Asuka in the Anime is introduced on board of a carrier in episode 8, the manga has her inroduced in a arcade hall in tokyo in volume 4.
In both cases Asuka and Shinji's relation is strainend from the start. In both the anime and manga this is clearly Asuka's fault.

But what if in a alternative scenario we mix episode 7 & 8 (A Human Work & Asuka Strikes!"). In this scenario, Shinji still visits the carrier on it's route Japan but find that Asuka is not their, having having flown to tokyo in stead (because of reason in A human work episode Shinji (and Gendo) where not informed of this). In stead on the aircraft carrier they meet unit's 2 backup pilot Kaworu (he makes a cameo in the 2 parter and will ultimatly return in episode 24). Kaworu does his introduction thing (personally I have him popping up coming out of a shower mimicing Rei but clothed (if theirs time to fill) and end up playing a piano, that moves in a piano duet with Shinji [it's a set up as both will pilot the same eva in a couple of minutes])

but then the water angel Gaghiel apears, Shinji and Kaworu decide to both fight the angel in unit 2. And Shinji wears Asuka's plugsuit (all Asuka's stuff is on the carrier), hilarity ensues whilst Kaworu plays expositionist. They ultimatly beat the angel (preferable loosing the spear of longinus to the bottom of the ocean witch could be a set up for episode 10 the magma dive was silly in concept and would have worked better with the deep ocean I think).

So when Asuka finally meets Shinji (Kaworu would have dissapeard). He had stolen her thunder upon arrival by beaten a other angel using her eva unit, was crossdressing in her clothes and unit 2 would be towed to shore in a comicaly giant Lifebuoy.

It sets up Asuka's and Shinji relation in a similar matter but makes Asuka's reaction a lot more sympathetic, whilst it is still not exactly Shinji's fault.

Would this be a reasonable alternative intro?

Basicly yes but I'm alway's afraid of ending up writing large blocks of text that are difficult to read, and have several story lines that are more suitable for a multi chapter fan fic, this is also something to long to write in the What would you change about Evangelion? thread
