Well, unless Pokémon racks in lots of money when being released amidst a pandemic I reckon this is very bad news for Shin Eva being released before some sort of cure or vaccine hits the market.

Either way, I don't think it's a lack of respect at all, they just know that most people have other things to worry about than being led on the nose by some childish marketing scheme.

Conversely, I believe the Fate did better than it's prequels at it's box office. A film like Doraemon is probably very reliant on parents taking their kids to see the film, I suspect that most pare are erring on the side of caution. Don't know that it is something Eva really has to worry about.

Khara's lack of interest in discussing the production of their projects stems well before Covid existed.

We already had a guy from Japan come on the forum and tell us that the marketing is still strong in their native country. Marketing takes many shapes, not just the creation of new trailers and TV spots. They have clothing lines and other product tie-ins all over the place. The rest of us are just blind to it because we live don't live in Japan. If you wanna talk about the lack of new video materials being released, that's fine. But marketing is being done. The thread title is inherently misleading.

Sorry to put it this bluntly Ian, but have you actually looked at marketing releases in the past two years or are you just making assumptions that no trailers must mean nothing at all? There has been a lot of new merchandise releases and crossover events, not least of which an entire new line of model kits for the Evas that sell like hotcakes and have been racking up a ton of hype for Shin in circles otherwise not interested in it at all. You are going in this in bad faith, and anything you have said in this thread so far just loops back to "khara doesn't cater to me specifically, so that means that they are neglecting everyone."

I must have imagined the lack of information in 2017 and 2018, and the fact that it took Anno two years to tell us that he didn't visit the studio at all the entire calendar year of 2013. I think you're on the other end of the boat where Khara can just Tweet out "Shin will come...." and I'm supposed to take this as juicy information on the inner workings of something that has been in the oven for eight years. Sorry, but I'll only take that as a news source the first half dozen times.

^If I may be so bold, it appears to me that you are going on the assumption that the film is still in an indeterminate state of production with no end in sight. There was a set release date, but the onset of this pandemic disrupted that and until something changes like we get a vaccine, better thearaputic treatments, or the virus naturally mutates into a less virulent form, they have nothing to set a new timetable for release on. With the possible exception of the soundtrack, the movie is in the can. All we can do is wait until they give the word.

What do you expect, a Hollywood style trailer that successively tells us the story of the whole movie?
While I personally wouldn't mind, as I don't watch movies for stories primarily, I'm sure a lot of people would disagree.
Also the highly metatextual story-telling ripe with hints and allusions wouldn't do well I a "IN A WORLD" format, imo.

The reasons that it took so long to make this film (not counting the Covid delay in presenting it) are various and complex. But it all comes down to the very opposite of a lack of respect for fans - rather, the desire to do the very best possible job however long it takes (took).

I agree with pwhodges and his ilk. Anno cares enough about the quality of not just Shin, but also the Rebuilds in general to take his sweet time with making it if that means that the end result will be good. He also has rather high personal standards (in the '90s I think he called Ep. 1 of NGE a failure, though his views may have changed) not to mention his stated wish for Eva to be the pillar of animation, so that means that he will have to make it really great if he wants it to have that kind of a status as a whole, especially since NTE goes together with NGE in a way.

And in regards to the lack of marketing, it's been stated already that there's plenty of that in Japan and when it comes to stuff like trailers, well, we already have two of them, not to mention an (admittedly unofficial) YouTube post of Shin's first 10 minutes. And personally, I like the more relaxed approach to stuff like that, since it means that I will get the truly important information when it is ready to come out and won't be bombarded with pointless marketing just for the sake of some sense of hype, despite the fact that I'll go ahead and watch the film anyway, as I imagine will the majority of this sub and a substantially high amount of the Japanese population (who are also getting a lot more marketing precisely because they are the people who are most likely to invest in going to see the film and then invest in merchandise based on it). Not to mention that when it comes to announcements/ trailers/stuff like that, Japanese companies tend to have a more relaxed approach in general (from my admittedly limited knowledge of the subject), so I guess you could say that this is also a little bit of a cultural difference matter.

Except George R.R. Martin was already getting shit from angry fans before Iron Man was even released. This kind of behavior has gotten worse, but it already existed quite before that.

From my experience Evangelion's core fanbase is Otaku of the 90s, but somehow over the years it's gotten at least some mainstream infamy... I saw mostly "normal" people watching Eva Q in theatres, whereas Fate is really just the turbo-nerds of the 2010s (which is a huge enough niche).

Important: As I have stated, I'm OK with waiting, and would disagree with FriskyIan. But I guess what he means is a "trailer" as opposed to a "teaser". It still feels as though the film is only a concept, or super far away in time, because we've seen so little, and we've seen more it was the first scene of the film.

A trailer isn't absolutely needed, but I would also like to see one as preparation for the film. I have explained before though in this thread why that trailer is not possible right now. It will come.

What we have gotten is the equivalent of:
https://youtu.be/_0s4wouFl6E

What we will likely still get would be sonething like this:
https://youtu.be/qyfxQU53GVw

Notice how the trailers feature a piece of the movie soundtrack, as opposed to the next episode theme.
And to put it in simple terms, the trailer makes you feel that "It is happening". And I sure want it to happen at this point.

I also think the next Shin trailer will be longer than the 3.0 one, as there isn't (that we know) a crazy twist being hidden that could easily be given away simply by looking at the character design. The trailers for 2.0 and Shin Godzilla are close to what I expect.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."
