Incidentally I once had a dream about a monster with the back half of a crocodile, the front half of a hippo (with a lion's front legs) and the head of Jeremy Clarkson.

It was glorious.

Poor Shinji, but an excellent choice nonetheless.

I have to admit to the embarrassment of finding that I've reused a picture I've had before without realising. I find the least insulting way to refer to this is as a "senior moment". Still, now I've done it, I'll keep it for a while - but I may move on quicker than usual.

I have now made myself a reference list of all the avatars I've used here to prevent a recurrence (ha ha!). Now linked in my sig.

Once you find an avatar you really like, you tend to stick with it. It becomes a part of your identity on the forum almost. I'm starting to feel that way about my current avatar.

Quite true! I personally try to limit how many times I change my avatar to no more than once a month-- maybe twice if there's some groundbreaking event that occurs and makes me feel like my current avatar is inappropriate for the situation, or that I have an avatar that would just be more appropriate.

For example, I changed to my current avatar when a doujinshi that I was working on neared completion. My last avatar (the Shinji one that a lot of people are fond of) was one I had for around four and a half months when I was here really rarely and kind of just floating around.

...and for the record, avatars aren't the only thing I pull out when the mood strikes me.

Anywho, I used to change my avatars a few times within the same month, or at least once a month when I first joined EMF/EGF. I long since tried to stick with an avatar for half a year since changing it so often would bother me.

Still plan on using Misato (see avatar in my News/Front Page posts) whenever FINAL info's out.

I don't think you should be embarrassed about reusing an old avatar, and it can be pretty interesting to revisit an avatar that hasn't been used in years. The Gendo one I'm using now is the very first avatar I used on EGF, back in 2007, and I haven't used it since early 2008.

I realise it's not embarrassing in the sense that I shouldn't; but I intended not to and got it wrong is what I'm embarrassed by! It's a private embarrassment, not a public one, you might say.

Well, I always like all the avatars of Paul chooses to use. It makes mine feel more complete.

Also, they're always aesthetically awesomely pleasing.

I can agree with this. I used to change up my avatar somewhat frequently, but something about this one just stuck with me. Even whenever I tried other things, it wouldn't be too long before I came back to this one. For those who are wondering, it's Hei from Darker Than Black. He and I seemed to have resonated in certain respects.

I feel I've stuck with this avatar for too long. I might be someone from Kara no Kyoukai next.

OK, I don't want to stay with one I've used previously. And it's become apparent to me that I have been concentrating on Shinji's melancholy. But sometimes he's happy! Sometimes he's angry! Sometimes he's determined! Sometimes he's relaxed, playing the cello! I have possibilities for all of these, but I'll start with one chosen specially for Robersora:
