Yeah. You read right. This is for everything that doesn't have anything to do with Eva.

I've recently gotten my first job and the experience has been mostly positive so far. This post is in the FML thread because of what I had to do before I got the job. I was following some digs a construction firm did to install some water tubes or something along those lines. My family doesn't have any experience with this sort of independent job. I had to get insurance and a bunch of papers I'd never heard of before and the experience was more tiring than the job itself, witch, due to not much of anything popping up, consisted mostly of me watching other people work. I'm just not used to the kind of bureaucracy these jobs require. Unfortunately, they are the more common work an archaeologist can find so I have to get used to them, has there will likely be times when I have no other job offers.

Thankfully, the pay is pretty decent.

Somehow managed to survive this long at my shitty overnight part-time stocking job, and for a while I was visibly improving my skills and physique and building a respectable reputation. But now it feels like I've reached the point where there is no possible future but to utterly flake out and go down in a flaming ball of depression and arthritis. I feel all the worse for being such a useless wuss while somehow so many others suck it up. I really have no inner resilience at all and I'm probably what people are referring to when they talk about lazy millennials.

I hate fucking everything.

Have you considered Central Asia? I was in Almaty (Kazakhstan) last year as a tourist and almost took a job with a dig for 4 months. I have an anthropology minor and some experience with dig sites as a photographer, but probably nothing approaching your credentials. Just the travel bug and an expensive camera kit with macro lenses. They're so desperate for crew they'll hire anyone out there. Plenty of French Unis who are digging up Greco-Baktrian ruins.

I've heard similar stories about archaeological sites in some eastern European countries. Going to a far off country and making some money is appealing, but right now the thing I need to do the most after I finish my thesis is getting more experience with Roman sites, since that's the area I'm going to focus on. That means the farthest I'd go would probably be Turkey. Unfortunately, most of these archaeological excavations off Europe are done by English, french and German universities, and sometimes some Americans and Canadians. Poor little Portugal never got much into the whole "digging up poor countries stuff" that was all the rage in the XIX and XX century and still continues to a degree today.

Still, the possibility is there, and I've heard the stories plenty of my professors have of doing similar things, but, if I'm looking at it right, it's stuff I'll only be able to even consider a few years down the line.

My mom lying and denying about everything that she does to bully me to my therapist. Also, my mom is triggered by the phrase calm down. She spazzes and screams about everything and it drives me up the wall. She says that she doesn't need any help and claims that she doesn't need to be back on meds. I honestly think that she needs help and needs to be back on meds but I have no clue how to help a stubborn person like her who refuses to admit that she needs help.

Ever since this morning, I have been suffering a lot of pain from a nagging cavity in my molar. The biggest problem with this is that I have to wait until January 7th to make a call for an appointment with a dentist since the 6th is Three Kings Day and they're not working that day.

So is this the virtual concept of people drinking sitting at the counter of a pub complaining about life?

Anyway, I can say that my life after 18 is just a painful cycle, uneventful, unimproved or how cliché it may seem, it's like seeing a social, financial or academic evolution of someone around you. Im been standing for half a decade, that's a little scary.

Sooooo...anyone else thinking 2020 is shaping up nicely to be the year of the apocalypse?

- Fiery disaster in Australia
- Climate crisis going out of hand
- Inept presidents and other governments actively trying to damage their own country out of greed
- Rise of the ultra-right
- ...and now the new plague from China.

And it's only halfway February.

All the things you wrote about happen nearly every year. I'd say there's no reason to be more negative about this year than any other that came before it.

nah.... bushfires dont do anything here. and we could just escape to antarctica if climate gets out of control. the new plague is just sars 2.0...apocalypse wont come until sun turns red giant but that is still billions of years awy and hopefully by tht time we would have converted the planet into a ship or something like the death star in star wars....not saying 2020 isnt possibly going to have some weird event or not...but jsut not the things you listed

yeah, I was always wondering if maybe Antarctica will be our haven when everything else turns uninhabitable.

Well, Sars 2.0 is shaping up to probably become a total disaster in my country because the authorities seem to think it is merely Flu 2.0, are not actually testing anyone, deny that tests are necessary, deny that it can spread very fast (I guess that's why it's showing up at the border a few days after the number of Italian cases skyrocketed a few 100 km away... ), are still giving out information that is two weeks out of date, contradict the WHO, etc.
Worse, the person who is supposed to lead the fallback government in case the normal one gets incapacitated got within touching distance of a now infected person in the Iranian government and instead of getting himself tested he thinks he's Superman and he can shrug off the disease. :crazytwirl: :headbash:

We are truly well and totally screwed.

Especially considering the number of dumb fucks who gobble up the government propaganda and also believe it's Flu 2.0. :irked:

Just wash your hands, and hope nobody sneezes you into the face - you're pretty young and, I assume, healthy, so you should be fine even if you end up catching the virus.
While I think it's good that caution is exercised, the hysteria is totally out of place. Year in, year out so many more people (in absolute numbers as well as in percentage of people affected) die of influenza and nobody cares - there's even people who question the fact that we have vaccines against influenza. But that's a whole other topic.

It just goes to show how the media machine and group think are dangerous things.

Actually, yesterday I realized I am more scared of the lack of government response (now they have some infectees they still go on saying "it's just a heavy flu" and give the most rosy outcome possible as the worst possible option :cringe: ) and especially my compatriots reaction to that. A lot of people's attitude towards the flu here is "Let's go to work and infect all my colleagues by not bothering to wash hands etc."

Although I did have a chuckle yesterday at the news reporters that started sounding quite distressed after days of basically claiming that anyone suggesting the disease was going to show up in my country was panicking and spreading FUD. Such irony.

Edit: Yesterday...was interesting. Very quiet in the supermarket (for a Saturday afternoon), quite quiet in the center of The Hague, and unfortunately an old guy who looked positively sick (feverishly sweaty and coughing the whole time - you know, coronavirus symptoms  ) on the bus back home. He had been shopping at a shopping mall with his wife, who also didn't seem very good. :cringe: They got out of the bus in one of the city's poorest neighbourhoods, so I'm sure that will work out fine  :irked: .
Anyway, now we're up to 7-8 cases, all people who recently went to Italy and their family. The bad bit: One of those is in the city where I work, and based on their age they could very well be a student. Dutch students are not known for their hygiene. The really bad bit: last week was a holiday, and many people went to Italy on holiday, skiing in the north. Incubation is 1-3 weeks, so expect an explosion of cases in the coming weeks. This could have been avoidable, if only out government would be taking a proactive stance instead of a reactive one  .

Today after dining at Denny's, I went to Walmart where not only was there nothing of huge interest but mainly the old people nearby were sneezing out of control. It doesn't help matters either that the store intentionally to save money doesn't use air conditioning. So it was a waste of time altogether and I could've gotten sick as well. Guess I have to stick to shopping through internet for now.

It is still not so bad compared to H1N1, the difference from 2009 to today, is that the Internet in general has intensified the sharing of false news and theories of disease spread.

By the way, my country has more than 200 suspected cases of coronavirus, 1 month ago and that number did not have 3 digits, a change of scenery so sudden causes unnecessary panic and makes people ignore the word "suspect".
