I can't remember, but do they say what they even do in the anime/manga? If not, I was recently playing through GOS2 and noticed this snippet of info.

I can't remember either, but it's one of those sufficiently obvious things from what we see to infer that there are light-pipes down into the GeoFront. The phrase "light-pipe" hasn't been used before on the forums, so I suspect that this is the first time that this has been discussed (certainly the first time I've been in such a thread and said anything about the mechanism).

I thought there was some kind of mirror relay system built into the roof of the cavern to project light downwards.
If you push it too far, the construction of the Geofront makes no sense. There's now way you could build something with that internal volume with no supports, even a dome, and where are the launch tubes for the Evangelions? If they exit all over the city they should stick up through the Geofront all over the place.

There is also one in the geofront as well, right behind Nerv. I agree that they're probably solar panels.
Shin Evangelion brought me back, five long years later.

I noticed years ago that they were labeled "light condensing buildings" in the settei, and the rest fell into place readily.
Production drawings label that a "terminal", so it probably has something to do with the suspended train lines.

That always bothered me...
There were many inconsistencies across the structure of the Geofront...
-The light: far too much goes through the roof... How? If there are many holes or at least fiber grass tubing, then the roof should not be that strong, and the "special armor plates" must be perforated at some points...
-The city goes ALL the way through: the buildings pass across ALL the fortified armor plates and into the Geofront where thet end up hanging from the ceiling... Holes to pass a whole city through surely weaken the strcuture...
-The Eva launchers: thanks to Zeruel we see that from the main shaft (directly below the Nerv pyramid at the center of the Geofront) you can access the Main Control Room, which in turn is not far from the Eva cages... So the Evas launch from near the center of the Geofrom to directly above in the city without something to pull them up? Or are the Evas sent horizontally to the wall and then up around the curvature of the Geofront?
Just sayin'

It's really just a fps arena setup they don't have to think about. Eva spawns, pick up spawns (guns), starting weapons (a knife and some kind of shoulder needles), map markers for direction (the nerv pyramid), wrapped up in sea and mountains as borders. The cables make the navigation inefficient but the real game starts with the 5 minutes countdown like in any online round ever.
Actually a complaint on architecture you can make is that all of the buildings are too near to each other without a single thought to either human or eva space, nor things like the launch tubes or more map markers, with everything looking samey but yeah again it's not something they had to think about.
It really gets better in eoe and its combat when they drop the whole thing.

I always assumed they went to the wall and then up. We know those launch elevators make some crazy turns, so it all fits. It's dumb, but it fits.

Yes, I know. You thought it would be something about Asuka. You're such idiots.

Fun for the the whole cynical fandumb! BP
Ah, found it (finally):

Figured they were just for solar power until I saw this. In hindsight it explains how the viewer perceived "sunset" the first time we saw the Geofront in episode 1.
These videos, they're awkwardly translated, but frickin' hilarious.
