Still getting through Persona 5 Royal; Just got all characters (including Akechi and Kasumi) to 99. I kind of want this game to hurry up and be over cause I'm starting to run out of steam with it. Some of the shadows in the new palace are just straight up not fun since they repel physical and gun attacks and are just resistant to everything else so they're SP sponges. Story wise the final semester also forcibly pads you out of the palace and even has you exploring a new area in mementos as well; which isn't bad on it's own but like I said, it forces you to stop so you can't just do everything in one day and then work on maxing out the social links you missed in the main story (or work on the one with Kasumi).
Please just call me Ian, "TheFrisky" is more of a title.

Played a little Mount & Blade Bannerlord, but that turned out to be rather shallow. You'd think that after eight years of development there would be substantial improvements over the predecessor, but besides the graphics, everything else seems lackluster. Granted, the developer intends for the game to stay in early access for another year, but still, I expected the major systems to be in place by now. So, being utterly frustrated by the lack of diplomacy in game and the lack of things to do except fighting endless battles, I went back to Europa Universalis IV, because nothing is more fun than watching numbers grow all day and try to paint a map with aesthetically pleasing borders. :emogendo:

Currently playing a game I've had on the shelf a while GTA IV. Been sitting downloaded for a few years, bout half way through the base game (the stories are also still unplayed) and its pretty great. I still prefer San Andreas though because it is my fav GTA game, but IV is certainly better in graphics department.

Also trying to Platinum Infamous, Infamous 2, and Dynasty Warriors Gundam Reborn.

Loved Resident evil 3 remake.
After seeing how much they changed and cut from the original game, I can say that fans of the original are justified for being furious at the game and Capcom. If they're going to remake 4, I will probably not buy it because I feel like they're going to do the same thing for that remake (Cut and change a lot) and I don't want to feel like I'm part of the problem for supporting it.

This is the same mentality that applauses Anime adaptations of Manga for basically using the Manga as storyboards.
The staff has to decide what makes sense in a new version of the game. The old version still exists. The fact that they cut certain parts is not a problem in itself.

I don't know...The reason why I feel like the anger is justified is because Resident Evil 1 remake exists, which was a perfect "adaptation" of the original that managed to improve and add stuff to the original instead of cutting many things.

I have no cock in this battle, I only ever played RE4 (good game), but I still think that cut content is inherently is a bad mentality, as it will stifle creativity if enough people fall prey for it (unless you're like going in-depth analyzing why this is bad)

If you want to get creative, don't try to remake something (as in, recreating it as close to the original as possible). Do something original. At least make clear from the beginning that you put your own slant on things - falsely advertising something as a remake instead of a(n) (free/lose) adaption (or a sequel or reboot) is just that - false advertisement.

idk, a remake 20 years down the line is inherently different anyways. Like it's a completely different game gameplay wise anyways, so why is there need for the story to follow the original step by step? Maybe the cut content just wouldn't make sense in that version of the game...
How to explain this... As a metaphor, for instance, there's so many versions of stuff like Romeo and Juliet, which are all remakes, and they all do their different spin on it. All of them are basically remakes of the original story. If you want the original experience, go to the original...

I know what you mean, I think we are just using the term differently. When I think of a remake in the context of video games, I think of something trying to emulate the original as closely as possible - a form of an updated copy, keeping as much of the story and gameplay intact as possible, depending on which is the important part. Like Age of Emprires 2 HD, or the Definitive Edition. People in that case want exactly the gameplay they are used too - they just want updated graphics and modern servers to play on. I haven't played Resident Evil, but the story seems to be the part people remember (plus the athmosphere, etc). Again, if you want to do a different story, nobody is forcing you to do the same one again (and I can see no reason why gameplay should dictate story at all). And if you change it too drastically, why not make a sequel out of it? Or just call it a reboot with slight alterations and be done with it. Remake is just too close to recreation in my eyes - for everything not bound as closely to original, the term adaption already exists. A remake specifically promises to be just like the original - not delivering on that promise for whatever reason is just lying to your customers.

The problem with video games is that you just can not simply go back to the original at some point. Technical limitations (software/hardware incompatibility) take care of that - circumventing those obstacles becomes harder and harder the older a game gets. Shakespeares original Romeo and Juliet is just a text - it doesn't matter if it is preserved digitally or analog, and the stage adaption is called that for a reason: It is necessarily always changing and adjusting to current tastes anyways. But a videogame running on code that no longer works just becomes inaccessible completely. Remakes, or recreations, thus have a different significance with video games.

