lol, That’s what I mean. Nothing really makes sense with these kids, so you just kinda have to accept the scenes as they are presented and not ask too many questions.
PM me if you want specific spoilers for Shin Eva 3.0+1.0, but don't want the whole movie spoiled for you!

Well, I wonder if Death can even be considered canon in the first place. My personal stance on canon is that anything made without the direct involvement of Anno is non-canon. In other words, there are two continuities: The original one, with NGE and EoE, and the Rebuild one, with the four Rebuild movies. Everything else is non-canon, including Death since it wasn’t created by Anno.

If I had to consider Death canon though, I’d say the most likely explanation would be that they were some random kids that just happened to look, sound, and act almost exactly like the pilots. It’s not likely, but it’s better than the other options.

Evangelion: Death is an officially licensed film that utilizes much of Anno's direction from th eTV series, and I think Anno himself even re-edited the film for the home video release version Evangelion Death True(2). (Comeplete with a title card stating "This is how Evangelion: Death was meant to be done.")

Even by Anno standards, it's canon.
