The Music of 3.0+1.0

Basically a speculation (and hopes) thread about the music of 3.0+1.0.

There wasn't any noticeable theming for the music when 1.0 originally came out, but both 2.0 and 3.0 showed the pattern of Anno and Sagisu going back to their previous collaborations and reusing tracks. Looking back on 1.0, we could now say that maybe it just had some "stealth theming" by reusing NGE tracks. So...

1.0 - Neon Genisis Evangelion
2.0 - Kare Kano
3.0 - Nadia

More interesting to me though, is that the works that the tracks came from seem to mirror some of the themes of the three films themselves too.

1.0 - Still basically paralleling the tv series, thus inconspicuous
2.0 - Introduces new romcom elements similar to Kare Kano
3.0 - Introduces Wille, which parallels the intentions and aesthetics of the crew of the Nautilus in Nadia

So, I'm thinking that the final film will be...

3.0+1.0 - End of Evangelion (+Death and Rebirth maybe)

End of Eva Speculation:
SPOILER: Show
If they do try to do some track theming again, this is pretty much their only choice, as the only other work that Anno and Sagisu both respectively directed and composed is Shin Godzilla. I think that Shin Godzilla tracks also do have some potential, but seeing as he never planned on making a Godzilla movie during the production of the Rebuild films, I would lean towards any premeditated plans being based on End of Eva.

3.0 ends in a similar spot that would lead to 3.0+1.0 being "the End of Eva of the Rebuilds" anyway, with all the angels defeated and Shinji in a clinical depression type state like at the end of episode 24.

Also, Sagisu himself has been posting things about the music from End of Eva while making the sountrack for 3.0+1.0:

Tweeting a video of the guy who adapted Komm, susser Tod to English singing the song himself.

Having LOREN from the original End of Eva sountrack at the recording studio.

↑Both of these tweets were also tagged #シンエヴァ/#ShinEva.

Bonus because it is from Death specifically:
Tweeting a video of the orchestra playing a Kanon D-Dur remix. (It is a classic song, so it isn't impossible that they all just came to the studio knowing how to play it and did it for funsies at Sagisu's request, but I would assume that proper etiquette would be for the composer not to treat his orchestra like his own personal coverband and only ask them to play songs on the set, the ones they plan to record and use.)

Utada Speculation:
SPOILER: Show
I was personally disappointed that they changed the theme song from Beautiful World to Sakura Nagashi for 3.0, but I also can't see them simply remixing Sakura Nagashi to some "planitb" version for this last film.

I for sure think Utada will have a song in it, though it is a little wierd that we've seemingly never gotten even a hint from her about it. They confirmed over two years in advance her return for Kingdom Hearts III, and as time went on she even made joke tweets begging Square Enix to finish the game so she could finally release the full tracks.

I'm leaning towards it being a brand new track that will come out as a single too, but...

The potential from some "trolling" in the plot might mean we end the film at the "1.0" part of the title, so they might bring back Beautiful World one more time to send the Rebuilds off. If 3.0 and 3.0+1.0 are truly supposed to be their own "saga" in a way too, it would then retroactively make more sense as to why Sakura Nagashi was used instead for 3.0, since it would effectively be the Thanatos mid-story ending credits from End of Eva.

Galaxy Brain Speculation:
SPOILER: Show
Hear me out.

Eva isn't a stranger to licensing songs from outside of even Khara and Gainax.

-the songs on Shinji's Walkman
-the song from the film "The Man Who Stole the Sun" in 2.0
and most importantly...
-Fly Me to the Moon

Hear me out.

Fly Me to the Moon was released in 1954
Neon Genesis Evangelion was released in 1995
A 41 year difference

HEAR ME OUT.

Twilight by Electric Light Orchestra was released in 1981
Evangelion 3.0+1.0 will (hopefully) release in 2020
A 39 year difference

I think they could totally pull it off.
Sending off Eva with the song Anno and his buddies sent off their doujin anime careers to before starting Gainax. Anno himself even sent off his Animator Expo project with Cassette Girl, which was just a big Daicon love letter.