People play Resident evil for the atmosphere and gameplay.
Resident evil 3 remake cut few areas, gameplay mechanics, puzzles, costumes, branching choices, endings and few other things.
Stories in Resident evil are B-movie tier and very simple and I think it could have been possible to remake the game with all the cut content intact.
Also, apparently time constraints weren't an issue with this remake, since it had 2-3 year long development cycle, whereas the original RE3 was done in a year.
All of this gives me the impression that Capcom was lazy.

Yepp, that's the big problem with remakes. The concept in itself is lazy to begin with - precisely because there already is an original already out there - so any flaw in execution only amplifies that feeling of having fallen victim to a quick cash grab (which, in my opinion, is probably the primary reason to do a remake in the first place).

I guess the only way to not make a remake seem lazy and cash grab is to remake something that was mediocre or bad to begin with.

Yeah, but when does that ever happen? I can't think of a single time a bad game was remade. Maybe a game that had serious flaws but was still well liked, but a straight up bad game? Yeah, not gonna happen.

Well, no, it is pretty easy to not come off as lazy: Updating the graphics (even if just to fit modern aspect ratios, for example) and making the game run a little smoother than the original, fixing bugs without removing any features, is really all that's needed in most cases. Just show the customers that you care and spent your efforts in the right places, and everything is fine and dandy. Remakes are just judged much more harshly because the audience knows exactly what it wants, for once: "The same again, but a little better."

Edit: What's lazy about doing a remake is that you don't have to put in additional creativity to come up with the concept, story, basic gameplay loop and mechanics. Everything else requires a lot of creativity and effort, and people appreciate that very much.

I think a remake of a mediocre/bad game can happen only if it's part of successful franchise. The original Nier had pretty mediocre gameplay, but it is basically getting a remake (or remake-lite) due to Automata being a success.

Quarantine sucks. But it has resulted in spending more time in the game room, working on the idiotic backlog of games that I have.

Devil May Cry 2
I got this new back in the day, but because I spent so much time with the first, it was just too frustrating trying to rewire my brain for the changes to the controls they made. I only played through with the Dante disc, don't know if I'll play through with the Lucia disc. The game was okay, a little underwhelming, and an obviously rushed or low-energy follow-up to the first. If I do play through with the Lucia disc, I'm pretty sure I'll never replay it ever again.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
This game is such a gorgeous masterpiece. And despite its cute, childish aesthetic, it's really, and I mean really challenging, especially if you're like me and you want to 100% a game like this. I completed it, but that 100% is going to have to wait for another time.

Super Castlevania IV
Another Castlevania down. I've collected and played most of the 2D Castlevania titles at this point. I am still more of a fan of the Igavania titles. That said, I enjoyed this one, and I should really get around to Rondo of Blood.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
I don't yet understand what's so great about this series. As someone who's played Last of Us numerous times, the first Uncharted very much felt like a prototype for Last of Us. The game is well-polished, but it's repetitive and it feels like there are certain components missing from it, like a health system. Got shot and stabbed? Just stand still behind that cover for 20 seconds. THAT MAKES SENSE. I heard the second game got inducted into the Smithsonian, and is a 2020 finalist for Strong Museum World Video Game Hall of Fame, so the sequel must have refined or evolved beyond the first.

Horizon: Zero Dawn
I spent so much time with this game. I just loved exploring the world and collecting and crafting. I'm short the Ultra Hard trophy, and the all trophies trophy (lol). I really enjoyed the premise, playing as Aloy, a strong, non-cliche female character, and that ending gave me some feels. I'm really hoping that sequel, which they are almost certainly working on, comes out soon.

Crimsonland
This game is a dumb little time waster, if you're not familiar, it's a twin stick shooter in the vein of Smash TV. It also has some elements of Doom and Contra mixed in. I'm currently working on my high score. Had a pretty nuts game the other day where i placed 74th world wide with 55.5 million points with the Jackhammer.

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered
I started streaming this recently. Final Fantasy VIII is my favorite Final Fantasy/RPG (although Parasite Eve is also excellent), and have played through multiple times. Playing the remastered version is really refreshing. If you'd like to join me, I'm about to journey to Timber on my first official SeeD mission.
