Shin Eva's Indefinite Delay Support Group

Postby FreakyFilmFan4ever » Thu Jun 25, 2020 8:34 pm

This week is gonna be especially difficult, as it will be THIS VERY WEEKEND that Shin Evangelion/Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0: Thrice Upon a Time was originally supposed to be released to cinemas, perhaps even in a simultaneous worldwide release fashion.

I definitely think we need a thread to rant and rave selfishly about waiting FOREVER for a movie to come out, and yet still needing to wait FOREVER MORE before we can actually see it.

I just want to preface this thread by stating that, I, personally, understand the reasons for the closure of the theaters, the social distancing, the extra precautionary steps we need to take during a pandemic, and how that all results in the unfortunate outcome of this particular movie being delayed indefinitely. However, I also don't think our emotions about wanting to see a film series that was supposed to end back in 2009-2010-ish actually finally end as invalid either. Just as a fan of film, this is especially tough for me since this was the one movie I was MOST hyped to see. Don't get me wrong, I am eagerly anticipating some other movies this year, but Shin Eva was the only one I was actively avoiding spoilers for before seeing it. (For no other movies to come out to theaters within that time is just the cherry on top of this delay.)

Just so we're all clear, the delays and precaution are vital, but I also think it's important to express our frustrations about this delay. That's what this thread it for. But I also want to hear about ways you guys are coping with the delay. I'm holding a movie night with friends at my house for Kong: Skull Island on the eve of Shin Eva's original release date, and I think I'll throw in some Eva-related pre-rolls prior to the movie's start. (My friend group tends to be all over the place during movie nights, so I usually have intermission reels running that count down to the movie's start time to help them start on time.) I've also started re-reading Sadamoto's official Evangelion manga, just so I can get somewhat fresh Eva content before my eyes during the wait.

What are you folks doing during the delay?

Damn Shinji had it difficult, he had to sell his body to Misato to have a decent life.

OP, I'm half sad because I was supposed to be in Japan, but I started my first real job just a few days ago so I'm pretty happy about that too. I think I'm gonna rewatch the movies this weekend.

It's not as if the release to Japanese theaters would have meant anything to me, as I wouldn't have been able to travel to Japan in the first place, so this does not particularly faze me. I will go out this weekend as Pandemic restrictions have been lifted in Austria, since we have successfully constrained the Virus for now.

Since I live in the garbage country that has turned wearing masks into a political issue I will most likely stay at home this weekend, maybe go for a hike, wear a mask, get a little sun, do some reading, wonder why I didn't move overseas a year ago when I had the opportunity, remiss that my summer travel plans which included going to Japan won't happen, work on my upcoming films a little more and then rewatch the three Rebuilds Saturday night.

As I type this it's 11:20 at night in Japan on Friday, June 26. If theaters there have midnight showings the first screenings of Thrice Upon A Time would be starting shortly.

I'm not having much luck over here. I'm living in the country that has, currently, the second most cases of COVID-19, which really dissapoints me.. I've been under quarantine for 4 months now, and I was atleast hoping that I'd die knowing I watched 3.0+1.0.

That hurts,man.
I'll probably listen some music on my SDAT, Tracks 25 and 26 specifically:
25: "I will wait for You" by Connie Francis
26: "Hurt" by Johnny Cash

Well, the Fate movie that was supposed to premiere in March has officially rescheduled for August. That's a good sign that things are going back to normal, although I don't think any of us know how much more work has to be done on 3.0+1.0. they must have been pretty close to finished by the time the pandemic started, and I don't know how much work has been put into it since.

On the other hand, Covid cases have gone from about 10-20 cases a day in Tokyo, to over 50 cases per day recently. I'm not sure what an acceptable amount is for the Japanese government, but I'm getting nervous the virus could make a comeback there.

Yeah. It sucks just sitting at home in Japan today, knowing that there is another timeline out there where I would sitting in a theater watching the final Eva film.

I've been here for 4 years, and the plan was to finish off this summer with Eva and the Olympics, but my last few months here have pretty much been ruined. Don't know when I can head home in the coming months, but I'm pretty sure I won't be getting to see the Eva movie on it's release day like I was dreaming of.

Had there been no pandemic, I would be in Japan right now. Instead, I've been chilling at home (same old, same old), keeping myself occupied with creative writing and Eva analysis. Buds and I are finding so many new connections in Jo, Ha, and Q at such a consistent pace (NTE is insanely intertextual) that it's been impossible to keep it all straight in my head. Staying busy until this shit blows over will be no problem at all.

This year I feel damned lucky to live in New Jersey. At least in my part of the state, people seem to be cooperative for the most part. Then again, I could just be talking out of my ass; I haven't been getting out much, exactly.

Yeah, where I live in the States people are (for the most part) being responsible and wearing masks but it’s a big country with a lot of idiots.

If I understand it correctly the EU just decided that when European borders open again for travel Americans are essentially barred from entry.

Honestly, That’s the correct decision. I’m embarrassed.

Damn, I had completely forgotten that the movie was suppose to come out this month and on THIS DAY. I had been meaning to re-watch the movies as well as the original TV series (I've recently gotten the 2015 Broadcast DVDs a month ago) but nothing has happened yet. Gotta get to that soon. To be honest outside lurking/posting on these forums, Evangelion, including the final movie, hasn't been on my mind.

BTW, Evangelion 2.0 was released the same day 11 years ago (6/27/09).

Many of you might be surprised at what I'm about to write here, but I feel feel relief that it hasn't been out. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not glad it has been delayed or anything like that. The problem is that when the previous installments came out, I always felt...the best phrase I can think is left behind compared to many others on the forums. As there are people in this community who have various skills when dealing with the gap in time between the theatrical release and the Japanese home video release. Skills such as knowledge of the Japanese language or the ability to access over the Internet, shall we say, less than legal copies of the work. Skills I don't have. And of course, the discussions on the forums are happening at a rapid pace, but I feel I can't participate since it would be rather foolish to discuss something that you have no firsthand knowledge about. By the time I get a copy of the North American edition of the film, most serious discussions are pretty much over with. This was especially true with the delay over releasing 3.33. The sad thing about it is that this will happen again.

I'm going to use an analogy to give a better understading of what I'm feeling. Let's say you've been invited to a party. The previous times a party has happened have been pretty big affair; music, great food, and the other guests are a treat to be around. People talk about these parties for years after they happened. The thing is, you know you're going to be late, really late. And worse, this has happened other times when this type of party has been held. The day arrives and as you make your way there, you're getting e-mails, texts, social media posts, etc... stating how wonderful the party is. When you finally get there, you discover that most of the people have left, there's not much food remaining and the band has announced it's playing its last number. The real clincher is this is going to be the last party.

If I'm lucky, there will be English subtitles on the Japanese blu ray, but that's something I can't count on.

Had this been a normal year, I would now be bleary-eyed having pulled a near all-nighter moderating the carnage, if Q's reception and the number of spoiler-averse staff is anything to go by. As it is, I still have that joy ahead of me.

It's funny to think that, right now, in an alternative timeline, this forum would be exploding with an unprecented shitstorm of spoilers and discussion.

^ True, But I think the international release date would have been fairly soon after the Japanese premiere. I don’t think the spoiler evasion would have lasted half as long as it did for Eva Q.

∆ For me it'll last till there is a home release (worry).
And that's true about the forum. Makes me feel a little nostalgic and even more sad.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."
