For my post-3I fic, go here.
The law doesn't protect people. People protect the law. -- Akane Tsunemori, Psycho-Pass
People's deaths are to be mourned. The ability to save people should be celebrated. Life itself should be exalted. -- Volken Macmani, Tatakau Shisho: The Book of Bantorra
I hate myself. But maybe I can learn to love myself. Maybe it's okay for me to be here! That's right! I'm me, nothing more, nothing less! I'm me. I want to be me! I want to be here! And it's okay for me to be here! -- Shinji Ikari, Neon Genesis Evangelion
Yes, I know. You thought it would be something about Asuka. You're such idiots.

This is easily the best work Anno and Higuchi have done since the 90's. Out of all of the giant monster films that have come out of Japan, this is easily in the top 5. It's a great tribute to the Golden Age films of the 50's-60's, yet it's far more relevant and refreshing that any of the other films that released in Japan's Heisei era.
Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
My favorite part of this movie is that it begins with people having a meeting to decide to have a meeting.

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
The Funimation Bluray cuts out the on screen text listing everyone's job titles, locations and weapons. The info is just listed at the top of the screen in plain subtitle text. Really miss the in your face Japanese text and it cuts the gag about the main characters progressively more outlandish job titles short. Kind of wished they had at least offered the option to keep it.
Plus the English dub is HILARIOUSLY AWFUL. Tested it for three minutes.
Also a bummer that the menus have those weird loud Clanks whenever you make a selection. Audio & picture quality is excellent. Maybe Sony can show Funimation how to do blurays right.

I expected as much. I'm only going to watch the dub for the part after Godzilla's atomic breath attack on Tokyo in the hopes that one of the voices we hear overlapping each other gives info about how many people were killed.
They'll probably digitally replace Godzilla with Zilla

+ to whoever said the special features would just be some Funimation interns prattling on you get a medal. Cause that's it.
And it's BRUTAL.
Tried to watch it. Got four minutes. Fast forwarded through and did not look like anything of worth is covered. Maybe someone braver/foolish will watch the 30 minute "special" feature.

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
I heard one of the IDW artist is on the special features. IDW makes godzilla comics. Some are pretty good. Kinda sucks that we didnt get bloopers with subs
Also apparently the song "Who will know" is suppose to be from Godzilla's point of view. Shin Godzilla is a very sad monster.

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
If Funimation knew what was good for them, they would have gotten film historian David Kalat to discuss the series in length. He's been on a few Classic Media Godzilla releases, as well as the Criterion Collection release of the original Godzilla film. He's a blast anytime he's given the opportunity to speak.
There were some issues with my shipment, so the Funi release is still waiting in the black abyss that is the postal service. Any day, though, and my Godzilla film collection should be complete.

Hey. Maybe I'm jumping out of nowhere with this. But as I recently finished Nier Automata, I wanted to share some tidbit since I don't find it mentioned here.
It seems that one unique enemy in the game, has been inspired by Shin Godzilla. It has dinosaur like shape and beam attack in unique color, looking very similiar to Shin Gojira's breath attack.

Just my useles contribution and so on...

It appears in one sidequest and after that, it's extremely rare spawn, so you may not see him unless you actively looking.

That's actually a pretty cool nod to Godzilla.
I just got the game myself, so I now know what to look for. XD

Anyone like the dub? Was kinda hard for me to understand them in the beginning because it was fast and the cuts in this movie are fast. Took me about half the movie get used to it but by the end movie slows down.
Also god dammit Funimation you slacked on the special features.
Also found myself playing a game with the dubbs. Like I kept trying to guess where I recognized the voices from. So many anime voices in this.

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
Bought the BluRay today which marks my first time seeing Shin Gojira in uncut form and not in it's watered down Resurgence version.
Every moment was like living right in the thick of it with the characters, I really felt a sense of awe from the detail Anno put into the writing. I would definitely with certainty say that this reboot knocks all previous Japanese sequels and American remakes combined out of the water if you'll forgive the pun.
Like I said before in my Resurgence review, the only character I can't seem to root for is Kayoko Anne Patterson because of her smugness that her face seems to imply nearly every scene she's in. And it certainly didn't bode well for me seeing USA painted as barbaric and trigger happy for it's method of wanting to nuke Godzilla without caring how many Japanese die in the process. Other than that, seeing the Japanese come through with their strategy reigning supreme in taking out the menace for now really expresses to a T the sense of community and togetherness that the Japanese spirit seems to embody when faced with a threat like this. I'm rambling on but you know what I mean, right?

I'm sorry to inform you, that this is the stereotype of how people perceive America(ns), coupled with morbid obesity.
I didn't buy the domestic version of Shin Godzilla because the cover looks like shit, and it only came in a standard edition. Being an old crazy Anno fanboy, I've imported the sublime Japanese version. It thrones in my Eva shelf, alongside his other LA movie compilation :3

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
I though they went kinda easy on america to be honest all things considered
Examples: They show americans feeling sympathy over Japan only having 2 weeks to evacuate. They didn't have to put that scene in there but they did.
They directly compare Rando(young main politician) to the American Japanese girl. They are two peas in a pod is how the movie presents the two. The American girl is like the Hero. And Americans directly help defeat Godzilla.
There's one scene, I think it's the same one where they compare the two I just mention, where they talk about how Americans value talent over age and how that philosophy has some admirable qaulities. Reason I mention this is because during the movie all the old leaders/people die and the younger generation of politicians and scientist and soldiers and etc take over and save Japan. Like the way I understood this is that maybe Anno thinks this is a good value and it's american.
Anyway yeah I thought the movie had a pretty positive interpretation of the american stereotype imo.
In general I think there this whole idea of "helping your fellow man" going through out the movie. Like the Germans where nice too when asked for help. German lady goes like have some faith in people.

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
What are you talking about? It was the UN that decided to nuke Godzilla, and they gave Japan two whole weeks to evacuate Tokyo. If they didn't care about Japanese casualties, they would have have just told the US to launch the nuke ASAP.
Besides, it's explocitly shown that the Japanese only managed to defeat Godzilla because of US aid - the drones make Godzilla use up his energy without wasting lives, and the USN uses cruise missiles to collapse buildings onto Godzilla. Patterson also makes mention of US Marines and Soldiers volunteering to take part in Yashiori.
America is portrayed in the film as overly-controlling yet helpful, secretive yet sympathetic. Pretty much sums up how the world sees their hegemon.

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
^America also mentions that they'd make the same hard decision to nuke New York City if Godzilla had been there instead. It's a tough call, but the US is very sympathetic to the situation.

On the issue of the on-screen text, Manga UK released this statement concerning the upcoming theatrical showing of Shin Godzilla in the UK:
Along with their plans to try and get a UK home video release into action afterwards, I'm pleased to see Manga UK trying to do a better job of things of FUNimation. Manga UK, if you're reading this, please, please get those special features in the home video release if that does become a thing!
Our upcoming SHIN GODZILLA theatrical release will include all original Japanese on-screen text (subtitled in English), and is not the localised FUNimation release.
