The difference will be very obvious. We'll all probably be fumbling around for a while.

That's a natural reaction to change, especially in this case since evageeks has been the same for so long. Once you get used to it you won't even remember what it looked like before.
Also, new banner spoiler.

phpBB v3 is the commonest forum software, and its current default layout is considerably different (avatars on the right of posts, for instance) from what we're used to. Of all available styles, that was the closest to EGF's present one, before I made changes to make it closer, only some of which have been done in that picture. In any case, the EGF layout as it stands is extremely "standard", I'd say, apart from the menu box in the banner, which will be replicated soon. I haven't decided whether any colour tweaking would be worth the effort, given that EGF currently is distinctly on the bland side.

At 79% horizontal if I remember correctly.
Looks very bland to say the least. I prefer the interface the way it is now. Unless, there's some way to edit that default interface to be more Evangelion. I hope so.

As I say, there is more to do (that screenshot isn't even from my current test system). But I'm puzzled at the idea that an interface which is almost identical but with stronger colours and more clearly delimited edges gets described as blander.

Heh! I find it fun, but it's also work to do (not quite the same as trouble), and I have a very full life. I've spent the past few days in Germany for the wedding of my son (to a Japanese woman), so I'm trying to fit this in around my fulltime job today. What you see tomorrow will definitely not be the final form!
But equally, when I made a new theme for another forum, and provided two alternatives (one aping the old theme very closely), I had vociferous complaints for about three days, but in the end only a single-figure number of people actually selected one of the provided alternatives.

I'll be the voice of dissent and say I like the new look well enough, as I'm used to it from elsewhere. Also, I like bland in my forum software, as I don't want it to get in the way of whatever I'm trying to do. There will be plenty of time to tinker with things, so as long as we have basic functionality in the near term I'll be quite content. Many thanks to Monk for the enormous amount of work he's put into making the upgrade happen, and to Paul for being master of themes!

I hate myself. But maybe I can learn to love myself. Maybe it's okay for me to be here! That's right! I'm me, nothing more, nothing less! I'm me. I want to be me! I want to be here! And it's okay for me to be here! -- Shinji Ikari, Neon Genesis Evangelion
Yes, I know. You thought it would be something about Asuka. You're such idiots.

I still haven't gotten used to the Gmail changes from November of 2011 that took away the real terminal theme (as well as making a bunch of other dumb changes with no long-term opt-out). Such is the way of web (and increasingly, mobile and desktop) software.
