I wanted to make this topic for a long while and I figured now is the best time to do it!
So in honor of the final volume reaching the
Americas I ask you this:

Do you think any particular scene(s) were handled better in the manga than in the anime?
If so, what parts?

I genuinely love how good Evangelion hurts

It didn't drop the ball on Shinji/Rei until about the halfway point (as opposed to 1/4 the way in like the anime).

I really like the idea of depicting snow in Eva-Verse.

When it tried to be funny, it actually succeeded.

- Kaji's past and motivations for finding the truth, since it actually gave one to him unlike in the TV series.

- Toji's death, made worse by the fact that Shinji knew that he was the pilot of EVA-03 and even told him that the cockpit of an Eva is the safest place in the world to reassure him, that was a truly efficient gut punch.

- the MP-Evas, instead of attacking one by one and staying passive most of the time like in EoE, in the manga they attacked relentlessly and at once, really behaving like a pack of wild animals.

- Ritsuko managing to shoot Gendo on the throat as a last act of spite, fucking glorious.

- Yui's motivations better explained than in the anime.

Everything looks better and is better drawn than in the anime, whose quality varied with certain episodes.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

Agreed.

Also

- Sadamoto has excellent Comedic Timing
- I liked Asuka's Introduction in the Manga more than in the TV Show.
- More Misato Fanservice
-Sadamoto actually killed off Touji. Which really makes Shinji's descent into madness all the more believable.
- An ending that while flawed, isn't a complete grimdark despair fest like EOE.
- That really grim dream sequence where Shinji gouges Gendo with a progressive knife.

I haven't finished the manga yet, but I agree with this.

It is important to note that Anno would have done this as well, but was forbidden by one of the execs at the top.

Most of what's in this thread is great, but

I strongly disagree. Shinji's descent into complete despair doesn't make sense without the comasturbation. That's supposed to be the final nail in his (mental) coffin. Without it, Shinji's desire to become nothing is sudden and forced.
SPOILER: Show
And don't get me started on the universe reset.

I actually think, that letting Toji live as a cripple is even more mentally taxing. Knowing that you could possibly face the person you embarked such a cruel fate upon seems to be a pretty wretched situation to me.

Well, Sadamoto cleverly circumvented the issue by having Shinji not wishing to end the world in an apocalyptic nihilistic suicidal impulse, but simply asking GNR to "make the pain go away" for him (since he was impaled by three spears and feeling the pain that goes with it) and the others (those suffering and dying down there), GNR just took his request a little too literally.

C'mon, don't tell me you didn't see the blatant reactions of shock in Episode 08 when Kaji asked the same question! (And Shinji was oblivious to both the salacious question and to the horrified reactions around him)

That's a little unfair considering it took Sadamoto twenty years to finish his adaptation, I would be shocked if it came out looking like shit.

The reason that it's better drawn doesn't negate the fact that it is.

Plus a manga doesn't require quite as many drawings as an animation does.

Uh, things the manga does better... Well, I guess it wipes one's ass or lines the bottom of bird cages better than the TV series does. :guffaw:

If the title had instead asked simply for things I liked about the manga, I'd probably have an easier time answering. :p

Let me pull up the scene.

"Tell me something, is she still so wild in bed?"

See, now the joke's gone. The joke was in the subtlety. Wait, let me check the Platinum subs.

"So, does she still toss and turn in bed?"

Okay, that's much better.

This is the only item mentioned so far that I agree with. Rei's arc was rather badly truncated in the anime, and while claims that she just disappeared are overblown (she was always there, just not developing as a character, clip show notwithstanding) it was still an abrupt change of direction that could have been handled better.

Past that, meh.
