I dont think he is dead, but on a different party at the time 3.0 it's happening. Killing him offscreen would be quite lazy IMO. If he and Misato had a kid/girl that would make things interesting and even would be a bone thrown to the fans in an interesting manner. Even the reaction of Shinji about it would be worth, however I am not gonna keep my hopes up because to me it seems that if you want or wish for something cool to Anno he just automatically assumes a contrary position just for the sake of doing it.
