Seriously, though. If that's true, I really wasn't expecting that. Not in the slightest. I was just thinking it'd get new subs and it be on its way out the door. Assuming that this is an accurate claim (and not just someone on Twitter seeking attention), I would think that they would try to maintain some sort of consistency with Funi's English cast. It'd be kinda weird (though not all together bad) to hear English Shinji as anyone other than Spike Spencer.

Still gonna watch the subbed version, though. My only concern with the dub would be using Manga's old one. Seriously, EoE sans an English dub would be better for accuracy than using Manga's old translation. I don't want Eva to poorly represent itself so bad that it sends new English-speaking viewers into another 20+ years of pointless and needless confusion.

The overall assumption so far seems to be an LA-based dub (because of Netflix's location)—assuming a new English dub happens.

Why not, actually? Netflix will want to make the most of the kind of money they're probably paying for the rights - and limiting it to subs only keeps it niche and restricts its marketability for them; they'll want more than just the nerd viewers.

Anyone saying Netflix won't care about making a new dub need to remember this is the same company that did this. Yes, anime is 1% their business, but the want to dominate 100%

I forgot about the translation issues Khara had with Funimation’s Eva Q. It seems consistently true with both English dubbing companies that every time Kaworu and Shinji get together and a giant Impact occurs, the translations also go get trashed.

Yep. The home video rights here expired early this year (based on NGE DVD going out of print around February), and based on an identical situation with FMA:B last year I think there's no good outcome here.

For FMA:B the home video rights expired, Netflix took the streaming rights but the dub was stuck in a limbo: the previous home video publisher couldn't sell it to Netflix (because their contract with the Japanese publisher was over) so Netflix opted for subs. However I just can't see Netflix providing subs only for NGE, therefore I expect a redub.

The rumor of a redub was posted on a pretty popular Eva fanpage and the reaction to a possible redub was overwhelmingly negative. Here Eva was aired on TV at the end of the '90s (possibly in '99 I think) and the voice actors for the characters have been the same for the Rebuild too (except for Kaworu, who arguably got a more fitting voice), so there's a LOT of nostalgia factor in play too.

Still, maybe a miracle will happen.

I have nostalgia for the old dub too, but the voices weren’t even consistent in that. Toji had like four VA’s or something like that! I want a new and better experience, finding the old dub isn’t hard anyways.

There's a difference between "nostalgia" and "nostalgia of something that was objectively great".

That all being said, the English Devilman Crybaby dub isn't that great. That said, despite this. That show got a huge following when it came out.

You talking about the English or Italian dub? While I’ll trust that the Italian dub was good, it’s hard for me to suggest that the original English dub was objectively great. The EOE English dub is objectively putrid.

My original hope was them reusing what was good and scrapping what was bad, so I hope they redo the English and they keep my dear Italian dub, but I think they will redo everything. Which is for me, not a good thing. Still this is an English board so I won't keep talking about it.

I for one am very excited for Eva to come to Netflix next Spring. I'm probably gonna try to convince my dad to watch it with me. Also, I'm hoping for a bluray release of the series and the movies. Also, if we do get a redub I'm hoping for Stephanie Sheh aka Viz Sailor Moon to be cast as Misato just so the English dub can have the same person voicing both Usagi and Misato like the Japanese version did.

Italian Evangelion's dub is *not* objectively great. It's *just* subjectively great for Italian dubs situation as it was 20 years ago
It was the best one if compared to the other Italian anime dubs and to other foreign dubs, thanks to Gualtiero Cannarsi.

Btw, in this old 1997-2001 dub (aired on Mtv Italia in 2001) we have objective errors:
- "preview" not dubbed by Misato's voice (as it was in the original version);
- Angeli (Angels) instead than the original Apostoli (Apostles);
- "bōsō" (that literally means "out of control") translated as "berserk";
- "Neo Tokyo-3" instead of "Nuova Tokyo-3" ("New Tokyo-3"); in 第3新東京市, "shin" ("新") means literally "new" and it's different from AKIRA's NeoTokyo -> ネオ東京, where "ネオ" is really "Neo");
- a not perfect translation for 人類補完計画;
- L.C.L. pronounced in the Italian way, different from the original one;
- the translation of "shogōki" as "Unità-01" ("Zero One Number Unit") does not show the difference of numeration with other Eva Units ("shogōki" means "First Unit" and not "Zero One Number Unit" as it happens with other Units; in Italian we have also "zerogōki" as "Zero Zero Number Unit" and "nigōki" as "Zero Two Number Unit"; in the original version, "shogōki" is named with an ordinal number while "zerogōki" and "nigōki" are named with cardinal numbers);
- eps.01-06 dialogues must be translated again because of their errors, while 07-10 are a little better (dialogues from eps.11-26 are okay thanks to Giorgio Nardoni and Gualtiero Cannarsi).

The same Cannarsi is the first one admitting these "youth errors" and he's the first one wanting to correct them

When he dubbed Eva in Italian language, he was only a 20-25 years boy while now his knowledge / competence are the best in Italy (as they were 20 years ago for *that* quality standard; with Eva dub he set a gold standard in Italian dubs for animes and during these past years he has been chosen as the responsible for the Italian translations and dubs of *every* Studio Ghibli picture).

So, for Italian audience the best choice of Netflix is a new dub of Evangelion with scriptwriter and dubbing director Gualtiero Cannarsi.

For redub, my "best case scenario" is a completely new cast. (Original cast members could have short cameos for Easter egg purposes, but that's it.) Off-Broadway is a guaranteed place to find budget talent who will be perfect for voice acting, since they're already used to having "nothing to work with". There's also the trend in Western animation toward increasingly more naturalistic voice-acting, and that industry has a huge pool of versatile talent.

If Anno, Enokido etc. wrote these words, we must respect these.
Did they introduce a dichotomy (maybe purposely!) between the script and the english nomenclature? We must respect this.

In Japan, english means only taste for the exotic, like the cross-shaped explosions :-)

Talking about the name of the show itself, the complete title is "Shin Seiki Evangelion (Evangelion of the new era) - Neon Genesis Evangelion", a *double title* with two different meanings, like it was in Tomino's Ideon ("Densetsu kyojin Ideon (Ideon Legendary Giant God) - Space Runaway Ideon"); Anno did the same with Nadia, which complete title is "Fushigi no Umi no Nadia (Nadia of the Wonderful Sea) - Nadia, The Secret of Blue Water" ("Fushigi no Umi no Nadia" recall "Fushigi no kuni no Arisu", the Japanese title for "Alice in Wonderland"). Btw, I don't wanna go OT and I know what this topic could mean for native English speakers

I hope it does have an english dub available cause as much as i like eva, i'm not dealing with subtitles on my TV. It's already annoying reading them on a much smaller computer monitor, on a larger TV it'd be awful.

^ I probably mentioned this in the other thread but it bares repeating. For One Punch Man, Netflix only has Japanese audio with subtitles, no dub is present (at least in the US), so EVA may end up being streamed in the same way

At least when it comes to the US, it's likely that Adult Swim has both exclusive tv and stream rights to OPM dub ( seriously if you wanna watch it dubbed it's available there) so that's likely why Netflix only has it subbed.

Eva is different though, no company has streaming or broadcasting rights to it, so the dubs fate is entirely on what Netflix was willing or able to acquire.
