Hey guys i aplogise if someone else has already created a topic similar to this one (i tried searching the forum for one but couldnt find it anywhere) but i felt at least someone needed to create a topic about this. Recently i was searching the web for some news about Hideaki anno out of pure boredom and came across this interesting article saying that with miyazaki retired Hideaki is the new king of Anime. I found this article rather interesting and was wondering wether all you fellow evageek users agreed with the statement. I respect Anno completely and adore all his produced works but i wouldnt ever go as far as to say that hes the king of Anime. But who knows maybe i'm wrong, so please tell me all your opinons on this below. P.s Hideaki also discussed his opinions on a live-action Eva film in the article which makes for a interesting read.

Check if it's been linked in the TIFF thread, and just post it if it's new.

Well, since Anime is not a recognised state, I fail to see how it could have a king.

But if we insist on imposing political terms upon an industry, Anno strikes me more as a revolutionary due to his unorthodox way of using his position to go about business.
On another note, looking at the heavy vote with you wallet philosophy* that's going on in this industry, I'd say it would be more of a democracy anyways.

tl,dr: Miyazaki is sprouting nonsense.

Kinda feel titles like "The King of Anime" or "The Lord of Porn" or "The Commander of Cinema" can't just be given. It's kinda dumb.

Though I will say with Hayao Miyazaki retired & Satoshi Kon dead (I guess "The Dreaming Machine" will never be finished) Anno is the only director of worth I can think of in the medium right now.

Slowly been moving away from anime into primarily gaming so i cant comment on the state of anime much right now but "king of anime" is a dumb title.

Tatami Galaxy is my favorite from his other work: the repetitive narrative never feels gimmicky and the dialogue is bloody awesome. Not to mention how wildly imaginative and surprisingly hard-hitting the show is in general. Ping Pong is also rather unforgettable. It may be a straightforward adaptation of the original manga about edgy teenagers playing ping pong, but it is a lot of fun and has Yuasa's trademarks all over it.

Is Anno the king of anime? No. He's a fine director, though. As mentioned in the thread, being the king of anime isn't really a title that everybody's going to recognize. It's good enough just to be good at what you do, whether that be directing, VAing, or otherwise.

But Anno has done plenty of different things already.
I dunno, the Rebuilds are still Eva, but what matters to me is that they are good.

King of anime would imply he is better than anyone else in the industry. I never like putting one above everyone else whenthere are many talented people. He is among the best though.

Tall order seeing as how all Miyazaki does is adapt books as fairy tales as opposed to creating new work since after the 90's. But if your definition of "new" is "I didn't think if that before" (read: ignorance and lack of foresight) then sure. We'll wait for something "new".

I thought it was a great coming of age story with a sports anime setting.

On topic: There's also Mamoru Oshii, apparently he's been doing live action lately but he still has a respectable anime filmography.

If Anno is the king, then what is Mamoru Hosada?

Anno may be the new "king". That is the face of the industry abroad,. But Hosada is the best one suited to take the title of "The next Miyazaki".

I'm obviously talking about works past Eva.

Kiki and Howl are the only Miyazakis that fall into the category of adaptations, so no, that's not all he did. My definition of "new" is simply new in something other than Eva because it's been 16 years since Kare Kano.

As does Ponyo (The Little Mermaid) and Castle in the Sky (derivative of his own work with the Secret of Blue Water, which in turn was based on “20,00 Leagues Under the Sea”).

Even though Kare Kano is itself also an adaptation?

Ponyo is not an adaptation. It simply draws inspiration of Hans Christian Andersen's story. Same for Laputa and Gulliver's Travels.

Yes, I don't care if it's not original if that's what you mean.
