some sad news today, folks. Gainax issued FemboyFilms a cease and desist order.

It was fun while it lasted, I guess.

And the benefit to Gainax is.... ?

Well, the important thing to remember that Gainax can't profit from any of their Daicon animations, and, legally speaking, they really should have never distributed them either. They didn't get permissions to use any of the established sci-fi characters they used in their Daicon animations, so the whole project could get Gainax sued by Toho and other companies if Gainax doesn't keep the work suppressed. Showing the animation at a fan convention is one thing (it's a legal grey area, but many companies don't find it worth going after AMV or other fan creations over copyright grounds, regardless of whether or not the work was transformative in nature), but if Gainax is distributing (or otherwise allowing the distribution of) Toho's Ghidorah monster, then Toho could then sue Gainax to exercise their control over their character. This is less about Gainax being able to profit from the animation inasmuch as it is Gainax avoiding a lawsuit over distributing those animations to begin with.

It's messed up. I hate the fact that it bottlenecks art preservation in this fashion, but Toho lawyers are scary. And now that there are Groundworks representatives (the guys who handle Khara's copyrights) working art Gainax, I would be surprised if part of this was an attempt to keep Khara on good terms with Toho. Toho can (and definitely would) split with Anno over something like this, even though Anno is making their live-action Shin movies for them.

If it were just Toho's IP being violated, I can imagine Khara and Toho seizing the film's distribution rights from Gainax and restoring it themselves. But if there are multiple IPs being violated and scary lawyers from multiple companies on the lookout, there's no way that's going to happen, no matter how much Anno insists upon it.

Our best bet is probably that Femboy Films finishes the restoration quietly (so far no one is ceasing the film itself, and you’re legally allowed to privately do whatever you want with the film copy in your possession), then quietly upload the finished result to Archive.org. Outside of something like that, I can’t imagine anything else coming from this.

UPDATE: Femboy Films is interviewed by Polygon about their interrupted DAICON III restoration.

I hope the 'official' restoration does happen.
BTW If anyone ever wants any film scanned, we have an Arriscan and a Scanstation with all the options here, and are happy to scan anime films for personal use for anyone.