And personally, I think it is would be the perfect song for an inverse Komm, susser Tod sequence, the world turning blue as it bangs in the background.

As for my personal hopes. Yes. I would love some End of
Eva tracks. Specifically, yes, Komm, susser Tod. I'm not sure if it could work with the new story and where the tone is currently at, but if they made it work somehow, that would be cool.

Well at this point we can only wait and see, but:
First of all, thank you for sharing the the Tweets, I wasn't aware of the fact the the guy who translated "Komm, süßer Tod" sings it, and that LOREN is involved! So cool! No mentioning of Arianne Schreiber, or Utada... yet...?

This sticks to me, as it would be an utterly brilliant way to conclude the movie. I kinda feel like you've nailed it, and I'm kind of in awe I haven't thought about it... considering that the very first scene from SHIN shows us that exactly this is possible!

ELO - Twilight is a intriguing hypothesis.
In line with the memories I would like if Shin Eva had the GunBuster's ending song, Toki no Kawa wo Koete, and the Pachelbel's Canon. And obviously a new song by Utada.

Wasn't Arianne trying to get in contact with Sagisu (I guess via Twitter DMs) but there was a misunderstanding in how she wanted to come back to sing for Shin Eva? I remember reading that here.

Talking about the music of 3.0+1.0, here you have the translation of the song Mari is singing in the opening, "Kiyoko Suizenji - Shinjitsu Ichiro no March":

SPOILER: Show
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lL3X9IPV7Jc

The world is a long road up.
It's not the length.
If life is the truth, it's OK if it's short.
Tambourine -rine, -rine, tambourine
Tambourine -rine, -rine, tambourine
Ring the bell, the bell of love
Tambourine -rine, -rine, tambourine
Tambourine -rine, -rine, tambourine
Let's walk in good health!
Tambourine -rine, -rine, tambourine

While you tie up those shoelaces,
Look earnestly up at the blue sky
Those who talk of happiness,
It won't rain from the sky, won't rain
Tambourine -rine, -rine, tambourine
Tambourine -rine, -rine, tambourine
Ring the bell, the bell of love
Tambourine -rine, -rine, tambourine
Tambourine -rine, -rine, tambourine
Let's sing together!

Tambourine -rine, -rine, tambourine
Tambourine -rine, -rine, tambourine
Ring the bell, the bell of love
Tambourine -rine, -rine, tambourine
Tambourine -rine, -rine, tambourine
Let's sing together!

EDIT: some say its that song, others say its "Sagara Naomi - Sekai Wa Futari No Tame Ni":

The song that Mari sings in Avant 1 is 真実一路のマーチ (Shinjitsu ichiro no māchi), "The march on the path of sincerity", by Kiyoko Suizenji. The song part that we hear in the preview is this:

こ の 世 は 長 い 坂 道 だ け ど ~
長 さ じ ゃ な い よ ~ 人生 は ~
真 実 一路 ~ ~ 生 き た な ら
短 く た っ て か ま わ な い ~ ~ か ま わ な い

Konoyo wa nagai sakamichidakedo 〜
naga sa janaiyo 〜 jinsei wa 〜
shinjitsuichiro 〜 ikitanara 〜
mijikaku tatte kamawanai 〜 kamawanai 〜

This world [of life] is a long climb,
but it's not so much its length [the important thing], life is
the path of sincerity, if I live
it doesn't matter if it will be short, it doesn't matter

Japanese lyrics: https://www.joysound.com/web/search/song/22989

真 実 一路 (Shinjitsuichiro) is a Japanese idiomatic expression consisting of four characters (yojijukugo) which means "path of sincerity". The meaning of this expression is to advance to seek the truth with a sincere and authentic heart, without hesitation and falsehood.
What is essential is invisible to the eye.

