Best Pair: What Eva Characters Do You Ship?

I can't say that I'm too fond of shipping characters in media, but with Evangelion's characters, I ship ironically. And in this case, I ship by how sober I am.

ReiShin if I've had a couple beers.

AsuShin if I have an entire six-pack.

MariShin if I drank too many shots of whiskey.

AsuRei if I have a bottle of vodka before bed.

AsuMari if I raided my entire home mini-bar.

KawoShin if I'm rushed to the ER for alcohol poisoning.

RitsuShin if I'm being lowered into my grave.

MisatoShin if I get revived by a defibrillator and have my liver replaced.

GendoShin when I'm a ghost.

Which one is best in my drunken eyes is a hard choice, but if I had to pick a ship when sober, I'd definitely pick Shinji X Manga!Shinji.

In all seriousness, MariShin is my guilty pleasure ship, and it's somehow overlapped my previous taste in ReiShin and AsuShin.

I agree with all of this except for Rei/Kensuke. Rei just seems.....like an android. I think that was the intent, though.

I'm inclined to agree, although for slightly different reason. Rei/Kensuke is pretty much solely a result of a heteronormative urge that unless a boy is paired with a girl and vice versa, that character's journey is not over (only notable exception being old and grizzled/wise veteran/mentor figures), where I'd rather posit the question if that's actually a necessary step in a character journey at all?
Especially in the case of Kensuke, where we are outright shown in Shin (different continuity, yes, but it does still make sense with his NGE character) that he does, in fact, not pursue romance and instead opts to live on his own.
I find that to be a much more interesting direction to take either of their characters in than to simply mash together leftovers

It's good to know that there are more people who like rare pairs like me. Asuka x Hikari is so awesome, it would be cute to have them living a normal teenager/ young adult live together.
Shinji x Kensuke would be the purest form of entertainment, their dynamic is so funny! But I think their relationship wouldn't last too much, there could be a lot of fights since Kensuke was obsessed w/ being a EVA pilot and Shinji could be offended...

I really like shipping in media, but I don't really try to make everyone like the same things I like, I try to be always respectful, so... Here are my fav pairs!

Asuka x Mari!!! they are so cute on the rebuilds ♡, the way Mari calls Asuka "Hime" feels like a pet name (at least in portuguese)

Misato x Ritsuko. When I watched NGE for the first time, I thought they could have a really good and mature relationship, instead of the dishonest and "strange" relationships they had with men

Ritsuko x Maya: I really love their dynamic, Maya's cheerful and empathic personality would go nicely with Ritsuko's more realistic and blunt way

Kaworu x Shinji. Idk, I think this one is kind of controversial , but I enjoy it anyways. I like how they have this "destiny" thing, it's really nice to see how kindly Kaworu treats Shinji even though he's an angel.

Mari x Shinji. They looked so good together on the last evangelion rebuild, oh my god... It was so cute when Mari surprised Shinji after he saved the world!

Polyamorous Eva pilots (Shinji, Asuka, Kaworu, Mari) I like to think of it as an open relationship, where not exactly everyone of them is with everyone (Kaworu and Asuka are not dating in this case, they kind of remind me of Yuno gasai and Akise Aru from Mirai Nikki ) It would be REALLY entertaining LMAO , I can see Misato asking them something like "If someone wants to breakup you guys have a meeting and vote this person out?? How does this works?!?!"

It depends on the version of Evangelion honestly.
If it's Neon Genesis, I really like Asuka and Shinji, their toxic relationship and what EoE means for them. The hedgegog dilemma in full display and their arcs work very well when interwined. In secondary works like Girlfriend of Steel I tend to prefer Rei for some reason. In Rebuilds I like to think Mari and Shinji end up together and break away from the toxicity and harm that came before.
In all versions I love Misato and Kaji, I love that mature vibe. And just for shitposting I like imagining Kaworu and Rei hooking up in the Rebuilds, though it's not serious and it's just for laugh.

