Come, Sweet Death
Ok, I hate to say this but I personally think this song was better than Cruel Angel Thesis. No song has never made me so depressed before. But what is this song exactly about? I'm pretty sure that it's a song about Shinji's life but can anybody go deeper then this?
Re: Come, Sweet Death
It's about song about teen suicide done in an upbeat and happy way. What more is there to say?
I can post a link to a line by line breakdown of the lyrics if you want.

These days I can't listen to that damn song anymore, though I'm not quite sure if that's because it's such an insidious earworm or because it takes me to a dark place.

Re: Come, Sweet Death
I look at it as Shinji addressing the ones he loves, how he has lost everything and the decision he is about to make at that moment in the film. It's a summary of his guilt and pain and leads onto what he feels he has to do, which is basically take himself out of the equation. End everything so he won't have to feel that pain and guilt anymore and nor will the ones he loves either.

Why do you hate to say this, are you afraid of your own opinion? If so, why did you open a thread for something you hate to say? Is it some form of therapy? Im really intrigued.
Well, it can't be the melody, as it's pretty upbeat. The lyrics itself are pretty straight forward; somebody is sad because he/she couldn't reciprocate the feelings of love to the other. Of course, that's before fanwanking. I remember reading somewhere, that Anno wrote the lyrics in Japanese and somebody translated them, heavily altered.

I always thought it was a good song. It never made me depressed. If a song makes you depressed, then you have some serious issues.

The Japanese lyrics are a lot more on-the-nose, but the basic idea is still the same. Once upon a time I transcribed them on here from one of the OST companion booklets. Dunno if that ever got copied to the wiki or w/e.

Lmao as a kid I had that song on my playlist for the longest time, it was pretty good. I was an emo kid and I think part of why I liked it was because it was cathartic to my emo-ness at the time. Like it would make said sometime because it would make me self reflect. I don't think it's weird for a song to make a person feel stuff negative or positive.
I've never really spent much time thinking about how the song relates to the show which is weird now that I think about it. I've literally must've listened to it like hundreds of times over the years. I think I'll listen to it later and if anything comes to mind I'll spit ball my opinion if it's something someone else hasn't said. But generally the song always felt to me like it was about moving on and not getting stuck on the bad stuff of the past.
hmmm

I don't know, but I've always felt that the upbeat tone was almost insincere, like a depressed adult with tears crawling down the sides of his/her cheeks attempting to smile serenely. As if trying to hide the pain under a fake mask of happiness. That's how I've always felt about the song, though. Honestly, from what I've been reading on here, it seems that I'm the only one that feels this way about the song.

Re: Come, Sweet Death
Not sure how anyone could interpret the song's tone as anything but bitterly ironic

Ironic, could be; but first and foremost it feels cathartic. Very fitting for Third Impact, imo.

Re: Come, Sweet Death
I agree, it isn't weird. I think most people misuse the term "depressed." What they really mean is: this song made me have an emotional response while I was listening to it, and then I moved on with my life. But they say it made them depressed.

Re: Come, Sweet Death
The title is "Come, Sweet Death". There is pain, but death brings the promise of eternal relief. Some who are suffering might see that as a good thing.

Re: Come, Sweet Death
For those who don't know, the song's title is another Bach reference - the original "Come, Sweet Death" is a religious song about... well, see for yourself.

Re: Come, Sweet Death
Indeed, it was searching for a particular version of Bach's setting of the hymn and finding this song that first brought me to Evangelion, and thence to anime and manga in general.

All of my friends say that Cruel Angel Thesis is better. It's not that I don't like Cruel Angel Thesis. To me, Come, Sweet Death is more catchy and stuff:P

I like Komm, süßer Tod a lot, too. Actually I like it so much, I'm in the process of learning it to play with the piano... But as playing the piano is not one of my strengths, it's rather difficult. But I'll get there!