I'm not crazy about Beautiful World (though I've become fond of it), but Sakura Nagashi I adore. I would have no issue with it coming back if it fits the film. What matters is it fitting.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."

No statements as of yet. Since the film has been delayed and he doesn't need to have the score finished ... well... weeks ago, he's probably waiting until his entire team can all be together in the studio so they can get perfect controlled recordings and don't have to do any remote recordings where they patch things together piecemeal.
What are France or Paris' rules towards gatherings? I know they're doing pretty good but they still must (and should) have rules against in door facilities like restaurants, cafes and recording studios having more than 50% occupancy. Also, it's very likely every musician & technician involved would have to be tested & self-isolate at least two weeks before recording could begin anew.

Sagisu did share the greatest mash-up of Evangelion & Tenacious D in history though.

P.S. Random thought: I'm at work and can't check at the moment but I recently revisited Anno's Ritual (Shiki-Jitsu) for the first time in years (wonderful film) and I'm pretty sure the main character "She" sings top herself one of the songs that Mari sings to herself in the opening of one of the three Rebuild sequels. Regrettably I can't recall which one it was from or where in Ritual she sings to herself and am unable to check at the moment but might that be a callback too?

I think I recall the scene you're talking about. There are two instances where she sings in the film. The first is when she is "checking herself" on the rooftop to see if life is worth living that day. (Goddamn, those scenes are haunting...) The other is when she sings while playing electric guitar. I want to say the first instance of her singing in the film would be the one that's called back to in one of Mari's songs, but I'm not familiar enough with the tunes to really pinpoint that for sure.

I know for a fact that Cutie Honey sings a song in Anno's live-action film adaptation that Mari sings in the beginning of 2.22. If the lead character of Ritual isn't singing that particular song on the rooftop, then she might be singing the song Mari sings in the opening of Q instead.

Oops. It might be that. I knew one of the Live Action films I revisited had a character sing a song that immediately had me sitting up going "MARI!"

Thanks for the info but Mari spends 2 minutes and 20 seconds singing, maybe she is singing both songs? Kiyoko Suizenji - Shinjitsu Ichiro no March and Sagara Naomi - Sekai Wa Futari No Tame Ni? The last one is related to a popular japanase history where a couple try to be happy by themselves despite the interference of the rest of the people.

@The_Max: My mistake, you're right! I had assumed that the second part was the continuum of the Kiyoko Suizenji song, while listening carefully is the Naomi Sagara song. Thanks for the info, I hadn't noticed this difference! So, there are two songs.

So I'm so glad to see that Utada will be back to lend the theme to the final Eva movie, even though it took 14 years.

I didn't take my Beautiful World one-last-reprise theory that seriously, even though it is what I actually would want to happen, it closing out all "3 parts" of the saga. With the announcements that the album would feature all of the previous music she provided before, I thought that fun theory was all but dashed. However, if you look closely at the Japanese track listing for the album, it ends with ほか, which means "other" or "and more".

The title One Last Kiss also has a feel to it that surprisingly evokes the final epilogue of End of Eva, One More Final.

So new theory fun:
-Sakura Nagashi is still (symbolically) like the mid-credits song for the 3.0 saga.
-Beautiful World will make a surprise mid-credits reprise in the film to finally close out the 3.0 saga.
-The rest of the film will be the "+1.0" epilogue, with One Last Kiss playing as the background music to the very final scene.

Mmm...
Sagisu in Avant1 used a slightly different version of "Persecution of the Masses" from Shin Godzilla, so it's not implausible a re use from it.
The use of some tracks from EoE it's very likely, since all the hits Sagisu is putting.
But could also implied that he just re-put the same team back, for another Finale. Why "spoil" the possible soundtrack like "Komm" if all of production it's still secret?
Also, from teaser 3 Unit 08 and 02 were involved in a very much Gunbuster like scene, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's some tracks from it.

Yeah, it's interesting to think that the whole journey's spanned 13 years and Utada has been part of it throughout. And I can't begin to imagine how RxS shippers will react to this title!