Yui isn't that much better than Gendo if I'm being honest. Especially in NTE.
In any case, they work really well together. Yui loves Gendo for who he is and is able to see a side of him that others aren't even aware of. She did know who he was and still decided to start a family with him. And their relationship is so important that it goes beyond "shippy territory". It's part of the story and I love their ending in Shin.

AsuShin. I love A/S, and I think it's probably what does end up happening post-EoE, but here's the thing: A/S has to be a slooooooow burn to be done well. They developed an understanding of one another in the instrumentality, but they still have a lot of issues to work out, and a lot of growing up to do. Not to mention, they need to survive until enough humans come back for society to start functioning again. I don't see them realistically getting together until they're in their late 20s to 30s.

I've thought about writing a fanfic where Shinji and Asuka go on to become very high-ranking people in the post-EoE UN, like a work-wife/husband kind of thing, but I'm too lazy

Shinji x Kaworu. Sure they don't get a lot of screentime and there's that unhealthy aspect of them putting each other on a pedestal, but overall I like that ship because it feels grounded in the two actually liking each other. Even the unhealthy aspects are pretty compelling, Kaworu wanting to help Shinji but not understanding how so he does what HE thinks is best, meanwhile Shinji only becomes attracted to Kaworu during moments where he's alienated by everyone else. What would a relationship be like if they were on an even keel? The manga sort of comes close to that, but Karl and Shaun are fairly different characters from the original anime. There's a potentially interesting avenue in seeing them grow as people during their relationship, good or bad.

I don't really *love* other ships, stuff like Touji x Hikari or Kaji x Misato are just sort of there for me even though there's nothing actually wrong with them.

One ship I actively don't like is Shinji and Asuka... how do I put this? Even if End of Eva didn't want to make me vomit with how awful Shinji treated Asuka throughout that (and I say that as someone who sees Shinji as his favorite character), I just don't buy that these two would work out in the long run. They have similar issues in common, but the ways they express that are diametric opposites and they constantly misunderstand each other in ways that are insurmountable without a lot of intervention. Shinji is closed off and doesn't get that people like him, Asuka herself demands attention but doesn't want to be vulnerable with anyone. Not a single Post-Third Impact fic with the two feel believable to me, and the fics I do like have to really reinvent the characters to make them work. I don't see any indication they'd actually change for each other, so at best I only really like the pairing as something that they grow beyond. I don't ever want to see them together in any medium, so I'm not that sorry Rebuild had Shinji end up with Mari even though I also don't like that pairing for my own reasons.

Side note, obviously I don't support pairings featuring adults with minors, but I feel like Shinji x Misato has some potential for deliciously evil, disturbing dark fic that I'm surprised no one's really done yet. Low sexual boundaries, grooming and major co-dependency, it'd be horribly wrong but it'd make for an interesting fucked up fanfic.

I agree, Misato is bad for Shinji. I have never understood why people like the idea, besides people with mommy fetishes.

Similar to AsuShin, Misato and Shinji have a lot of things in common (complicated feelings about their fathers, push others away to not get hurt, etc) but have different ways of coping with them. Misato takes in Shinji specifically because she sees a bit of herself in him. There is also the suggestion that Shinji is like her own father as well, given they share the same "they thought he was soft, but really he was weak" description and Misato's attraction to Kaji is based in part on him being like her father. Canonically, she had offered herself up to him in Ep 23 for pity sex and while Shinji said no to that, he has shown to have sexual feelings regarding her during the time he was inside of Unit 01 and a bit during Instrumentality. It'd be a horrifically unhealthy pairing, not the least of which being that she's his guardian and he's an actual child, but there's some basis in the show for them. It's why you don't see a lot of Kaji x Asuka for example, Asuka might be interested but Kaji clearly doesn't actually want it nor is there anything for them to bond over. There is nothing to that.
