The Vision of Escaflowne.
So, I recently finished watching this anime and I fell in love with it. Tomorrow I'm gonna watch the movie. My favorite characters are Hitomi and Van. I didn't really care for Allen. Also, I think that after Hitomi finished high school that she went back to Gaea to be with Van.

This is one of those shows that occasionally surfaces on my feed in form of someone telling me how good it is, only to then vanish for months on end. I really need to watch it at some point

The movies function on their own terms. If people can't accept them on those terms, and keep expecting them to be NGE, then they probably should have realized a while ago that they weren't going to have a good time. ~ Words of wisdom courtesy of Reichu

Yes, you do (I'm probably one of those people). Just be clear that the film is not a sequel, but (like the RahXephon film, but more so; or Eva NTE) is a retelling which amounts to a new story with different characters. In my view you can ignore it - though the ending is pretty!

Re: The Vision of Escaflowne.
The Escaflowne movie at least has some very gorgeous animation (Something the TV series wasn't exactly a slouch in to begin with), so I think its worth watching for that aspect at least.
The story itself just seems kind of underdeveloped. It is kind of interesting that it had some radically different takes on some of the core characters and concepts compared to the TV show but unfortunately they couldn't quite do them justice in like 90 minutes or whatever the runtime of the film was. It really makes me wish the movie had been a Gundam Unicorn-length OVA series or something instead.
Also, anyone who hasn't seen the original show should really rectify that. It's good stuff.

Re: The Vision of Escaflowne.
I adore the series; it's one of my favorites. It definitely needed to be one cour longer, though. It started off perfectly paced and then at a certain point the whole show turned into this muddled mess that was rushing through its story far too quickly. The point of no return was probably the "Epistle" scene. Everything after that... thinking about it leaves me with this weird feeling that blends, like... nostalgia, helplessness, and ?decay?. There's probably a word for it in German, but not in English because English sucks at capturing super-specific feelings.
Saw the movie once a long time ago and hated it, but I might enjoy it more for what it is if I saw it again now.

I've been trying to look for the Funimation dub of the series, but everywhere I look it's the Ocean dub. Is there a place to find it? Is the Apple TV release with the Funimation dub?
Re: The Vision of Escaflowne.
I didn’t know there was another dub for it, least of all the Funimation one. I thought there was only one dub, until you brought up another one.
I rented it from a library over a few years ago, which was my first time seeing it. I remember those promos on Fox Kids years ago, but I never seen on television. I also saw the movie version that I rented from Netflix before seeing the original series.

From my understanding, Funimation crowdfunded their dub for Escaflowne, which had a different cast and added back scenes that were cut out of the Fox Kids version. I bought an episode from Apple TV and Funimation's dub is what's on it.

Ah man, Escaflowne! I really enjoyed that one. Very good series, interesting premise and story alongside absolutely phenomenal animation. Seriously, it's one of the most gorgeous to look at TV anime I've ever watched.
Also Dilandau is delightfully batshit insane.

Re: The Vision of Escaflowne.
Just started watching not too long ago after wanting another title by Sunrise in my possession. On episode 19. Intro is great, and soundtrack so far has been wonderful; plays perfectly with the world. The outro though... whatever ambience there was prior, is utterly shattered once the outro starts. Seriously. Lol. What. Completely clashes with the show's other sounds. A jarring transition indeed. Animation has been consistent, with some very memorable moments, and the show starts strong, but slows down quickly and has become a marathon at this point. I plan on finishing, but due to language (import), playthroughs have to be regimented. But yeah. I want to say letters VoE & EoE back-to-back because of how much I enjoy the music & animation, but there hasn't been much happening up until now.
